Willapa Players auditions

RAYMOND – Willapa Players will perform “Same Time Next Year,” by Bernard Slade, a popular 1975 Broadway play that features only two actors – one male and one female. Director Bob Stalder announced that auditions will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Stalder says he is looking for a man and woman who can portray from age 35 to age 50 on stage. He added that he will need a lot of help on the set and with costumes as the show takes place in a rustic cabin and has six scenes, each set in a different year. Friday, Sept. 10Slow drag

ILWACO – The slow drag at the Port of Ilwaco runs from 4 p.m. to dusk on Friday, Sept. 10. Hot rods will line the Port of Ilwaco waterfront for the Slow Drag Contest and will compete in a coasting competition. Cars have about 15 feet to accelerate and then will coast for 100 feet. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line. All of the businesses along the Port will be open and offering a variety of specials. So, come on down to the Port of Ilwaco.

Saturday, Sept. 1127th Rod Run

OCEAN PARK – The public is encouraged to head to the 27th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 at the Beach Barons field in Ocean Park. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission will be charged per day. More than 900 cars will be at the field for two days. On the stage will be an Elvis look and sound-alike entertainer who will perform from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and Tracy Barton will perform as Merle Haggard. There will be vendors selling food and car related items as well. The Beach Baron signature T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and pins will be available for sale also. Elvis tribute

OCEAN PARK – The Beach Barons are having a spectacular show at their 27th Rod Run to the End of the World this year. On Saturday, Sept. 11 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be a tribute to the ’50s with Justin Shandor as Elvis, Tracy Barton as Merle Haggard and a terrific Buddy Holly impersonator on the stage at the Rod Run. The hours for the show are 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Shandor is a recent winner of the “Best Elvis Impersonator” in Las Vegas, Nev., and won the 2010 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis, Tenn. SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina, as well as light treats. Remnants of the Past

Quilts displayed

SKAMOKAWA – On Sept. 11, an exhibit of quilts by the River City Strippers, a Wahkiakum County based quilters group, opens at Redmen Hall, located at 1304 S.R. 4 in Skamokawa. This will be a celebration of their 10th anniversary as a group, having started with 11 members in February 2000, and now grown to just over 40 quilters. They meet weekly in Cathlamet and have become well known for their comfort quilts they make and donate to seriously ill children and adults in local hospitals. The exhibit will run until Oct. 24 with a reception for the quilters on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Desserts, coffee and juice will be served. Many of the quilters will be there to share their techniques and ideas about quilting, and about their quilt group that meets at a local church every week. OYSTERVILLE – Brier and Dane Gregory, accompanied by Barbara Poulshock, will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12 in the historic Oysterville Church. Wednesday, Sept. 15It’s a Drill

PACIFIC COUNTY -On Sept. 15, shortly after 10:15 a.m., the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens will be tested sounding both the standard test message and the actual warning tone. The AHAB sirens in Pacific County and the other outer Washington coastal counties are being activated to conduct a true “end-to-end” test of the entire tsunami warning system. This test will help familiarize residents with the sound made by the AHAB sirens during an actual tsunami warning. It will differ from the routine monthly testing that occurs on the first Monday of each month since it will broadcast an audible siren wail tone instead of a chime tone; however, the voice message will be exactly the same as the routine test message. NOAA weather radios set to receive the required monthly test will also activate during this test. Citizens with questions or concerns should contact the Pacific County Emergency Management office at 642-9340 or 875-9340.

Flu Shots

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Pacific County Health Department is offering seasonal flu shots by appointment only for adults at both health department sites in Long Beach and South Bend. Shots will be offered in Long Beach from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on Sept. 27 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Oct. 4. In South Bend, they will be available from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 24 and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Sept. 29. The CDC and public health officials recommend that everyone over the age of six months be vaccinated against the flu. This year the seasonal flu shot will protect you against H1N1, as well as other flu viruses that are beginning to circulate. Please contact your private provider to discuss getting your child vaccinated. Bikers ride

PUGET ISLAND – Angora Hiking Club has a bike-hike scheduled for Puget Island, on Saturday, Sept. 25. This is a very easy bike ride, no hills and very little auto traffic, with a stop for lunch. The Westport Ferry leaves at 10:15 a.m., and participants can meet at Basin Street and West Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:15 a.m. Departure for the ferry terminal will be promptly at 9:30 a.m. There is a charge for the ferry. The Angora club is unable to provide bike transportation to the ferry dock, but individual members may be able to assist. Bikers are asked to bring a lunch, water, bike helmet, riding gloves, and weather appropriate outer clothing. Great Columbia crossing

MEGLER – The 29th Annual Great Columbia Crossing 10K run/walk is set for Oct. 3 beginning at 9 a.m. Parking is set up at the Port of Astoria or the Port of Chinook, with shuttle buses leaving Astoria every 20 minutes starting at 7 a.m., and departing the Port of Chinook at 7 a.m. Registration is limited to 3,000 participants. Register at www.greatcolumbiacrossing.com until Sept. 29 or at the Astoria Warrenton Chamber from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Oct. 2. There will be no day of race registrations. The cost is $30 ($35 after Sept. 15), or $20 per entry to youth 8- to 18-years old ($25 after Sept. 15). T-shirts are optional and available for an additional $16.

Art Show registration

LONG BEACH – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association’s 40th Annual Fall Art Show is now open. The show runs Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. Celebrating 40 years of art, Peninsula Arts Association has a diverse membership known for bringing exciting work to each show. Artists will compete in 23 categories and participation is limited to PAA members. The registration deadline is Sept. 21. Tree farm management

CHEHALIS – On Oct. 9, the Washington Tree Farm Program will sponsor a day-long Forestry Educational Seminar, “Seedling Management and Economics for the Tree Farm” at is the Veterans Memorial Museum, 100 SW Veterans Way in Chehalis. A diverse range of topics should provide something of interest to small forestland owners, foresters, and loggers. Subjects covered will include: Three basic herbicides and application procedures; Cedar, Valley Ponderosa pine and Alder; Financial consequences of stand management decisions; Forestland investment, and Log market outlook. Advanced registration by Sept. 30 is required.
