LONG BEACH – A 5K run/walk to raise awareness of domestic violence will happen on Aug. 7 starting at the Bolstad beach approach. Register between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, at the train depot (across from Dennis Company in Long Beach), or the morning of the race, between 7 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. A memorial ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers and participant ribbons will be given for all finishers in all age groups. A small number of T-shirts will be available for late registration, or one can be shipped to you at a later date. Charles Mulvey display
ILWACO – From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Aug. 6, Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master.” This exhibition is a retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. His paintings were collected by locals and tourists and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There will be more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.
Seniors farmers market
ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program is teaming up with the Senior Farmers market Nutrition Program to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors. Aug. 6 and Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seniors may pick up fresh produce in the dining room at the Ilwaco Community Building. This program provides fresh fruits and vegetables to lower-income seniors with the goal of improving health and nutritional status of old residents. It also supports local farming by increasing the use of farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible you must be a resident of Washington state, 60-years-old or older (or over 55 if you are Native American) and you must be below 185 percent of the Federal poverty level. Saturday, Aug. 7Big Band Concert
ASTORIA – On Saturday Aug. 7, the North Coast Big Band will perform a swing concert at Clatsop Community Performing Arts Center, at 16th and Franklin, in Astoria, beginning at 7 p.m. The program features music by band member David Robertson as well as Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and many other big band favorites. Admission is $10. The band is composed of five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, vocalist, piano, bass, drums and guitar. Fast Art at the Point
LEADBETTER – Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge invite folks to a ‘look at nature and do art’ walk starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 7 at Leadbetter Point National Wildlife Refuge. Walkers will head north along the bayside beach to the south end of the large salt marsh and back. You may use any art form, with 15 minutes at each scene, including set up. Sketching with pencil, charcoal or pastel sticks is recommended. Park in the north parking lot (at the end of the road). The cost is $20 but is free to Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge members. Space is limited, so please register by calling 642-2400 or e-mail Nancy Beliveau, beliveau47@peoplepc.com. This hike will be cancelled by wet, windy weather.

FORT COLUMBIA – This summer Fort Columbia will have family and youth nature activities each weekend from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will be held in the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center. On Saturday, Aug. 7 the topic is, “How Windy Is It?” Attendees will learn about wind speed and weather vanes. Then on Sunday, Aug. 8, learn how to identify regional animal tracks. LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. The Naselle Marimba Band will perform on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lewis and Clark Square. Plus, there is a sidewalk chalk art contest at 2 p.m., by the gazebo downtown and the Beards Hollow Pirates Theatre and Crafts event is from noon to 3 p.m. both days. ASTORIA – The Sunset Empire Orchid Society meets Sunday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m., at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria in the east conference room. PENINSULA – From noon to 5 p.m., on Aug. 8, there will be an edible gardening tour at eight locations on the Peninsula. The tour features local food gardens growing a variety of different foods. Tickets are $7 for adults (or five cans of food); $5 for seniors (or bring three cans of food); children are admitted free. Proceeds go to benefit the local food banks and His Supper Table. PACIFIC COUNTY – Pacific County Marine Resource Committee has made some grant funds available to support their mission to serve as a steward for the marine and estuarine resources in our county by facilitating science based policies, research and education that enhance the sustainability of the economy and ecology of our communities. SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program is Aug. 13. The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices. Wahkiakum fair
SKAMOKAWA – The 102nd Annual Wahkiakum County Fair is Aug. 19 through Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The theme is “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams.” There will be a variety of 4-H activities and livestock shows, lumberjack exhibitions, several top musical performers, a reptile show, salmon barbecue and the amusement rides. MENLO – The Pacific County Fair is coming Aug. 25 through Aug. 28. This year’s theme is “Get your kicks on Highway 6.” Special events include the idol talent show, holiday greeting card contest, jump rope contest, carnival, animal and floral entries and more. SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina for you to taste. Fresh and light treats will compliment your wine choices. There will also be beer and non-alcoholic beverages available at this event and there will be a table for desserts and coffee. LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members.
