PACIFIC COUNTY – Even though face-to-face master gardener plant clinics have concluded for the year, you can get answers to your gardening questions year-round by using the local WSU master gardener online plant clinic. To submit your question, go to www.pnwmg.org and click on “Ask a Master Gardener,” found on the left side of the screen. WSU Master Gardeners from Grays Harbor and Pacific counties work year-round to answer any questions you submit. The website also has a wealth of gardening information, much of it specifically oriented to our local area.

Author Readings

ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, is the location of the next Authors’ Showcase, set for Sept. 22. Writers are encouraged to share work in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Art curriculum/workshops

PACIFIC COUNTY – Peninsula Arts Association is offering three curriculum compatible art project workshops for teachers in Pacific County, worth eight clock hours of professional development, sponsored by the Ocean Beach School District, at no cost to the participants. The workshops will be held on Sept. 23 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., and Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Barn on Bay, 2311 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. Participants will learn three art projects per session and receive a bound lesson plan booklet of all projects. It will be a hands-on learning experience under the guidance of PAA Education Liaison Sue Raymond. ILWACO – The Peninsula Players Radio Theater will go on for the first time live from their studio at 2nd Story Playhouse in downtown Ilwaco. Show times are at 7 p.m., Sept. 24 and 25; and at 2 p.m., on Sept. The program will be “The Man with Bogart’s Face,” written by Andrew Senady and directed by Ed Ahlers. Of all the movie stars, in all the movies all over the world, is it any wonder that someone, somewhere, would actually want to become Humphrey Bogart. That is what happened. Return to a time of cases, danger and dough, like the days of old when there were causes and flags and dames worth fighting for.

PENINSULA – Peninsula Arts Association presents artwork for the months of September and October. Marilyn Casey’s coastal paintings are being shown at the Ocean Beach Hospital. Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek are showing their varied paintings at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road. Elizabeth Bonn-Zimmerman is showing her paintings at the Ilwaco library. Saturday, Sept. 25Disaster Preparedness Fair

OCEAN PARK – Are you prepared for the unexpected? You have an opportunity to learn more about getting prepared by making a disaster plan. A community Disaster Preparedness Fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25 at Ocean Park Elementary School. Special guests include: a representative from Gov. Gregoire’s office, and representatives from Washington State Emergency Management, NOAA Weather Service in Portland, the chief hazard geologist from the Department of Natural Resources, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, United States Coast Guard and more. At this preparedness fair you can learn basic first-aid, learn how to operate a fire extinguisher, learn about flood insurance, earthquakes, tsunamis and vertical evacuation and much more. Evac-U-Walk

OCEAN PARK – The public is invited to participate in the Evac-U-Walk set for 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 25. You can catch the trolley at Ocean Park Elementary School or head to the Ocean Park beach approach. This is not a race. Participants will walk east on Bay Avenue to “U” Street and finish at the Moose Lodge. The trolley will return walkers to the school. Walkers are encouraged to time themselves in or to measure their walking speed and apply that information to their personal evacuation route.

LB clean sweep

LONG BEACH – On Saturday, Sept. 25 and Sunday, Sept. 26, residents and the city of Long Beach will have the opportunity to participate in their first town cleanup. This is the time to shovel of the last of the summer gunk out of the yard, clean the attic and garage, sweep out the beach cabin for the season and get rid of those items you have been wanting to toss. A bright orange flyer, which includes a $10 coupon, will be mailed to residents to help defray costs. Bring items to the old county building at 318 2nd Street in Long Beach and drop them in the containers marked, such as yard waste, unpainted/untreated wood or similar. If you have larger items, such as a couch or appliance, make arrangements with Peninsula Sanitation at 642-2541 and use the coupon to defray the cost. Fun ride & chili feed

MENLO – The Willapa Hills Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen are hosting a ride on Sept. 25 off Oxbow Road in Menlo. The first rider will be out at 10 a.m., the last rider at 11 a.m. The cost to participate is $10 per person, which includes the ride, chili and a pop. (The meal only is $6.) Museum day

LONG BEACH – On Saturday, Sept. 25, the World Kite Museum in Long Beach will participate in the sixth annual Smithsonian Museum Day. A free Smithsonian ticket is available for you and a companion either in your Smithsonian Magazine or by downloading one at www.smithsonian.com/museumday and printing out the official pass which will provide free admission for two people to participating museums. One ticket is permitted per household, per e-mail address. Besides learning from these special events for the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, come and enjoy the thrill, joy, art, science and world history available daily at the World Kite Museum. Bikers ride

PUGET ISLAND – Angora Hiking Club has a bike-hike scheduled for Puget Island on Saturday, Sept. 25. This is a very easy bike ride, no hills and very little auto traffic, with a stop for lunch. The Westport Ferry leaves at 10:15 a.m., and participants can meet at Basin Street and West Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:15 a.m. Departure for the ferry terminal will be promptly at 9:30 a.m. There is a charge for the ferry. The Angora club is unable to provide bike transportation to the ferry dock, but individual members may be able to assist. Bikers are asked to bring a lunch, water, bike helmet, riding gloves, and weather appropriate outer clothing. RX drug turn in

PACIFIC COUNTY – In an effort to eliminate unused/unwanted pharmaceutical drugs from our community, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring a National RX Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WellSpring Community Network will partner with local law enforcement agencies and the Family Health Center to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our community’s medicine cabinets. Prescription drug abuse is our nation’s fastest-growing drug problem and often times the source is right at home in the medicine cabinet. Monday, Sept. 27Flu Shots

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Pacific County Health Department is offering seasonal flu shots by appointment only for adults at both health department sites in Long Beach and South Bend. Shots will be offered in Long Beach from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on Sept. 27 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Oct. 4. In South Bend, they will be available from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 24 and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Sept. 29. Please call to make an appointment in Long Beach at 642-9349 or in South Bend call 875-9343. The cost is $25, and Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. The CDC and public health officials recommend that everyone over the age of six months be vaccinated against the flu. This year the seasonal flu shot will protect you against H1N1, as well as other flu viruses that are beginning to circulate. Please contact your private provider to discuss getting your child vaccinated. Yearly flu vaccination should begin as soon as vaccine is available and continue throughout the influenza season, into December, January and beyond.

Reservations recommended. Hinderlie went to high school with Shelburne Inn proprietor Laurie Anderson and is planning a return visit with his wife, Helma, this month. Hinderlie is a professor of music at Loyola University New Orleans. He works with students in the Music Industry Program, teaching contemporary music. He has performed throughout the world, including concerts in the Far East, the former Soviet Union, the Republics of Georgia and Armenia, the Middle East, Europe and throughout the U.S. His latest recording, “Hinderlie Plays Hinderlie,” features all original compositions.

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Timberland Regional Library Foundation (TRLF) and the Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring their first Scrabble-Thon competition. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 1. Local competitions will be held Oct. 9, at a Timberland Regional Library. Willapa Grange Reactivation

FRANCES – Lewis Pacific Swiss Society will be hosting their 41st annual Oktoberfest, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Swiss Park in Frances. Art Show

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association invites you to their 40th Annual Fall Art Show and Sale opening Friday, Oct. 8 and running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Monday, Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum, 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Artists compete for awards in 23 categories; the show’s Featured Artist is Lonnie Acord, winner of Spring 2010’s Judges’ Choice – Best in Show. Inspired Creations shopping experience provides same day art inspired purchase options and is a great way to kick off holiday gift shopping. Visitors to the show are invited to vote for the People’s Choice winner and donated art will be raffled to support PAAs high school graduate scholarship. The drawing for Eric Wiegardt’s original painting, “San Juan Reflections,” occurs at 2 p.m., Oct. 10. Tickets for this special raffle are currently on sale at www.beachartist.org. In addition, a silent auction of framed, original watercolors by past PAA member Marcia Rockwell will be open through the first three days of the show. Proceeds from the donated art featured in these two events benefit PAA’s Art Enrichment Program. Admission is free and parking is plentiful. PAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Boating safety class

ILWACO – There will be a boating safety class talk by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the upstairs classroom at the Port of Ilwaco office at a165 Howerton Way in Ilwaco. The cost is $25 and pre-registration is requested. The class will assist participants in getting a Washington state Boater Safety card. 100th anniversary celebration

SOUTH BEND – The Willapa Harbor Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the building of the Pacific County courthouse in South Bend. There are several weekend packages available that feature tours of local museums, courthouse tours, a celebration ceremony, followed by a concert by the talented Navy Band Northwest . On Saturday, Oct. 9, courthouse tours will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, the celebration in the courthouse rotunda is at 1 p.m., and the Navy band concert is at 3 p.m., in the South Bend gym. In addition the special event “A Night of Living History” will be held that evening, with the social hour starting at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the program including performances by Scott Cowell and Bryan Harrison among others. Tree farm management

CHEHALIS – On Oct. 9, the Washington Tree Farm Program will sponsor a day-long Forestry Educational Seminar, “Seedling Management and Economics for the Tree Farm” at is the Veterans Memorial Museum, 100 SW Veterans Way in Chehalis. A diverse range of topics should provide something of interest to small forestland owners, foresters, and loggers. Subjects covered will include: Three basic herbicides and application procedures; Cedar, Valley Ponderosa pine and Alder; Financial consequences of stand management decisions; Forestland investment, and Log market outlook. Advanced registration by Sept. 30 is required.
