CHINOOK – The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) is pleased to announce that they will be performing the musical comedy “Hello, Dolly!” at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, May 14, May 21 and May 28; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, May 22 and May 29 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, May 23 and May 30. The performances will be held in the refurbished auditorium at Fort Columbia, which sits over the tunnel between Chinook and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Tickets will be on sale at Okie’s Thriftway and Stormin’ Norman’s. Cost of the tickets is $15. New special ticket price for students is only $5!
This play was a great success on Broadway. It starred Carol Channing, and won 10 Tony Awards. In 2002 the “Hello, Dolly!” original cast recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was made into a movie in 1969 – it follows the adventures of Dolly, America’s most beloved matchmaker. PAPA invites all in the community to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a play with a cast of 30 local talented residents.

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held May 14 and May 28, June 4, 18, 25, and July 2 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. White Tail Run
SKAMOKAWA – The 26th Annual Great White Tail Run starts at 10 a.m. on May 15 on the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa. Participants can run or walk a 10k, 5k or 2-mile course. Registration and packet pickup begins at 8:30 a.m., race day, at Skamokawa Vista Park. Day of registration fee is $12 without a shirt or $25 with a shirt. ELMA – From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on May 15 a Forestry Fun Day is set at the Satsop Development Park, 100 Technology Lane in Elma. Lunch will be provided. Find out what assistance programs might be available for small forest landowners as well as information on a variety of topics related to forest health, wildlife and tree vigor. Clamming
PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Saturday, May 15, 9:23 a.m. -1.1; Sunday, May 16, 10:06 a.m. -1.2. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.
Surf Perch derby
LONG BEACH – The 10th Annual Surf Perch Derby is Saturday, May 15. The registration booth is open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $25 per person or $30 on the day of the tournament. Prizes are offered for the total weight of fish caught for individual and three-person teams. The fee includes a breakfast with all-you-can-eat pancakes, from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Kiwanis breakfast, which is served at the Bolstad beach approach at the north end of the boardwalk, is open to the public and includes pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, cranberry juice, coffee and milk. Columbia River Reflections
SKAMOKAWA – Columbia River Reflections, an exhibition portraying the Columbia River from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, opens May 15 at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. It includes works created for the show by Rachael Wolford, a local artist well-known for her use of watercolors and ink. There is an artist’s reception from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., that day. The exhibit runs through July 11. Redmen Hall, which is open Thursdays through Fridays from noon to 4 p.m., is located on SR-4 in Skamokawa. Call 795-3007 for more information.
Bingo!
LONG BEACH – The Elks has bingo every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. The 15-game program includes a Texas blackout and a progressive $250 blackout. Snacks and pull-tabs are available. The public is welcome. Elks bingo proceeds fund the Washington State Tall Elks Therapy program.

ROSBURG – “Fashion and Fun” is the theme for this year’s Grays River Friendship Circle’s annual Spring Tea and Luncheon to be held at noon on Sunday, May 16 at the Rosburg Community Hall. This is an occasion to wear that long or short dress you’ve only worn once; or maybe a special hat; or to wear whatever is comfortable. There will be a short fashion show featuring a variety of styles for special occasions, some of them from the very distant past. Some will be on display as well. Lunch will consist of tea sandwiches, savories and desserts, and will be served at 12:30 p.m., followed by the program. Everyone is welcome. There is a suggested donation at the door is $8, and tickets for the Pick Your Own Prize Raffle will be $1. The mummy of King Tut is on the loose and wants his liver back. After business tycoon Mortimer Tutley purchases an urn containing King Tut’s liver, he receives a threatening note from King Tut demanding the liver back. ASTORIA – From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., on Sunday, May 23, the public is invited to the Columbia River Maritime Museum to hear composer, photographer and multi-instrumentalist John Mock perform ‘From the Shoreline.’ Mock is known to capture his love of the coast and the sea in his music and storytelling. “Goonies” abound
ASTORIA – June 4 through June 7, the city of Astoria is hosting a series of events in honor of the 25th anniversary of the filming of ‘The Goonies.” Several original cast members will be in attendance including Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Joe Pantoliano and Curt Hanson. On Friday, June 4, stars will meet fans and sign autographs. After the dinner there will be a screening of “The Goonies” along with a documentary about the film. On Saturday and Sunday, in addition to regular showings of the film, enjoy bus tours of original filming sites including an interior tour of the house. Derby & barbecue
SKAMOKAWA – On June 5 at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds, the public is encouraged to come to the Dollars for Scholars fundraising day. There will be a fishing derby with weigh-in from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. A salmon and chicken barbecue will be served from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the barbecue is just $8 for adults and $5 for youth 10 years old and younger. There will also be an auction and raffle starting at 4:30 p.m. And don’t miss the Rods & Reels Car Show. LONG BEACH – The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Peninsula Bunco Club and the Chautauqua Lodge are hosting the Second Annual Bunco for Breast Cancer at 6 p.m., on Saturday, June 12 at the Chautauqua Lodge. Donations for game prizes, a silent auction and raffle drawings are welcome. Come and enjoy playing Bunco to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s efforts to provide free mammograms, other cancer screening, and breast cancer research.
