ILWACO – On July 14 the Peninsula Players continues auditions for a One Act Festival at the 2nd Story Playhouse in Ilwaco. Auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. for children and at 7 p.m. for adults. Dive into a Book

OCEAN PARK and NASELLE – On July 14 from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Naselle Timberland Library all ages are invited to ‘Slip, Slide or Dive into a Book.’ Join in the magic of a Charles the Clown original story, ‘Circus Island,’ about a boat constructed entirely of balloons. Shoalwater Birders

OCEAN PARK – The Shoalwater Birders’ quarterly meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Ocean Park library at 1308 256th Street. The speaker is biologist Teresa DeLorenzo, a founding member of the Northwest Ecological Research Institute, who has been an independent wildlife research consultant in the Pacific Northwest since 1983 with emphasis on turtles, amphibians, secondary-cavity nesting birds, and bears. She has served as editor of the International Bear News and conducted behavioral research at the Oregon Zoo. Her accomplishments include the establishment of a turtle rehabilitation facility in Portland and the direction of wetland restoration efforts in Clatsop County. She is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for Oregon and is producer of the natural history program, North Coast Nature, on Coast Community Radio. Everyone is welcome.

SandSations

LONG BEACH -The 2010 SandSations sand castle competition is coming July 14 through July 17. A new event this year is the master’s demonstration starting Wednesday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Solo sand artists and a master team will build a Christmas sculpture. This process continues from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Thursday, July 15 and Friday, July 16. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can have your picture taken with the display. The Sand Flea Pet Parade is at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday. Also construction for the main competition is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday – look for the designated family area. Judging of winners for each category (masters, intermediate, novice and family) is based on design, creativity, intricacy, suitability to sand, overall appearance, effort and teamwork. ASTORIA – Join guest trainer Frann Grossman as she prepares volunteer literacy tutors to help under-prepared adults improve their literacy skills from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 15 in the Library Conference Room at Clatsop Community College. Frann worked as a journalist and was public relations director for a hospital for many years before deciding to go for her MA TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Portland State University. ASTORIA – The Lower Columbia Classic Car Club extends an invitation to all who are interested in collector cars to attend the next meeting set for July 15 at Steve Jordan’s shop building, located at 35232 Helligso Lane in rural Astoria. Saturday, July 17Domestic Violence Fundraiser

LONG BEACH – The Domestic Violence Awareness Project is co-hosting a fundraising lunch/dinner with the Long Beach Grange at the grange on Saturday, July 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. A portion of the proceeds are going towards the cost of putting on this memorial 5K Run/Walk which is set for Saturday, Aug. 7 near the Bolstad beach approach.

Bald Eagle & Boat Festival

CATHLAMET – The 29th Annual Bald Eagle Day is Saturday, July 17 with a parade, which starts at 11 a.m. The theme this year is ‘Power of Community: Saluting Heroes and Volunteers.’ Scott Johnson from Naselle, a member of the Washington State Patrol, will be grand marshal. The street festival features many vendors, food, several bands, a kid’s area, the fire department water fight and a dunk tank. Then later that day there will be a beer garden at the Elochoman Marina, with musical entertainment and a fantastic fireworks show. Sunday’s Wooden Boat Festival begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. This day’s events include a barbeque, farmers market, Coast Guard rescue demonstration, free game for kids and lots more. Clamshell Railroad Days

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco, in partnership with the Peninsula Model Railroad Club, is hosting the annual Clamshell Railroad Days on July 17 and July 18. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, free for children under 12. This year’s event features several new attractions. In addition to the old favorite model train there will be model train layouts from four regional model railroad clubs, 23 tables of vendors and the Kid’s Craft Caboose. Historical interpreter Bob Duke will present as “Conductor Bob of the I.R.&N.” at 1 p.m., both days. A free lecture The Clamshell Railroad from Ilwaco to Nahcotta Then and Now will be presented on Saturday at 11 a.m. Sunday’s free lecture at 11:30 a.m., will cover The Clamshell Railroad from Ilwaco to Megler Then and Now. There will be a guided bus tour from Ilwaco to Nahcotta on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m., a guided bus tour from Ilwaco to Megler ($5 or $7.50 for both days). SummerFest events

LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. Music by the Naselle Marimba Band can be enjoyed at Lewis and Clark square in downtown Long Beach from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Come downtown and have some fun.

Sunday, July 18Vesper services

OYSTERVILLE – Vesper Services is set for 3 p.m., July 18 in the wonderful Oysterville Church. Pastor Chris Ode from Chinook Lutheran Church will officiate. Music will be provided by the Bayside Singers, with soloist Annika Wolters, under the direction of Sandra Nielson. Nielson will also be the organist for this service. This is a warm, wonderful, welcoming, casual, come as you are event and everyone is welcome.

Exhibit continued

SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall extended of their current exhibit – Columbia River Reflection by painter Rachael Wolford. She has a striking collection of oil paintings she has done showing the length of the Columbia River with a narrative of the geography and history of the river following the paintings. The exhibit will be extended to July 18. This has been a popular exhibit so it is extended for another week of exposure. Redmen Hall is located in beautiful downtown Skamokawa in an historical schoolhouse building, with a permanent exhibit about the local history of the lower Columbia River Basin, a beautiful gift shop, and a well-rounded bookstore. Summer Art Camp

ASTORIA – The 4-H Club is offering a summer art camp from July 19 through July 23 at the 4-H clubhouse by the Clatsop County fairgrounds. This camp is open to all youth, not just 4-H members. Morning classes are for youth seven to 12 years olds, and afternoon classes are for those over 13. Activities include: drawing and painting, three dimensional art, stamp art, creating a personal flag, and more! The cost of the camp is $60 for the first child, $30 for a sibling, $45 for foster children, and drop-in for a day at a time will be $15 a day. Registration is due by July 12 or until filled. Wednesday, July 21Sustainable salmon meeting

ABERDEEN – A regional meeting of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership (WCSSP) is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Wednesday, July 21 at the Port of Grays Harbor, 111 S. Wooding in Aberdeen. WCSSP is the newest of seven regional salmon recovery organizations in Washington, covering all river basins between Cape Flattery and Cape Disappointment that flow directly into the Pacific Ocean. The goals of WCSSP include facilitating a holistic view of the coast region; developing a regional plan to increase and coordinate salmon recovery and protection; supporting the functions of the four lead entity groups through which projects are developed, reviewed and funded; advocating for regional policies and partnerships; and seeking funding from additional sources. ILWACO – On July 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the public is encouraged to attend a Diabetes Support Group at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, in the second floor conference room. Future EventsMulvey @ the Museum

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is organizing an exhibition of original paintings by Charles Mulvey, a talented watercolorist and beloved local figure on the Peninsula whose work gained wide respect throughout the Northwest. The museum is working with the Mulvey estate and local private collectors to mount a retrospective view of his work. If you have an original watercolor and would like to loan it to the exhibition, to be on view from Aug. 6 through Oct. 10, please bring it to the museum on Thursday, July 22 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Collections Manager Barbara Minard and Director Betsy Millard will be available to look at works and gather information. The exhibition opening will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Candidates/issues forum

LONG BEACH – An issues forum, sponsored by AAUW, will be held on Friday, July 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Super 8 Motel in Long Beach. This forum will be an opportunity to hear from your candidates for local office. The format will include a question and answer period. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is a non-political organization dedicated to education. This is a non-partisan event. Natalie Hanson will be the moderator for the program. FinnFest

NASELLE – The bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival is coming to Naselle July 23 through July 25 on the grounds of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School. The festival opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, with various cultural programs including an amazing documentary on the history of Estonia. On Saturday there is the Paavo Nurmi Run at 8 a.m., then the official opening ceremonies and a variety of musical presentations, performers and dancers throughout the day. Plus you don’t want to miss the maypole dancers, the wife carry and the boot toss event, and all of the various booths with a wide variety of Finnish items. Summer Art Festival

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association’s Summer Art Festival is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., July 23; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 24 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 25 at the Edgewater Inn (located on the Sid Snyder beach approach) in Long Beach. Always a favorite with locals and visitors, 18 PAA artists fill the space with handmade, artist inspired wares. Pottery, glass, jewelry, paintings, art cards and photography are just some of the mediums represented. Also available for sale are limited edition prints of this year’s Garlic Festival Poster, ‘Sea Going Garlic,’ by Carol Olson as well as raffle tickets to win an Eric Wiegardt original painting! Chronic disease mgmt

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held July 23 and July 30, and Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. LONG BEACH – The 65th annual NPRA Long Beach Rodeo is coming July 24 and July 25 at the rodeo grounds on Sandridge Road. ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, will be the site of a monthly Authors’ Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for July 28. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Jake’s Birthday

LONG BEACH – The 4th Annual Jake the Alligator Man’s 75th Birthday Party weekend kicks off on July 30 with a bachelor party for Jake at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. The party includes a burlesque show with the Emerald Dollies from Seattle and the Rose City Shimmy from Portland. On July 31, there will be a car show in downtown Long Beach, with live rockabilly music by the bands Drag Strip Riot, East Side Speed Machine and Angie and the Car Wrecks. LONG BEACH – The 20-year reunion for the class of 1990 at Ilwaco High School is July 30, July 31and Aug. 1 at the Chautauqua Lodge. Hunter Education Program

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department, along with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, is conducting its annual basic hunter education program from Aug. 2 through Aug. 7. Class size is limited to 30 students and you must register before the class to attend. To register, contact Chief Flint R. Wright at 642-2911. The class is paid for by hunters and sportsmen from all across the state of Washington, so there is no charge for students to attend.

Agricultural Incentives

SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is Aug. 13. The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices. Interested producers are encouraged to contact the local office at 1216 Robert Bush Drive (Pacific County Annex Building) or check the website at www.wa.nrcs.usda.gov for more information.
