ASTORIA – The Clatsop County Women’s Resource Center (WRC), in conjunction with Clatsop Community College, will hold its annual fundraiser – the Community Soup Bowl – on Thursday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the “Red Building,” located at 20 Basin Street in front of the Cannery Pier Hotel. Those attending can buy a one-of-a-kind, kiln or wood-fired bowl of their choice commemorating this event to take home. Tickets are $30 for soup and a bowl and may be purchased in advance at Lucy’s Books, the Déjà Vu Thrift Shop, the Cannon Beach and Seaside Chambers of Commerce and the WRC office. Friday, May 1Amnesty from traffic fines
PACIFIC COUNTY – South District Court for Pacific County is offering a “collection amnesty program” throughout the month of May. Designed to help those with outstanding traffic tickets and fines, the court and their collection agency have agreed to waive interest and a 40 percent of collection costs. For those paying by credit card an additional $25 will be added to the balance owed. The court is offering the 30-day program from May 1 through May 31. Blessing of the fleet
ILWACO – Immediately after the kid’s parade head to the Ilwaco boat basin at the Port of Ilwaco for the blessing of the fleet. Boats leave the dock at 1 p.m. and the memorial service includes a free scenic boat ride. This event is sponsored by the Ilwaco Charter Association.
Container Planting
SURFSIDE – Pam Stephens and Debbie Haugston, of the Peninsula Green Fingers Garden Club, will be presenting a container garden planting demonstration at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the Surfside business office grounds, located at 31402 “H” Street in Ocean Park. They will be planting three containers, each in a different style. There will also be a planter available for raffle at $1 per ticket, seven tickets for $5. All plants will be sustainable in our coastal area and are reported to be deer resistant. Brochures and handouts will be available to aid attendees’ efforts. LONG BEACH – On Sunday, May 3, kids can enjoy a ride on a fire truck from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the new Ilwaco fire hall. The main events of the day start at noon in downtown Long Beach with guest speaker Jim Getty, aka Abraham Lincoln, and master of ceremonies Jim Sayce. ASTORIA – The North Coast Symphonic Band is performing a concert at the Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria at 2 p.m. on May 3. Monday, May 4Hazard sirens testing
SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, May 4, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15- second verbal message stating “This is a test of the Emergency Management Agency Tsunami Warning System. This is only a test.” The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. LONG BEACH – The SandSations Committee is on the hunt for SandSations T-shirts from the past 25 years. Do you have any SandSations shirts that are still in good condition and you’re willing to part with? LONG BEACH – The Pacific County Health Department will hold an emergency preparedness tabletop exercise on May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The focus of this exercise will be: request, receiving, storage, security, distribution and prioritized usage of strategic national stockpile (SNS) supplied antivirals. They will discuss how to determine who will get the medications and in what order of priority they will get them; where the medications will be stored; and who and where will they be distributed. There will also be a review and exercise of the hospital’s pandemic influenza plans. This exercise will take place at the new south Pacific County Administrative Building meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Light refreshments will be provided. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital is hosting a six-week workshop series on ‘Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions’ on Fridays, May 8 through June 12 in the hospital conference rooms. The weekly sessions will run from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend this course that is ideal for people with heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other chronic illnesses. AARP Driving class
KLIPSAN BEACH – There will be a driver-safety class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. The mature driver class consists of two four-hour sessions on two separate days and covers a wide range of driving situations. There are no tests. LONG BEACH – The Culpepper Merriwether Circus is coming on May 25. Hosted by the Lions Club, the circus will be set up just south of the Bolstad approach in a lot on the dunes. NW Garlic Festival
OCEAN PARK – The 28th Annual Northwest Garlic Festival sponsored by the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is coming June 20 and 21. On Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. come and listen to the Beaver Boogie Group, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Fabulous Farelanes are back! On Sunday, June 21, the Beaver Boogie Group returns to entertain from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and then beginning 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the Southern Breakdown Band will be on board. Even though there will be picnic tables available it is a good idea to bring your chairs and blankets to sit a spell and listen to the music after you have visited the vendors. This year the event will be held on Wilson Field, also known as the Beach Barons Rod Run Field. This will allow off-street parking and more space for the vendors and entertainment. Besides the garlic crafts and food, there will also be local artists, crafters and entrepreneurs at our event. The entertainment this year again is top notch!
