Schools closed

PACIFIC COUNTY – All schools in the Ocean Beach School District and Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will be closed for the winter break through Friday, Jan. 1.

Connection Group

Museum closed

Line dancing

LONG BEACH – Line dancing continues at the Long Beach Elks every Thursday. A special beginning class is now offered at 1 p.m. each Thursday. Then every Thursday evening (except the fourth Thursday) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., classes for beginners, intermediate and advance are available. Everyone is welcome. AA meeting

Holiday closures

PACIFIC COUNTY – All city, county, state and federal offices, all branches of the post office and all banks and credit unions will be closed on Friday, Dec. 25 for the holiday. Chinook Observer offices will be closed this day as well. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Saturday, Dec. 26Remember the Magic

OCEAN PARK – The third annual “Remember the Magic” holiday light show continues throughout the month at Bob and Mary Peterson’s Ocean Park home. From 5 p.m. to around 8 p.m., stop by to watch hundreds of Christmas lights twinkle as they are synchronized to classic holiday songs and some modern hits from Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The show may run longer on the nights closest to Christmas. Drive to 29011 H Street in Ocean Park (north of Joe Johns and south of 295th on the ocean side). Pull into the driveway and tune your car radio to 89.5 FM to enjoy music from the warmth of your car. This is a free event that collects donations for the South Pacific County Humane Society, “Remember the Magic” will have nightly shows through Dec. 26.

Cribbage

LONG BEACH – The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Tavern at the corner of Pacific Highway and Pioneer Road. The play will be according to ACC rules. Sunday, Dec. 27Bingo @ the Elks

LONG BEACH -Elks Bingo is held every Sunday. Come play bingo and have some fun. The normal game prizes and blackout jackpot of $250 are potential winners for you. All sessions begin at 1 p.m. and are open to the public. The doors open at 12:30 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 28Water Use Efficiency Plan

LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach is hosting a meeting on their Water Use Efficiency Plan and invite customers to provide input from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 28 at Long Beach City Hall, 115 Bolstad Avenue West. Tuesday, Dec. 29Old-Time Music

RAYMOND – On Dec. 29, all ages are invited to Raymond Timberland Library from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., for an old-time music show. Join in the merriment as Rick Meyers shows how the pioneers creatively used folk instruments and household items to make music. Instruments used in the show include the musical saw, spoons, mouth harp, limberjack, washboard and washtub as well as the banjo, guitar, autoharp and ukulele. For more information call 942-2408.

Spaghetti feed

ILWACO – On Tuesday, Dec. 29 the Ilwaco wrestling program will host a spaghetti feed from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the Christmas Basketball Tournament. For $5 you have the choice of red sauce, meat sauce, or white clam sauce and Caesar salad and garlic bread. All proceeds benefit the wrestling program. Chefs for the event are Jeff Marcus and Vinessa Mulinix.

Taekwon-do

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks, located at 110 N. Pacific Highway, is now offering Taekwon-do on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., to anyone interested in learning the Korean art of self-defense. Taught by master instructors, these classes are open to both beginning and advanced students and will increase strength and flexibility, as well as confidence in body and mind. Future EventsClamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Dec. 31 through Jan. 2, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Thursday, Dec. 31, 7:29 p.m. -1.4; Friday, Jan. 1, 8:13 p.m. -1.5; Saturday, Jan. 2, 8:56 p.m. -1.4. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Fireworks show

LONG BEACH – Go out with a bang this year! A free fireworks show sponsored by the city of Long Beach will take place at midnight on Dec. 31 at the Bolstad beach approach in Long Beach.

Introspective jazz

SEAVIEW – The public is invited to join internationally acclaimed introspective jazz guitarist John Stowell welcome the New Year with a performance in the living room of Seaview’s historic Sou’wester Lodge on Friday, Jan. 1 at noon. Admission is free. A donation to charity is appreciated, but not mandatory. Light refreshments are provided at no charge. Reservations are advised. Adult reading

PACIFIC COUNTY – Warm up to good books and join in Timberland Regional Library’s 13th annual Adult Winter Reading program, running from Saturday, Jan. 2 through Monday, March 15. The program offers the chance to win prizes just for reading and staying snug all winter. Pick up brochures with complete rules, entry forms and prize lists at Timberland libraries the last week of December. Basically, for each five books or audio books you finish during the program period, complete a form and turn it in at a Timberland library by Monday, March 15. Participants must be 18 or older and have a current Timberland library card. Prizes, including overnight resort getaways and book-and-beverage baskets, will be drawn on March 22. Local Timberland libraries will award additional prizes that have been donated by businesses and Friends of the Library groups.

AARP meeting

Hazard sirens testing

SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct monthly testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, Jan. 4, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15-second verbal message stating “This is a test of the Emergency Management Agency Tsunami Warning System. This is only a test.” The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. ENCORE lunch

ASTORIA – Stephanie’s Cabin in Astoria at 12 W. Marine Drive will host the ENCORE (Exploring New Concepts of Retirement Education) lunch bunch on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 12:30 p.m. Members are encouraged to wear their nametags and to bring guests and will be seated in the back room overlooking the Columbia River. An all-day breakfast menu is offered for seniors at $6, including a beverage. Apropos the new year, members reciting their New Year’s resolutions might qualify for a “Most Original Resolution” prize. Tryouts for “Mame!”

ILWACO – Peninsula Players is looking for 10 men, 10 women, two boys, and numerous chorus members and dancers for their next musical production, “Mame!” Tryouts will be held Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at the 2nd Story Playhouse located at 108 Spruce Street in Ilwaco. PENINSULA – Harbors Home Health and Hospice provides nail and foot care for disabled and senior persons, who are unable to complete their own nail care, by appointment. Appointments are made in Long Beach on Jan. 6 and in Ocean Park the second Wednesday every other month. There is a $25 fee. Medicare and most insurance do not cover nail care. ILWACO – Ilwaco Timberland Library is hosting “Structured Writing Workshop: Developing Your Stories and a Writing Practice,” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Jan. 20 for adults. Learn structured writing habits from local writer Becky Hart. Begin a writing practice, nurture a writing project, and revel in the company of other serious writers. The program will take place in the meeting room, as the library is closed on Wednesdays.
