Tree farm tour
RAYMOND – Pacific County Farm Forestry is hosting a tour at the Hillery Tree Farm on Oxbow Road in Raymond, on Aug. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. This tree farm is in two parcels that contrast in age and management styles, with one parcel purchased in 1972 and the second in 2009. The first parcel shows the impact of the December 2007 storm on the small forest landowner. The second parcel was planted in 1984 and has had no silvicultural activity since. Charles Mulvey display
ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum exhibition, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master” is a retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. Locals and tourists collected his paintings and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There are more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.
Seniors farmers market
ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program is teaming up with the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors. Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seniors may pick up fresh produce in the dining room at the Ilwaco Community Building. This program provides fresh fruits and vegetables to lower-income seniors with the goal of improving health and nutritional status of older residents. It also supports local farming by increasing the use of farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible you must be a resident of Washington state, 60 years old or older (or over 55 if you are Native American) and you must be below 185 percent of the Federal poverty level. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held Aug. 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. FORT COLUMBIA – Fort Columbia continues their family and youth nature activities each weekend from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will be held in the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center. On Saturday, Aug. 21 learn about the salmon life-cycle and discover the life-cycle of the salmon while making a salmon bracelet to take home. Then on Sunday, Aug. 22 learn about wind speed and weather vanes. Also, on both Saturday and Sunday the World War II Living History group will be at Fort Columbia. Discover what life as a soldier was like as you interact with the Coast Artillerymen. These are short, fun activities and crafts that are designed for a variety of age groups. SummerFest events
LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. The Beards Hollow Pirates Theatre and crafts will be presented in Fish Alley from noon to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Then from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., steel drummer Terry Barber will perform in the gazebo at 3rd and Pacific. Come to downtown Long Beach and have some fun.

PACIFIC COUNTY – Pacific County Marine Resource Committee has made some grant funds available to support their mission to serve as a steward for the marine and estuarine resources in our county by facilitating science based policies, research, and education that enhance the sustainability of the economy and ecology of our communities. Slow drag
ILWACO – The slow drag at the Port of Ilwaco runs from 4 p.m. to dusk on Friday, Sept. 10. Hot rods will line the Port of Ilwaco waterfront for the Slow Drag Contest and will compete in a coasting competition. Cars have about 15 feet to accelerate and then will coast for 100 feet. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line. All of the businesses along the Port will be open and offering a variety of specials. So, come on down to the Port of Ilwaco.
27th Rod Run
OCEAN PARK – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and head to the 27th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 at the Beach Barons field in Ocean Park. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. An admission is charged per day. More than 900 cars will be at the field for two days.
On the stage will be an Elvis look and sound-alike entertainer who will perform from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, plus a performance by Buddy Holly, and Tracy Barton as Merle Haggard. There will be vendors selling food and car related items as well. The Beach Baron signature T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and pins will be available for sale also. Wines from Down Under
SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina for you to taste. Fresh and light treats will compliment your wine choices. There will also be beer and non-alcoholic beverages available at this event and there will be a table for desserts and coffee. OCEAN PARK – The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries’ used book sale will be held Sept. 3 through Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and $.50 for regular-size paper. On Sunday, Sept. 5, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., bring your standard-size paper grocery bag and for $3 you can fill it with books of your choice. Stock up! It is nine months until the next sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries.
Art Show registration
LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Celebrating 40 years of art, Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members. The registration deadline is Sept. 21.
