ILWACO – The American Legion’s 23rd Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. People who protect our safety on the Columbia Coast and Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at the ceremony. Dinner will be provided, and a number of people who protect our safety on the Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at ceremonies after dinner. ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program (CCAP) is giving away personal hygiene packs to low income families/individuals. Those qualified may pick up one pack every six months at the CCAP office in Ilwaco Community Building, top floor, at 152 1st N in Ilwaco. LONG BEACH – Line dancing on the Peninsula has moved to Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. To celebrate the new location there will a kick-off potluck on Thursday, Oct. 14 beginning at 4 p.m. Beginner and intermediate classes are offered at 5:30 p.m., each Thursday. ILWACO – Two actors, Bill Hamm and Melissa McCloud, face off in a clever and challenging thriller written by Richard Stockwell and directed by Laurie Carter. Cancer support group

ASTORIA – Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinic’s Cancer Support Group meets Friday, Oct. 22 in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospital’s oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospital’s chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Art Around Town

PENINSULA – Peninsula Arts Association has numerous pieces of artwork by members on display during October. Marilyn Casey’s coastal paintings are being shown at the Ocean Beach Hospital. Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek are showing their varied paintings at the Pacific County building on Sandridge. Elizabeth Bonn-Zimmerman is showing her paintings at the Ilwaco library. PAA hopes that you will take time to admire this artwork.

Saturday, Oct. 23Red Ribbon week

PACIFIC COUNTY – Oct. 23 through Oct. 31 is Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention campaign that takes a stand to commit to drug prevention and education and to living drug-free lives. Rescue Swimmer stories

ASTORIA – On Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2:30 p.m., all with an interest are invited to the Columbia River Maritime Museum for another in the Graveyard of the Pacific series, with rescue swimmer O’Brien Starr-Hollow presenting a short history of Coast Guard aviation and stories of a rescue swimmer. Small Woodland Mgmt

SOUTH BEND – On Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Kirk Hanson from the Northwest Natural Resource Group will lead a group of speakers in this daylong workshop titled Innovative Small Woodland Management. The workshop will be held at Willapa Harbor Community Center, 916 West First Street in South Bend, and will introduce small woodland landowners to a range of forest management strategies and resources that can help maintain healthy and productive forests. Pumpkin patch/harvest festival

LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach is hosting their first great pumpkin patch and harvest festival from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 in the Funland field behind the Long Beach Police station. The festival includes a costume contest, pumpkin patch for kids 12 years old and younger, hot apple cider, trick or treating at participating Long Beach merchants, walking the plank with the Beards Hollow Pirates and much more. Oktoberfest Chinook Style

CHINOOK – Get your ticket now for the 6th Annual Oktoberfest Chinook Style fundraiser dinner and auction in the beautiful newly remodeled Chinook School gymnasium on Oct. 23. Model Railroad Club

Drill Conductor course

ASTORIA – Attention all commercial fishermen – there will be two classes offered to meet the new regulation for a drill conductor to be on each boat. This two-day marine safety and survival training course enables attendees to meet that requirement. Pre-registration is required, but the course is free. It will be offered from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 at Clatsop Community College’s MERTS building in Astoria. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Nov. 5 and Nov. 6, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Nov. 5, 7:47 p.m. -1.3 and Saturday, Nov. 6, 8:34 p.m. -1.5. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Auction Gala

ILWACO – On Nov. 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco will host an auction of more than 50 artworks to benefit the museum’s exhibition programs. A diverse group of regional artists have created 6×6-inch masterpieces, which will be on display in the museum lobby from Oct. 23 until the Auction Gala on Nov. 6. 4-H Lock-In

WARRENTON – Hey Kids … do you like to play games, make crafts and swim? If so, come join the 4-H sponsored youth Lock-In on Nov. 6 at the KOA in Warrenton. This event is for any youth in grades fourth through sixth who wants to have some fun. The event runs from 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6 until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7.
