PENINSULA – Once again the call goes out across the Peninsula to help with school supplies for low-income families in Pacific County. Donations of supplies and/or money would be greatly appreciated to give kids a chance to start school with the supplies they need to succeed. Classic Movies at Neptune

Connection Recover Support

FridayOnce Upon a Mattress

CHINOOK – A tomboy princess, a pea, 20 mattresses and an evil queen who refuses to find a bride for her princely son! Whatever you do, don’t miss “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy presented by the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists. “Once Upon a Mattress” at the Fort Columbia Theater runs through Sunday, Aug. 16. Fall Soccer registration

PENINSULA – The registration deadline for this fall’s youth soccer recreation league has been extended to July 31. Registration forms are available at All Season’s Kids Stuff in Chinook, Ilwaco Pharmacy and Rainbow Childcare in Ocean Park. Registration forms can also be printed at www.penpharmrx.com by clicking on the soccer ball. The fall season is for boys and girls who will be entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Kindergarten through third graders play soccer games during the week at the field behind the Chinook school. Fourth through eighth grades play their games on Saturdays at the Warrenton soccer complex. Teams will be formed in August and a coach will contact each child/parent to arrange practice schedules by the end of August. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital is hosting photographer Carly Henningan during July and August. The new county building on Sandridge Road is showing paintings in a variety of mediums by Carol Johnson, Judy Leonard, Wes Moehnke, Tom Morrow, Leonard Ellis and Jill Merrill in July and August. Come and see these works of art from members of the Peninsula Arts Association.

Vacation Bible School

SEAVIEW – Vacation Bible School will be held at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place in Seaview from 9 a.m. until noon, from Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31. Children four years old through sixth grade are welcome. A donation is asked of $5 per child or $12 for three or more in one family. Scholarships are available. The theme this year is “Crocodile Dock.” Fun with the Vacation Bible School Express is a truck ministry based in western Oregon. A 66-foot long, 16-foot wide trailer equipped with a rock wall, stage and sound system will lead the program. Pastor Bruce Meier will bring great fun and music. All are welcome. SaturdayCovered Bridge event

GRAYS RIVER – The Grays River Covered Bridge Celebration is Saturday, Aug. 1, with the walk/run at 9 a.m., awards at 10:30 a.m., and a parade starting at 11 a.m. The parade includes tractors, classic cars, horses and more! SummerFest fun

Concert at the Cabanas

SURFSIDE – Surfside Homeowners Association presents its second annual “Concert at the Cabanas” at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 1. The concert is free, open to all and will be at the Twin Lakes Cabana at 1712 324th Street in Surfside, near the compactor. Judy Eron on guitar and Charlie Watkins on accordion, will have you tapping your toes and laughing with their unique blend of folk/country music featuring Judy’s original songs. Swil Kanim is a world-class virtuoso violinist who advocates self-expression to create stronger community. Gene Tagaban is a noted Tlingit storyteller and actor who shares his wisdom and talent via dance, native flute and storytelling. LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife will be holding their annual Hunter Education Course from Aug. 3 through Aug. 8. Testing of AHAB Sirens

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, Aug. 3, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15-second verbal message stating, “This is a test of the Emergency Management Agency Tsunami Warning System. This is only a test.” There are currently 10 AHAB sirens installed in Pacific. Sirens are not designed to be heard indoors and the sound may also be impacted by adverse weather. Residents are encouraged to have alternate methods of warning such as NOAA weather radios, which are tested weekly and can be heard indoors. The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. PENINSULA – Art Bunch meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. It is open to anyone; with a $5 fee for attendance. Then the Firehouse Artists meet each Wednesday at the Ocean Park fire hall from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome and there is no fee to participate. These groups meet to paint, draw, create and critique in an atmosphere of camaraderie and support.

WASL Testing Info

PENINSULA – The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) will be administered in the Ocean Beach School District, on the following dates and times at the Hilltop Middle/High School:

Reading – Monday, Aug. 10 – Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Mathematics – Tuesday, Aug. 11 -Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Writing – Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13 – Students begin testing at 8:30 a.m. each day. If students are not finished by noon, they may return at 1 p.m. for transcription and editing of final draft. Students must have been in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade, during the spring of 2009, to be eligible to take or retake the WASL. The performance-based assessment, includes reading, writing and mathematics, is based on Washington’s essential academic learning requirements. Washington State law exempts private schools and home-based students from mandatory participation in the WASL, therefore, participation by private school and/or home-based students will be given via the local district as an ancillary service. Students requesting access to the WASL as an ancillary service from OBSD are expected to follow the same timeframe as enrolled students and take the test on site.

Army Chorus performs

ILWACO – There will be a free concert on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion/River City School Building in Ilwaco. Sponsored by the Don R. Grable Ilwaco Post 48 of the American Legion, the concert features the United States Army Europe and 7th Army Chorus, made up of both active and reserve soldiers who have served in Europe. Since 1995, past and present members have gathered for reunions and put on shows for veterans and others in communities in the United States. CAPE D – The Waikiki Beach Concert Series continues on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. in the amphitheater overlooking Waikiki Beach. Weavers Exhibit

SKAMOKAWA – The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild returns to Skamokawa’s Redmen Hall with a new exhibit of fiber works, with an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. The featured artist for this exhibit is Sisko Kallio of Astoria. Sisko first learned to weave as a child in Finland. She left there for Canada with her husband in 1951; 10 years later they settled in Astoria, where he was a millworker, and she did tailoring and alterations for the JC Penney store. A master weaver, she is now in her 90s. Guild members, when available, will demonstrate their skills on Saturdays until the exhibit closes in late September. The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild is a talented group of over 20 active members from Clatsop, Pacific and Wahkiakum counties, who work in a diverse array of fiber arts. They meet once a month on the third Tuesdays at 11 a.m., at the Columbia-Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Spinners also meet weekly at various locations. Cancer Golf Benefit

NASELLE – The public is encouraged to attend the Aug. 12 Naselle Water Board meeting at the Naselle Water Company in Appelo Plaza (suite 3) at 7 p.m. Scheduled meeting topics include signing paperwork for a $55,000 loan and a $158,000 grant for Lane Creek Bridge repair, as well as a $475,000 grant for sand filter replacement media and roughing filters to be placed at the main plant. Alzheimer’s support group

LONG BEACH – Caring for someone with memory loss? Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with dementia. Apply to attend Camp Victory

PENINSULA – Camp Victory, a program is for girls from Pacific and Gray’s Harbor counties who have been sexually abused, is accepting applications for the four-day recreational camp held in October each year. This camp free of charge, and girls are matched one-on-one with carefully screened, trained adult workers. Adults are needed to assist, are carefully screened and receive 30 to 40 hours of training prior to their actual camp experience on subjects such as sexual abuse and prevention, child development, communication skills and camp activities. In addition Camp Victory greatly benefits from the assistance of “Camp Angels” – men and women who provide help with setup, cleanup and meal preparation throughout the weekend, providing a much needed support team for the entire camp.
