“Hello Dolly”
CHINOOK – The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) is pleased to announce that they will be performing the musical comedy “Hello, Dolly!” at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, May 7, May 14, May 21 and May 28; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, May 15, May 22 and May 29 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, May 16, May 23 and May 30. The performances will be held in the refurbished auditorium at Fort Columbia, which sits over the tunnel between Chinook and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Tickets will be on sale at Okie’s Thriftway and Stormin’ Norman’s. Cost of the tickets is $15. This play was a great success on Broadway. It starred Carol Channing, and won 10 Tony Awards. In 2002 the “Hello, Dolly!” original cast recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was made into a movie in 1969 – it follows the adventures of Dolly, America’s most beloved matchmaker. PAPA invites all in the community to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a play with a cast of 30 local talented residents.

LONGVIEW – Willapa Hills Audubon and LCC Biological Society invite the public to hear world-renowned scientist George Divoky’s presentation “Falling Off the Edge: Four Decades of Environmental Change at the Top of the World” on May 7, starting at 7 p.m. at the Lower Columbia College Rose Center Wollenberg Auditorium. Divoky has spent the last 34 years above the Arctic Circle on Cooper Island, studying the behavior and arctic world of the black guillemot, a small seabird, and has witnessed habitat change over three decades of research. Divoky will share photos and exciting tales of polar bears and sadder tales of the changes affecting his beloved black guillemots. The program is free and open to the public. PENINSULA – Coast Community Radio presents its second annual garden party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, May 8 at the Nahcotta Rhododendron Garden at 28409 Sandridge Road. Admission is free. Visitors touring the garden’s eight acres will see a wide array of natives and ornamentals including rhododendron varieties found nowhere else in the region. Host Herb Mindt together with co-host and licensed landscape architect Bill Jablonsky will be joined by master gardener Ann Goldeen, of Coast Community Radio’s program, “Diggin’ the Dirt.” Willapa Bay oysters donated by Northern Oyster Company will be available fresh from the grill, along with a variety of other foods. ASTORIA – Larry Johnson will conduct the North Coast Symphonic Band at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 9 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria. The program will feature music honoring mothers on their special day and mothers in the audience will receive a free carnation as they arrive at the concert venue. Performers include Bob Walters of Ocean Park, who will sing “Embraceable You.” The pre-concert entertainment will start at 3:30 p.m. and feature the All That Jazz band, which includes Bob Joiner and Glen Hansen on trombone, Nick Johnson on sax, Dennis Hale on tuba, Chris Jacobson on guitar, Lee Stromquist on keyboard, and Dave Graves on percussion. SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall is showing a Smithsonian Museum exhibit titled “American Folklife – Commonwealth of Cultures.” This exhibit will be illustrated with examples of folklife from our local area and will feature local folk art, crafts and food. Monday, May 10Surf rescue drill
LONG BEACH – The annual surf rescue practice drill will be held on Monday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at the Bolstad approach in Long Beach. The public is invited to view the drill from the boardwalk in Long Beach. Come and see your local heroes in action – the Coast Guard, the Ilwaco and Long Beach fire departments, Pacific County Fire District No. 1, Long Beach Police Department, Pacific County Sheriff’s Department, Ocean Beach Hospital, Medix Ambulance and the all-volunteer South Pacific County Technical Rescue Team (surf and cliff rescue). PACIFIC COUNTY – All Timberland libraries will be closed Monday, May 10 and Tuesday, May 11 for the installation of a new library system upgrade. Libraries will have regular open hours on Wednesday, May 12 and people will be able to check out books and other items, but staff will not be able to check in any items. Walk for Wellness
LONG BEACH – Beginning at noon on May 15 at the Bolstad approach there will be a walk sponsored by NAMI Pacific County (National Alliance on Mental Illness). To volunteer or for donation information call Kat at 665-6305.
White Tail Run
SKAMOKAWA – The 26th Annual Great White Tail Run starts at 10 a.m. on May 15 on the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa. Participants can run or walk a 10k, 5k or 2-mile course. Registration and packet pickup begins at 8:30 a.m., race day, at Skamokawa Vista Park. Day of registration fees are $12 without a shirt and $25 with a shirt. This event is a fundraiser for the Wahkiakum County-based 4-H program and all proceeds will benefit the county program. Call 465-2275 or 795-3278 for more information.
Forestry fun day
ELMA – From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on May 15 a Forestry Fun Day is set at the Satsop Development Park, 100 Technology Lane in Elma. Lunch will be provided. Find out what assistance programs might be available for small forest landowners as well as information on a variety of topics related to forest health, wildlife and tree vigor. The event will focus on hands-on teaching and is open to all ages, as activities for youth will be ongoing throughout the day. Youth under age 14 need to be accompanied by an adult. Advanced registration, received by April 30 is $10 per person or $15 per family. Registration at a later date will be $15 per person and $20 per family. Surf Perch derby
LONG BEACH – The 10th Annual Surf Perch Derby is Saturday, May 15. The registration booth is open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $25 per person or $30 on the day of the tournament. Prizes are offered for the total weight of fish caught for individual and three-person teams. The fee includes a breakfast with all-you-can-eat pancakes, from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Kiwanis breakfast, which is served at the Bolstad beach approach at the north end of the boardwalk, is open to the public and includes pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, cranberry juice, coffee and milk. Columbia River Reflections
SKAMOKAWA – Columbia River Reflections, an exhibition portraying the Columbia River from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, opens May 15 at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. It includes works created for the show by Rachael Wolford, a local artist well-known for her use of watercolors and ink. There is an artist’s reception from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., that day. The exhibit runs through July 11. Redmen Hall, which is open Thursdays through Fridays from noon to 4 p.m., is located on SR-4 in Skamokawa. Call 795-3007 for more information.
Fashion fun
ROSBURG – “Fashion and Fun” is the theme for this year’s Grays River Friendship Circle’s annual Spring Tea and Luncheon to be held at noon on Sunday, May 16 at the Rosburg Community Hall. This is an occasion to wear that long or short dress you’ve only worn once; or maybe a special hat; or to wear whatever is comfortable. There will be a short fashion show featuring a variety of styles for special occasions, some of them from the very distant past. Some will be on display as well. Lunch will consist of tea sandwiches, savories and desserts, and will be served at 12:30 p.m., followed by the program. Everyone is welcome. There is a suggested donation at the door is $8, and tickets for the Pick Your Own Prize Raffle will be $1. Proceeds from this event will be used toward development of a Community Prayer and Healing Garden at Grays River United Methodist Church.
