Patriotic Day
OCEAN PARK- On Nov. 10 the Associated Student Body of Ocean Park Elementary is sponsoring a Patriotic Dress Up Day, with students and staff encouraged to dress appropriately. At 2 p.m., they will hold an assembly celebrating veterans. The Coast Guard Color Guard is scheduled to be on hand to post and retire the colors and they will be giving tours of one of their 25-foot rescue boats beginning at 11 a.m. All local veterans are welcome and encouraged to attend these events.

Friday, Nov. 12″Ocian In View” events
ILWACO – The annual “Ocian in View” events marking the anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s first sighting of the Pacific Ocean will be held Nov. 12 through Nov. 14. Robin Cody, author of the new book “Another Way the River Has,” will speak at 6 p.m., Nov. 12 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. This book is a non-fiction account of Cody’s 82-day canoe trip down the Columbia River. Admission is $5 and includes access to the Smithsonian exhibition “Journey Stories.” A bus tour of historic sites leaves from the museum at 9 a.m. on Nov. 13. Artisan show
TOKELAND – Grayland Children’s Hospital Guild is hosting their annual artisan show at the Tokeland Hotel. The theme of the three-day event is “Jingle Bells, the Sound of Healthy Children.” It is set for noon to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14. Saturday, Nov. 13School clean up
ILWACO – The old high school building needs some tender loving care before the winter sports seasons begin. Jeannie Weyl has received the go-ahead from Ocean Beach School Board to do just that on Saturday, Nov. 13 beginning at 9 a.m. Rain or shine, volunteers are asked to come to the old high school and give the school and surrounding area a deep cleaning. Coaches, athletes and concerned families and individuals have agreed to help with the project. Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, rakes, wheel barrow, and other tools to help fix up the grounds, as well as scrub brushes, cleaning supplies, and items to clean the windows, etc. Donations of cash or landscaping and cleaning supplies are also encouraged. KNAPPTON – The Knappton Cove Heritage Center is holding their annual open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 13. Admission is free to come view the improved museum exhibits, interact with Pacific Northwest Living Historian interpreters, and enjoy hot cider and the history of this great facility. Concert/Fisher Poet
SKAMOKAWA – Alexa Wiley, regional singer and songwriter, and Dave Densmore, well-known fisher poet, will perform at Redmen Hall/River Life Interpretive Center to raise funds for Friends of Skamokawa. Their performance, “For Love of Fish,” will be on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The concert is offered in conjunction with a photography exhibit by David Myers, formerly of Eden Valley, and Judy Vandermaten of Cathlamet. Both photographers will speak about their exhibit at the concert and the audience will have the opportunity to view their photographs following the concert and visit with the artists. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $5 for those 12 and under. CAPE D – On Sunday, Nov. 14, singer Carl Allen will present “Woody Guthrie sings Journey Songs: Immigrants, Hobos and Orphans” beginning at 3 p.m. at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco. Admission to the park for adults is $5 and includes the concert. The musical performance is designed to compliment a Smithsonian exhibit at Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, which shows how our evolving mobility changed a young nation and how transportation made us grow. This month’s guest speaker is botanist Kathleen Sayce, who will talk about our native orchids. She has identified 13 species in eight genera, all of which are terrestrial, and she will discuss their habits and habitats, and when and where to see them flowering in our area. Some are suitable for gardens and available from native plant propagators. Future EventsTsunami evacuation findings
SEAVIEW – The public is invited to join the University of Washington Hazards Mitigation Institute along with state, local, and tribal emergency management agencies for an open house event to present final project information regarding tsunami vertical evacuation opportunities on the Peninsula. The meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center meeting room in Seaview. Results from the previous Long Beach, Ocean Park and Ilwaco-Seaview meetings held in February and June will be presented. This meeting will be an opportunity for all attendees to participate in an interactive environment and learn about tsunami vertical evacuation. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Girls’ basketball clinics
ILWACO – High school senior Kenzi Wirkkala is holding youth basketball clinics for girls in the third through sixth grade in the Carl Aase Gym over three Saturdays, beginning on Nov. 20. The clinic will cost $35 payable to Ilwaco High School and includes receipt of a reversible camp jersey and three two-hour sessions. The first session is from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 with registration beginning at 3 p.m. The second clinic will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 and the final clinic will be on Saturday, Dec. 11 with the time to be announced. It is not mandatory to attend all three sessions. Lady Fishermen varsity basketball coach Ned Bittner and his staff of Cari Wirkkala Herbertson, Rob Snow and Krystina Frazier will be the clinicians. Cold Weather Survival
FORT CLATSOP -Lewis and Clark National Historical Park Fort Clatsop is pleased to announce the next “In Their Footsteps” free speaker series event. Frank Heyl will be sharing ‘Cold Weather Survival; a Way of Life’ on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. Heyl, who has written several books on the subject, was the cold weather survival consultant for the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, and served as the principal instructor for military and private survival schools for 23 years. Heyl’s presentation includes his own true stories of northwest survival including search and rescue situations. Audience members will receive a practical booklet about surviving cold weather emergency situations. These free programs are held in the Netul River Room at the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center. Community Thanksgiving
LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks at 110 Pacific Highway in Long Beach is hosting a free community dinner on Thanksgiving. The meal includes turkey and all the trimmings and will be served from noon to 5 p.m. Dinner will be served by Elks members and volunteers. Call 642-2651 if you have questions.

ILWACO – The 5th Annual Community Day of Thanks is set for Nov. 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Inn at Harbour Village, 120 Williams Avenue N.E., in Ilwaco. There is no charge for this complete Thanksgiving dinner and all are welcome. This dinner is made possible through generous donations and volunteers. Community tree lighting
OCEAN PARK – You better watch out, Santa Claus is coming to Ocean Park on Nov. 26. At 6:30 p.m., the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the official lighting of the community tree at the Eagles on Bay Avenue. Students from Ocean Park Elementary will sing Christmas carols. Then Santa arrives at the Ocean Park fire station on Ridge Avenue at 7 p.m. Come visit with Santa, enjoy some hot chocolate, hot cider, cookies and other goodies, and don’t forget to bring your camera for a photo with Santa.
Studio tour
PENINSULA – Peninsula Arts Association is hosting their annual Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 26 and Nov. 27. There are more than 20 locations on the tour route, with many giving demonstrations, and all offering unique gifts and amazing artwork. Pick up a free map at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce, M&D Designs, Don Nisbett Gallery or Bay Avenue Gallery. Redmen Hall anniversary
SKAMOKAWA – The public is invited to Redmen Hall for the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Friends of Skamokawa’s annual holiday open house and bazaar. Redmen Hall is located at 1394 West State Route 4 in Skamokawa and will be open Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. During December, the hall will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The last day to shop is Sunday, Dec. 19. Opening day, Friday, Nov. 26 includes a performance by Sunrise Fletcher from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday, Rick Nelson will perform from 10 a.m. to noon, along with Donna Gatens-Klint signing “The Magic of the Backwoods Kitchen” from 1 p.m. to 3p.m. Then on Sunday, Nov. 28, Bob Pyle will return to sign his newest book, “Mariposa” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Holidays at the Beach
LONG BEACH – Join the Long Beach Merchant Association and the city of Long Beach in welcoming the holidays with a variety of community activities. On Friday, Nov. 26, all ages are invited to the Neptune Theatre for a free showing of “The Polar Express.” On Saturday, Santa Claus comes to town and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand for a various activities designed for young and old alike. Feed the Hungry
LONG BEACH – The 10th Annual Holiday Bazaar to help feed the hungry is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 at the Edgewater Inn on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. The money raised will be donated to Peninsula FISH Emergency Services in Ilwaco. Celebration of Lights auction
ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital Foundation’s Celebration of Lights, the annual live and silent auction that benefits patients and programs at Ocean Beach Hospital, will be Friday, Dec. 3 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., the live auction starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but the foundation requests guests bring a canned food item that will be donated to area food banks. Spiced cider, wine, hors d’oeuvres and festive live music from local musician Greg Parke will be part of this year’s holiday event. Auction items include original works and limited editions from local artists, a variety of gift certificates from merchants and restaurants, jewelry, custom quilts, home and garden items, gift baskets and decorated Christmas trees and wreaths.
