Agricultural Incentives
SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program is Aug. 13. The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices. Interested producers are encouraged to contact the local office at 1216 Robert Bush Drive or check the website at www.wa.nrcs.usda.gov for more information.
Charles Mulvey display
ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage’s exhibit, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master,” is a retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. His paintings were collected by locals and tourists and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There will be more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.
Chronic disease mgmt
ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held Aug. 13, 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. Kite buggy demos
LONG BEACH – Two hours before and two hours after low tide, Aug. 14 through Aug. 16, buggy riders will demonstrate the fun and safety of kite power. PACIFIC COUNTY – Pacific County Marine Resource Committee has made some grant funds available to support their mission to serve as a steward for the marine and estuarine resources in our county by facilitating science based policies, research, and education that enhance the sustainability of the economy and ecology of our communities. ILWACO – Coastal Community Action Program is teaming up with the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors. Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seniors may pick up fresh produce in the dining room at the Ilwaco Community Building. This program provides fresh fruits and vegetables to lower-income seniors with the goal of improving health and nutritional status of older residents. It also supports local farming by increasing the use of farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible you must be a resident of Washington state, 60 years old or older (or over 55 if you are Native American) and you must be below 185 percent of the Federal poverty level. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina for you to taste. Fresh and light treats will compliment your wine choices. There will also be beer and non-alcoholic beverages available at this event and there will be a table for desserts and coffee. Tickets will be available at Cathlamet stores and at Redmen Hall. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event. ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, is the location for a monthly showcase of local authors held the fourth Wednesday evening of the month. The next gathering is Aug. 26. Coffee and goodies will be available at 6 p.m., and readings begin at 7 p.m. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Celebrating 40 years of art, Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members. The registration deadline is Sept. 21.
