LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elks Lodge No. 1937 will host its 2nd annual Haunted House for the entire Peninsula community with the following schedule:

Oct. 28, 6 to 10 p.m.

Oct. 29, 6 to 10 p.m.

Oct. 30, 6 to 11 p.m.

Oct. 31. 6 to 11 p.m.; kids night, 5 to 7 p.m.

Donations will be accepted for local charities. Canned-food donations will go to a local food bank. Cash donations of $1 will go to the school scholarship fund.

ILWACO – Starting Oct. 29, the Department of Licensing office in Ilwaco will be closed on Thursdays. Regular business hours are now as follows: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.; and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Flu clinic for pregnant women

SOUTH BEND – The H1N1 vaccine will be given to pregnant women residing in North Pacific County on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The clinic will be held in the Pacific County Public Safety Building (behind the Courthouse) in South Bend. No appointment is necessary.

The vaccine being offered is thimerosal free and is therefore safe for pregnant women. There is no charge for the vaccine and again, this clinic is for pregnant women only. You may call 360-875-9343 if you need additional information.

A H1N1 clinic will also be offered in South Pacific County. For date and location information for that clinic please call 642-9349.

Connection Group

KLIPSAN – NAMI Connection Recover Support Group meets on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Golden Sands, 21608 “O” Place in Klipsan. Friday, Oct. 30ESA potato bake

NASELLE – The Naselle ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha) chapter is sponsoring a baked potato feed prior to the Naselle-South Bend high school football game on Oct. 30. The feed will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Comet cafeteria. A wide variety of toppings will be offered to satisfy your palate. Coffee and bottled water can be purchased also. Make this a family treat for the expected exciting game between these two teams. South Bend football enthusiasts are most welcome to come and enjoy this baked potato feed.

Eagles Benefit Dinner

OCEAN PARK – The Ocean Park Eagles Auxiliary is sponsoring a benefit dinner for Ocean Park Food Bank on Friday, Oct. 30. The night’s menu – created by Donna Simonson – includes breaded pork cutlets, ‘taters and gravy, veggie, salad and dessert. Dinner will be $7 and serving will begin at 5:30 p.m. Some fun things are planned so come on Eagle members, grab your friends and come on out for an evening of fun that will benefit our community.

ILWACO – There will be a Community Harvest Party on Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pacific Bible Church, Highway 101 across from Black Lake in Ilwaco. Body snatchers

LONGVIEW – “Body snatchers and body invaders: Diversity and behavior of predatory and parasitic wasps.” Willapa Hills Audubon Society invites the public to another free Halloween adventure into the fascinating world of insects. Lower Columbia College biology instructors Louis LaPierre and Carl Roush will show slides and discuss wasps on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., in the LCC Wollenberg Auditorium in the Rose Center for the Arts. You are also invited to indulge in a more up-close and personal investigation at one of two wasp identification labs, which will be held that afternoon from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the biology lab in Main No. 202. Living Well Workshop

ILWACO – Living well with chronic conditions is a workshop to help lighten your load through self-management. This is a free six-week workshop that runs once a week on Fridays through Nov. 6, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. If you have a chronic condition and you’d like to improve your healthful behaviors and health status this workshop can help. This workshop covers better breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, fatigue management, healthy eating, depression management, exercise, how to work with your health care provider and lots more. MAMAS group

LONG BEACH – A group called “MAMAS” meets every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at 811 Pacific Hwy S., Suite 16 in the midwifery office between THC Organic Market and LB Coffee Roasters. This is a support group for mothers on the Long Beach Peninsula and surrounding areas. Mothering issues include breastfeeding, parenting, birthing and nutrition and answer questions pregnant women or new mothers may have. CAPE D – U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment has been forced to cancel its Haunted Halloween Bunker because of safety concerns at the old World War II building. “I am sad to say that an event the community enjoys will not be taking place this year. The Coast Guard does not want anyone to get hurt,” said Station Commanding Officer Lt. Larry Ahlin.

Halloween Barn Dance

PUGET ISLAND – A Halloween Barn Dance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. It’s fun for all ages and will be alcohol-free. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by either a parent or guardian. There will be a live band, a bake sale, a costume contest, and prizes will be awarded. UNITED STATES – Nov. 1 is the date that Daylight Saving Time ends and you should turn your clocks back one hour to standard time. The official time change occurs at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. This is also a good time to check all the smoke detectors in your home and change the batteries.

Dine at the Source

ILWACO – In conjunction with the exhibition “Peninsula Eats: Dine at the Source,” Nanci Main and Jimella Lucas will be reminiscing with friends, former employees and fans in the Columbia Pacific Museum’s special exhibition gallery devoted to the history of their landmark restaurant from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1. Founded in 1950, the Ark Restaurant and Bakery was a classic Peninsula restaurant specializing in “beach fare” such as fried clams, chowder, and fish and chips. When Nanci and Jimella purchased it in 1981, it soon became a landmark for fresh local northwest cuisine. For the next 23 years, they established a legacy of fine dining for tourists and residents alike, becoming a destination for “foodies” from around the world. This installation includes artifacts borrowed from the owners and is sure to evoke fond memories for the many people who made the Ark their special occasion destination. Bingo giving

LONG BEACH – Be a part of Elks Bingo in the month of November to help our local community during the holiday and giving season. For each Sunday session in November, the Elks will donate $200 from bingo game proceeds to the following groups: the Boys and Girls Club (Nov. 1); food bank (Nov. 15); Camp Victory (Nov. 22); and Christmas Angels (Nov. 29).

Knappton open house

KNAPPTON – The Knappton Cove Heritage Center presents November on the North Shore Open House on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1 to 4 p.m. at the old U.S. Quarantine Station on State Route 401 three miles upriver from the north end of the Astoria-Megler Bridge. This fun afternoon at the Columbia River’s “Ellis Island” will include hot cider and history at the annual “O, How Horriable in the Day” observance of Lewis and Clark’s visit to the area in November 1805. Come to the 4-H Lock-In!

ASTORIA – Hey kids, do you like to play games, make crafts, meet new people and have fun? If so, come join the 4-H sponsored youth Lock-In on Nov. 7 at the OSU Seafood Consumer Center in Astoria. It is for any youth in grades 4 through 6 who wants to get away for the night and have some fun. It will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 and end at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday Nov. 8. Bob Milne to perform

LONG BEACH – The very talented pianist Bob Milne will perform at a special benefit for the World Kite Museum on Saturday, Nov. 7 beginning at 3 p.m. Milne plays and knows more about the piano and playing boogie woogie and ragtime music than most anyone you will hear. Tickets are $35 and are available at local branches of The Bank of the Pacific or at the World Kite Museum.

Symphonic Band

ASTORIA – The North Coast Symphonic Band will present the first concert of its 30th season on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., at the Clatsop College Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin, in Astoria. The NCSB consists of a dynamic group of professional, amateur and student musicians from the greater North Coast area including Oregon and Washington with guests from Portland metro area. Larry Johnson will return as conductor for the season’s first concert. Tickets for the afternoon concert cost $10 for regular admission and $6 for students with I.D. Children twelve and under are admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 1 p.m. Doors to the auditorium open at 1:15 and the Brass Gone Baroque will perform pre-concert music at 1:30. Coast raptors

LONG BEACH – All are invited to a presentation on Raptors of the Washington Coast. The meeting will be Nov. 9 starting at 7 p.m. at PUD on Sandridge. The presentation will be given by Dan Varland, Ph.D, of Coastal Raptors, a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. Many of the photos were taken by award winning Robert Palmer. Varland will also explain how local residents can help monitor coastal raptors by reporting observations. Colored leg bands on peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons and bald eagles and leg flags for merlins have been placed on raptors on beaches at Ocean Shores, Grayland and the Long Beach Peninsula. Please note band or leg flag code, color, date, time and location. Come one, come all, and see fantastic photos and learn just who our local raptors are. Discovery Coast Audubon Society of Pacific County will open the doors and wait for your arrival. This will be the club’s last general meeting until February or March 2010.

Parenting Workshop

LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elementary is hosting an interactive parenting workshop entitled, “Guiding Good Choices” on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning Nov. 10 and running through Dec. 8. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Guiding Good Choices will give families the skills to work together and take action to help prevent children from destructive decisions and other problem behaviors. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines, skills to strengthen their relationship with their child and how to help the child develop healthy behaviors. Gifts That Make a Difference

CLATSOP – Gifts That Make a Difference will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, and all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties are invited to register to be part of this event. This is an alternative gifts fair where holiday shoppers donate to participating non-profits in the names of people on their gift lists. This year, for the first time, donations may be made in volunteer hours, as well as cash contributions. Non-profits may also sell items related to their work, like tickets, scholarships and fundraising items. Registration is $20 through Dec. 12. Legion Auxiliary Bazaar

ILWACO – The Don R. Grable American Legion Auxiliary will be holding its bazaar on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at the American Legion Hall in Ilwaco. Nemah chili feed

NEMAH – The Nemah Community League will hold its elk season chili feed on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nemah Community Center. The event is held to raise funds for the continuing renovations of the church/community center. The night’s menu will include chili, spaghetti, oysters, garlic bread, rolls, and a variety of salads and pies. Admission is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children (children five and under eat free), or by donation.

AARP Driving class

KLIPSAN BEACH – The driver-safety class scheduled for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at the Peninsula Senior Center has been cancelled due to the instructor being seriously ill. The class will be rescheduled at a later date.

OCEAN PARK – Two-year-olds and their accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver are invited to attend Toddler Story Time at the Ocean Park Library on Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 from 2 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. Each program includes simple stories, rhymes, songs and movement games that children and adults can enjoy together.

NASELLE – The Finnish-American Choir, under the direction of Cliff Weimer, will be performing with the Northcoast Chorale at the Christmas Concert at the Deep River Historical Lutheran Church, Sunday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. Rehearsals will be held at the Naselle Lutheran Church, Saturday, Nov. 21, 28 and Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. Choir members are encouraged to attend at least one of these rehearsals, preferably all three.
