“Laura,” a murder mystery
ILWACO – Laurie Carter is directing the Peninsula Players’ production of “Laura,” a murder mystery in three acts at the 2nd Story Playhouse, 108 Spruce Street in Ilwaco. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 p.m., on June 5 and 6 and June 12 and 13. Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. on June 7 and June 14. LONG BEACH – On Friday, June 5, there will be a dedication and open house for the Pacific County Administration Facility at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Lutheran Church is sponsoring a car show and shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 6 at 24002 “U” Street. Any year car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle or project vehicle is welcome. There will be door prizes, oldies music and games for all. There is no entry fee. SKAMOKAWA – Join your friends and neighbors for a night of traditional American folk music and dancing presented by Grays River and Skamokawa granges on Saturday, June 6 at the newly-refurbished Skamokawa Grange Hall, from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. This dance will feature Contra, traditional line dances with English origins that are a part of American rural life. Astorian Dave Ambrose will call and local musicians Andrew Emlen and Jeffrey Reynolds will provide the lively music. Learn the basics at 7:30 p.m.; the dance begins at 8 p.m. There will also be several waltzes. All dances are taught and easy to learn. SEAVIEW – Beginning at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 6 Erin Adair returns to the Sou’Wester Lodge for her 22nd annual performance. Music lovers will be delighted to welcome back Erin, whose flights of artistry with the classical flute first graced the lodge in 1987. Erin is a wonderfully talented performer who most recently has been performing as principal flutist with the Newport Symphony, the Linfield Chamber Orchestra, the Rose City Chamber Orchestra and the Woodwind Conspiracy. This year’s performance includes “Fantasia in E Major,” “Sonata in a Minor,” Danse De La Chevre,” “Gigue in E flat” and many others. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free. International Festival
LONGVIEW – The Ethnic Support Council of Lower Columbia College in Longview is hosting an international festival that offers a passport to the world. This 19th Annual International Festival is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 6 at the student center at the college and is free and open to the public. The festival celebrates the area’s growing diversity through multicultural entertainment, world market vendors, ethnic foods and various children’s activities offered by community groups. Attendees will be able to experience the cultures of Germany, Ghana, Hawaii, India, Mexico, Japan, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Scotland, Uganda, the United States, Vietnam and others through fashion, performances, food and merchandise. In addition there will be a ‘Human Race Machine’ which uses special technology to take a picture of a person’s face and morph it to show how it might look with characteristics of a different race, or how a person’s face might age or how a couples’ faces can be combined to imagine what their offspring might look like. Vietnam Sojourns
SKAMOKAWA – An exhibit of photos titled, ‘Vietnam Sojourns’ is now on display at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa on SR-4. The photographers traveled to Vietnam to participate in Project Uplift, a non-profit organization raising money to rebuild schools in Vietnam. Judy Vander Maten, Rob Kirschner, Chris Roalsvig and Paul Fardig traveled throughout the country for several weeks, meeting local residents, learning local customs and photographing images of their experiences. LONG BEACH – At 7 p.m., on June 8, Discovery Coast Audubon Society will host Bill Vogel from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) who will discuss involvement with forestry through habitat conservation plans and other tools and partnerships. He will describe the biological basis for recommendations USFWS often provides timber companies, as well as logistical and practical constraints. This will include a discussion about the importance of snags, how they develop, and how they can be retained or created and their use as habitat in settings outside the industrial forest, such as how hazard trees can be addressed in urban and rural settings. Plus he will talk about threats to forest-dwelling wildlife from human activities and structures outside the typical forested setting. All are invited to the P.U.D. auditorium on Sandridge Road. Young actors wanted
RAYMOND – The Willapa Players Summer Youth Theater will hold tryouts for their 2009 production on Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. This year’s Summer Youth Theater will be two one-act plays by local authors: “The Day It Rained Cakes” by Linda Martin of Raymond and “The Host” by Michael Haltom of Ilwaco. There are parts for 16 actors, both boys and girls. All actors must be eight years old (have finished third grade) to 16 years old. Rehearsals will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, starting Tuesday, June 17. Beach to Chowder Walk/Run
LONG BEACH – Join the 32nd annual 5K and 10K beach to chowder run/walk and the first year of a certified half-marathon on June 13. The half-marathon starts at 9 a.m., all other races start at 10 a.m. The course closes at noon. The event starts and ends at the arch on the Bolstad beach approach in Long Beach. Registrations will be taken from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Long Beach train depot at 3rd and Pacific North in downtown Long Beach. Flag disposal
ILWACO – At 2 p.m. on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14, at the Don R. Grable American Legion Post No. 48 in Ilwaco, American Legion members will perform the ceremony for the disposal of unserviceable flags. Members of the public who have worn and faded flags that should be retired with respect may bring their flags to the ceremony, take them to the museum in Ilwaco, to any fire hall or the Long Beach City Hall. Spaghetti dinner
LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks lodge is hosting a fundraising dinner for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Long Beach on Wednesday, June 17. The public is invited to enjoy a spaghetti dinner with salad and garlic bread for a suggested minimum donation of $5. Dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. by Relay For Life volunteers. AARP Driving class
KLIPSAN BEACH – There will be a driver-safety class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, sponsored by the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan. The mature driver class, held at 21063 Pacific Hwy in Klipsan Beach, consists of two four-hour sessions on two separate days and covers a wide range of driving situations. There are no tests.
