ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program is now distributing basic school supplies to all students in grades one through 12 through the Student Needs Assistance Program. PC Fair

MENLO – The Pacific County Fair is coming Aug. 25 through Aug. 28. This year’s theme is “Get your kicks on Highway 6.” Special events include the idol talent show, holiday greeting card contest, jump rope contest, carnival, animal and floral entries and more. Pacific Transit has special runs and prices to and from the fairgrounds.

Family stories

Author Readings

ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, hosts the Authors’ Showcase on Aug. 25. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. OCEAN PARK – From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 26, Bay Avenue Gallery at 1306 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park hosts more than a dozen Peninsula vocalists in “A Little Evening Music at the Gallery.” The free event allows residents and visitors to hear popular songs, enjoy light refreshments, and view the work of 28 local artists. Gallery co-owners Bette Lu Krause and Sue Raymond and local accompanist-music director Barbara Bate are presenting the songs and singers in short sets, allowing for conversation and refreshments as well as viewing local artists’ work in a variety of media. Friday, Aug. 27Evening of One Acts

ILWACO – The 2nd Story Playhouse at 108 Spruce Street in Ilwaco is hosting an evening of one act plays showcasing local writers and directors. This event is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27 and Saturday, Aug. 28 and at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 29. “Just Joshin’,” a book published by Jan Bono last November, has been adapted for the live theater stage and will be presented by the Peninsula Players during their One-Act Festival, August 27-29. The one acts include the following: “Kid’s Skits and Jokes,” directed by Rita Smith; “Barbara Ann,” written by Rose Power and directed by Karl Johnson; “Just Joshin’,” written by Jan Bono and directed by Candace Carteen; and “Remember Me,” written by Larry Fraller and directed by Diane DeSeranno. Parkinson support

OCEAN PARK – The Parkinson’s disease support group meets from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 27 at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church, 24002 “U” Street in Ocean Park. This is the annual picnic and all are welcome. This is a great opportunity for folks who haven’t attended a meeting in the past and would like more information about the group. Charles Mulvey display

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum exhibition, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master” is a retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. Locals and tourists collected his paintings and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There are more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.

Cancer support group

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics’ Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, Aug. 27, at noon in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospital’s oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospital’s chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. AA meetings

OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW – Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Cribbage

LONG BEACH – The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Tavern at the corner of Pioneer Road and Pacific Highway. Play is according to ACC rules. SummerFest events

LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. In addition, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday and noon to 2 p.m., on Sunday, bring the kids for a children’s safety fair. Then from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the fantastic Naselle Marimba Band will perform in Lewis and Clark Square both days. Come to downtown Long Beach and have some fun.

Sunday, Aug. 29Vesper services

OYSTERVILLE – Vesper Services is set for 3 p.m., Aug. 29 in the wonderful Oysterville Church. Presbyterian Pastor Emeritus Ret. Dean Mead will officiate. Katherine Holway Smith, a soprano, will provide music, and Jeanne Bellinger will be the organist for this service. This is a wonderful, casual, come as you are event and everyone is welcome.

Edible gardening

ILWACO – On Sunday, Aug. 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., a fun and interesting Winter Edible Gardening Workshop will be held at the Karnofski Garden at 1636 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, to assist you in providing fresh food from your garden during the winter months. Vera and Jim Karnofski will host and instruct folks on preparing and enriching the soil and what types of vegetable seeds and plants work well in our marine climate through the winter. They will talk about easy ground covers and greenhouse covers as well as using the vegetables in your daily cuisine. Recipes will be available, and please bring your winter vegetable recipes to share. Admission is canned or dry goods, toiletries or laundry products for the struggling local food banks. Elks summer picnic

LONG BEACH – On Sunday, Aug. 29, the Long Beach Elks are holding their annual picnic at Wildwood RV Park in Long Beach. Starting at 2 p.m., there will be good food, beverages, games, a dunk tank and raffle prizes as part of the fun for Elks members and their guests.

Bingo!

LONG BEACH – The Elks has bingo every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. The 15-game program includes a Texas blackout and a progressive $250 blackout. Snacks and pull-tabs are available. The public is welcome.

Grants Available

PACIFIC COUNTY – Pacific County Marine Resource Committee has made some grant funds available to support their mission to serve as a steward for the marine and estuarine resources in our county by facilitating science based policies, research, and education that enhance the sustainability of the economy and ecology of our communities. Funds available are $12,950, with the grant range from $500 to $10,000. Grant applications should be sent to Pacific Conservation District Office, P.O. Box 336, South Bend, WA 98586 or delivered to 1216 W. Robert Bush Drive in South Bend, by Aug. 31. Future EventsLibrary book sale

OCEAN PARK – The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Sept. 3 through Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and $.50 for regular-size paper.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., bring your standard-size paper grocery bag and for $3 you can fill it with books of your choice. Stock up! It is nine months until the next sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries.

Slow drag

ILWACO – The slow drag at the Port of Ilwaco runs from 4 p.m. to dusk on Friday, Sept. 10. Hot rods will line the Port of Ilwaco waterfront for the Slow Drag Contest and will compete in a coasting competition. Cars have about 15 feet to accelerate and then will coast for 100 feet. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line. All of the businesses along the Port will be open and offering a variety of specials. So, come on down to the Port of Ilwaco.

27th Rod Run

OCEAN PARK – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and head to the 27th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 at the Beach Barons field in Ocean Park. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. An admission will be charged per day. More than 900 cars will be at the field for two days. On the stage will be an Elvis look and sound-alike entertainer who will perform from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, plus a performance by Buddy Holly, and Tracy Barton as Merle Haggard. There will be vendors selling food and car related items as well. The Beach Baron signature T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and pins will be available for sale also. Wines from Down Under

SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina for you to taste. Fresh and light treats will compliment your wine choices. There will also be beer and non-alcoholic beverages available at this event and there will be a table for desserts and coffee. Remnants of the Past

STELLA – On Saturday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., come enjoy history and time with your neighbors at the Stella Museum complex on SR-4. Buildings at the site are in desperate need of major restoration work and the Stella Historical Society needs help. This strictly volunteer group invites all to come check out the variety of buildings and historical displays, demonstrations, raffles, plants and much more. A minor admission donation is charged. Bikers ride

PUGET ISLAND – Angora Hiking Club has a bike-hike scheduled for Puget Island, on Saturday, Sept. 25. This is a very easy bike ride, no hills and very little auto traffic, with a stop for lunch. The Westport Ferry leaves at 10:15 a.m., and attendees should meet across from Kentucky Fried Chicken at Basin Street and West Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:15 a.m. Departure for the ferry terminal will be promptly at 9:30 a.m. There is a charge for the ferry. The Angora club is unable to provide bike transportation to the ferry dock, but individual members may be able to assist. Bikers are asked to bring a lunch, water, bike helmet, riding gloves, and weather appropriate outer clothing. Restrooms are available at the Cathlamet dock. Art Show registration

LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Celebrating 40 years of art, Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members. The registration deadline is Sept. 21.
