ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program is now distributing basic school supplies to all students in grades one through 12 through the Student Needs Assistance Program. OCEAN PARK – The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Sept. 3 through Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and $.50 for regular-size paper. On Sunday, Sept 5, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., bring your standard-size paper grocery bag and for $3 you can fill it with books of your choice. Stock up! It is nine months until the next sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries.

Charles Mulvey display

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum exhibition, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master” is a retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. Locals and tourists collected his paintings and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There are more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.

Adopt a Tree

CHINOOK – Saturday is the last day for Fort Columbia Family Nature Activities this year. The topic for the day is cedar. Discover all the ways cedar has been used and take home a variety of activities about this much used wood. Visitors will be able to take home their own seedling cedar tree to plant in their yard. Approximately 100 seedlings are available to give out, until they are gone. ILWACO – Saturday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is the next first Saturday volunteer day for Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers are invited to help plant trees and shrubs along the Cutthroat Climb and Salmon Interpretive Trail at refuge headquarters. Willapa Players auditions

RAYMOND – Willapa Players will perform “Same Time Next Year,” by Bernard Slade, a popular 1975 Broadway play that features only two actors – one male and one female. Director Bob Stalder announced that auditions will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Stalder says he is looking for a man and woman who can portray from age 35 to age 50 on stage. He added that he will need a lot of help on the set and costumes as the show takes place in a rustic cabin and has six scenes, each set in a different year. Slow drag

ILWACO – The slow drag at the Port of Ilwaco runs from 4 p.m. to dusk on Friday, Sept. 10. Hot rods will line the Port of Ilwaco waterfront for the Slow Drag Contest and will compete in a coasting competition. Cars have about 15 feet to accelerate and then will coast for 100 feet. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line. All of the businesses along the Port will be open and offering a variety of specials. So, come on down to the Port of Ilwaco.

27th Rod Run

OCEAN PARK – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and head to the 27th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 at the Beach Barons field in Ocean Park. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. An admission will be charged per day. More than 900 cars will be at the field for two days. On the stage will be an Elvis look and sound-alike entertainer who will perform from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, plus a performance by “Buddy Holly,” and Tracy Barton as Merle Haggard. There will be vendors selling food and car related items as well. The Beach Baron signature T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and pins will be available for sale also. Elvis tribute

OCEAN PARK – The Beach Barons are having a spectacular show at their 27th Rod Run to the End of the World this year. On Saturday, Sept. 11 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be a tribute to the ’50s with Justin Shandor as Elvis, Tracy Barton as Merle Haggard and a terrific Buddy Holly impersonator on the stage at the Rod Run. The hours for the show are 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shandor is a recent winner of the “Best Elvis Impersonator” in Las Vegas, Nev., and won the 2010 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis, Tenn. You’ve got to see him to believe it! There is an admission charge for the Rod Run of $5 and that entitles you to see the fabulous cars that will be on display as well as see the show.

Are You Ready?” led by Stephanie Fritts, director of Pacific County Emergency Management. Resolve to be ready. Learn about NOAA weather radios, outdoor warning sirens, mapping your neighborhood, disaster preparedness kits and emergency contacts. Wines from Down Under

SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina, as well as light treats. Remnants of the Past

It’s a Drill

PACIFIC COUNTY -On Sept. 15, shortly after 10:15 a.m., the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens will be tested sounding both the standard test message and the actual warning tone. The AHAB sirens in Pacific County and the other outer Washington coastal counties are being activated to conduct a true “end-to-end” test of the entire tsunami warning system. This test will help familiarize residents with the sound made by the AHAB sirens during an actual tsunami warning. It will differ from the routine monthly testing that occurs on the first Monday of each month since it will broadcast an audible siren wail tone instead of a chime tone; however, the voice message will be exactly the same as the routine test message. NOAA weather radios set to receive the required monthly test will also activate during this test. Citizens with questions or concerns should contact the Pacific County Emergency Management office at 642-9340 or 875-9340.

Golf Tournament

LONG BEACH – The 2nd Annual Christmas Angels Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, beginning at 11 a.m., at Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. Flu Shots

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Pacific County Health Department is offering seasonal flu shots by appointment only for adults at both health department sites in Long Beach and South Bend. Shots will be offered in Long Beach from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on Sept. 27 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Oct. 4. In South Bend, they will be available from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 24 and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Oct. 4. Please call to make an appointment at 642-9349 or in South Bend call 875-9343. The cost is $25, and Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. The CDC and public health officials recommend that everyone over the age of six months be vaccinated against the flu. This year the seasonal flu shot will protect you against H1N1, as well as other flu viruses that are beginning to circulate. Please contact your private provider to discuss getting your child vaccinated. Yearly flu vaccination should begin as soon as vaccine is available and continue throughout the influenza season, into December, January and beyond.

Bikers ride

PUGET ISLAND – Angora Hiking Club has a bike-hike scheduled for Puget Island, on Saturday, Sept. 25. This is a very easy bike ride, no hills and very little auto traffic, with a stop for lunch. The Westport Ferry leaves at 10:15 a.m., and participants can meet at Basin Street and West Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:15 a.m. Departure for the ferry terminal will be promptly at 9:30 a.m. There is a charge for the ferry. The Angora club is unable to provide bike transportation to the ferry dock, but individual members may be able to assist. Bikers are asked to bring a lunch, water, bike helmet, riding gloves, and weather appropriate outer clothing. Art Show registration

LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Celebrating 40 years of art, Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members. The registration deadline is Sept. 21.
