The Artist’s Brush

OCEAN PARK and NASELLE – On July 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Ocean Park Library and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Naselle Timberland Library, all ages are invited to “The Artist’s Brush.” In Last Leaf Productions’ new play, an artist wishes he could paint everything “perfectly” – just as it really looks. He gets his wish but discovers that most people prefer to see the world as they wish it to be. Based on a Dutch folktale, this event is part of the Timberland Regional Library annual summer reading program, focusing this year on creativity and the arts. Anime, Manga & Kanji

RAYMOND – Raymond Timberland Library presents Anime, Manga and Kanji, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., July 15 for teens. Can’t get enough of Avatar and InuYasha? Visit the library after hours to watch anime, talk about manga and do Japanese calligraphy. Meet other anime fans and browse the library’s collection of manga and anime. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital is hosting photographer Carly Henningan during July and August. The new county building on Sandridge Road is showing paintings in a variety of mediums by Carol Johnson, Judy Leonard, Wes Moehnke, Tom Morrow, Leonard Ellis and Jill Merrill in July and August. Come and see these works of art from members of the Peninsula Arts Association.

MAMAS group

LONG BEACH – A group called “MAMAS” meets every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at 811 Pacific Hwy S, Suite 16. This is a support group for mothers and includes issues such as breastfeeding, parenting, birthing and nutrition and answer questions pregnant women or new mothers may have. SaturdaySandSations sand sculpture

LONG BEACH – The 25th Annual SandSations sand sculpture contest is July 17 and July 18 at the Bolstad beach approach. The weekend starts with sand sculpting lessons from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The main contest for novice, family, intermediate or masters skills is July 18. Check-in and plot assignments are from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Because of the tides, construction begins at noon and ends at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Also, don’t forget the sand flea pet parade at 2 p.m., and free hot dogs, while they last, provided by the Long Beach Kiwanis. Railroad Days

ILWACO – Celebrate all things trains during Clamshell Railroad Days, July 18 and July 19 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Doors open both days at 10 a.m. and the show runs until 4 p.m. There will be train layouts of all sizes, vendors and a kids craft caboose. Saturday there will be a live steam demonstration. Fall Soccer registration

PENINSULA – The registration deadline for this fall’s youth soccer recreation league has been extended to July 31. Registration forms are available at All Season’s Kids Stuff in Chinook, Ilwaco Pharmacy and Rainbow Childcare in Ocean Park. Registration forms can also be printed at www.penpharmrx.com by clicking on the soccer ball. The fall season is for boys and girls who will be entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Kindergarteners through third graders play soccer games during the week at the field behind the Chinook school. Fourth through eighth grades play their games on Saturdays at the Warrenton soccer complex. Teams will be formed in August and a coach will contact each child/parent to arrange practice schedules by the end of August. Once Upon a Mattress

CHINOOK – A tomboy princess, a pea, 20 mattresses and an evil queen who refuses to find a bride for her princely son! Whatever you do, don’t miss “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy presented by the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists. “Once Upon a Mattress” opens Friday, July 24 at the Fort Columbia Theater, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 16. RAYMOND – From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on July 25, adults are invited to Raymond Timberland Library for Mystery Night at the Library: What Happened to Sam Disney? Gotham City has a mysterious benefactor. Or they did? Now he’s gone missing and it’s up to you to find him. A donation of $10 per adult, $15 per couple includes the mystery performance, cake and ice cream and some interesting historical facts about the 80-year-old Raymond library at intermission. LB Rodeo

LONG BEACH – The 64th Annual Long Beach Rodeo and Family Night is coming July 25 and 26 to 6407 Sandridge Road. Start each day with a cowboy breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. The show starts at 1 p.m., with the finest bulls, cows and bucking horses coming from Gold Buckle Rodeo Company. Plus there will be a beer garden, sponsored by Budweiser, and various vendors on the boards. After the Saturday show, the family fun events start, with events including mutton busting, stick horse races and lots more. Presale tickets are available at the Ilwaco, Long Beach or Ocean Park Peninsula Pharmacy. Admission is $10 for adults and $9 for seniors. Vacation Bible School

SEAVIEW – Vacation Bible School will be held at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place in Seaview from 9 a.m. until noon, from Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31. Children four years old through sixth grade are welcome. A donation is asked of $5 per child or $12 for three or more in one family. Scholarships are available. The theme this year is “Crocodile Dock.” Fun with the Vacation Bible School Express is a truck ministry based in western Oregon. A 66-foot long, 16-foot wide trailer equipped with a rock wall, stage and sound system will lead the program. Pastor Bruce Meier will bring great fun and music. All are welcome. LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife will be holding their annual Hunter Education Course from Aug. 3 through Aug. 8. PENINSULA – The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) will be administered in the Ocean Beach School District, on the following dates and times at the Hilltop Middle/High School:

Reading – Monday, Aug. 10 – Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Mathematics – Tuesday, Aug. 11 – Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Writing – Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13 – Students begin testing at 8:30 a.m. each day. If students are not finished by noon, they may return at 1 p.m. for transcription and editing of final draft.

Students must have been in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade, during the spring of 2009, to be eligible to take or retake the WASL. The performance-based assessment includes reading, writing and mathematics and is based on Washington’s essential academic learning requirements. Washington state law exempts private schools and home-based students from mandatory participation in the WASL, therefore, participation by private school and/or home-based students will be given via the local district as an ancillary service. Students requesting access to the WASL as an ancillary service from OBSD are expected to follow the same timeframe as enrolled students and take the test on site.

Ocean Beach School District students, private school and/or home-based students wishing to take or retake the WASL should call Jona Korzinski at 642-1319, no later than Aug. 3.

Army Chorus performs

ILWACO – There will be a free concert on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion/River City School Building in Ilwaco. Sponsored by the Don R. Grable Ilwaco Post 48 of the American Legion, the concert features the United States Army Europe and 7th Army Chorus, made up of both active and reserve soldiers who have served in Europe. Since 1995, past and present members have gathered for reunions and put on shows for veterans and others in communities in the United States. Apply to attend Camp Victory

PENINSULA – Camp Victory, a program is for girls from Pacific and Gray’s Harbor counties who have been sexually abused, is accepting applications for the four-day recreational camp held in October each year. This camp free of charge, and girls are matched one-on-one with carefully screened, trained adult workers. Adults are needed to assist, are carefully screened and receive 30 to 40 hours of training prior to their actual camp experience on subjects such as sexual abuse and prevention, child development, communication skills and camp activities. In addition Camp Victory greatly benefits from the assistance of “Camp Angels” – men and women who provide help with setup, cleanup and meal preparation throughout the weekend, providing a much needed support team for the entire camp.
