PENINSULA – Once again the call goes out across the Peninsula to help with school supplies for low-income families in Pacific County. Donations of supplies and/or money would be greatly appreciated to give kids a chance to start school with the supplies they need to succeed. CHINOOK – Whatever you do, don’t miss “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy presented by the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists. “Once Upon a Mattress” is performed at the Fort Columbia Theater with performances through Sunday, Aug. 16. Curtain times are Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. This hilarious Broadway musical is a comedic look at the fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” Professional musicians play the delightful score as the wonderfully whimsical story unfolds on stage. Army Chorus performs

ILWACO – There will be a free concert on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion/River City School Building in Ilwaco. Sponsored by the Don R. Grable Ilwaco Post 48 of the American Legion, the concert features the United States Army Europe and 7th Army Chorus, made up of both active and reserve soldiers who have served in Europe. “Southern Skies”

CAPE D – The Waikiki Beach Concert Series continues on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. in the amphitheater overlooking Waikiki Beach. Bring your sunglasses, blanket and more and relax while enjoying some great music. The next concert features Southern Skies, who are described as playing “Americana, country and folk-rock.” Joey Capoccia and Kendl Winter team up to create Southern Skies, an acoustic duet featuring original and traditional music reminiscent of their home towns in the Ozarks and Appalachian mountains. Weavers Exhibit

SKAMOKAWA – The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild returns to Skamokawa’s Redmen Hall with a new exhibit of fiber works, with an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. The featured artist for this exhibit is Sisko Kallio of Astoria. Sisko first learned to weave as a child in Finland. She left there for Canada with her husband in 1951; 10 years later they settled in Astoria, where he was a millworker, and she did tailoring and alterations for the JC Penney store. A master weaver, she is now in her 90s. Guild members, when available, will demonstrate their skills on Saturdays until the exhibit closes in late September. The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild is a talented group of over 20 active members from Clatsop, Pacific and Wahkiakum counties, who work in a diverse array of fiber arts. They meet once a month on the third Tuesdays at 11 a.m., at the Columbia-Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Spinners also meet weekly at various locations. Sunday, Aug. 9Cancer Golf Benefit

KLIPSAN – A new non-denominational worship group meets on Sundays at 9:30 a.m., at the Peninsula Senior Center in Klipsan. These meetings are open to all and will be led by Rev. Mary Evelyn Long. Offerings received will be donated to a different “cause” each month.

Vesper services

OYSTERVILLE – On Aug. 9 Vesper Services will be held in the historic Oysterville Church starting at 3 p.m. Pastor Mindy Burns of Destiny Friends Church will lead the services and music will be provided by soprano Brier Gregory accompanied by Barbara Poulshock. WASL Testing Info

PENINSULA – The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) will be administered in the Ocean Beach School District, on the following dates and times at the Hilltop Middle/High School: Reading – Monday, Aug. 10 – Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Mathematics – Tuesday, Aug. 11 – Part one at 8:30 a.m. and part two at 1 p.m.; Writing – Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13 – Students begin testing at 8:30 a.m. each day. If students are not finished by noon, they may return at 1 p.m. for transcription and editing of final draft. Students must have been in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade, during the spring of 2009, to be eligible to take or retake the WASL. The performance-based assessment includes reading, writing and mathematics, and is based on Washington’s essential academic learning requirements. Washington state law exempts private schools and home-based students from mandatory participation in the WASL, therefore, participation by private school and/or home-based students will be given via the local district as an ancillary service. Students requesting access to the WASL as an ancillary service from OBSD are expected to follow the same timeframe as enrolled students and take the test on site. For information call 642-1319.

PENINSULA – Art Bunch meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. It is open to anyone; with a $5 fee for attendance. Then the Firehouse Artists meet each Wednesday at the Ocean Park fire hall from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome and there is no fee to participate. These groups meet to paint, draw, create and critique in an atmosphere of camaraderie and support.

Republican Party Picnic

SEAVIEW – On Aug. 15, local Republicans welcome Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna who will speak on “The Origins of the Mortgage and Real Estate Crisis – How Misguided Federal Policies Landed Us in This Mess.” Also joining the event are special guests and the two announced Republicans running for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District. David Castillo, of Olympia, and Jon Russell, of Washougal, will also be speaking about their campaigns. Apply to attend Camp Victory

PENINSULA – Camp Victory, a program is for girls from Pacific and Gray’s Harbor counties who have been sexually abused, is accepting applications for the four-day recreational camp held in October each year. This camp free of charge, and girls are matched one-on-one with carefully screened, trained adult workers. Adults are needed to assist, are carefully screened and receive 30 to 40 hours of training prior to their actual camp experience on subjects such as sexual abuse and prevention, child development, communication skills and camp activities. In addition Camp Victory greatly benefits from the assistance of “Camp Angels” – men and women who provide help with setup, cleanup and meal preparation throughout the weekend, providing a much needed support team for the entire camp.
