MEGLER – A 21-month long project that started this week on the Astoria Bridge across the Columbia River will cause occasional traffic delays.
The project consists of recoating the steel on the bridge, starting on the Washington side of the bridge. The work that starts Monday includes installation of the coating containment structure.
A 35 mph speed limit through the construction zone will be maintained for the duration of the project. Flaggers will control single lane traffic during construction activities as required. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes and drive through the area with caution.

Jetty meeting
ASTORIA – The forthcoming comprehensive renovation of the jetties at the mouth of the Columbia is the subject of a public meeting hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Dr., Astoria. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with a presentation starting at 6 p.m. with time for questions and answers to follow.

Relay for Life dinner

Water system flushing
LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach is conducting flushing and flow testing of hydrants in the Long Beach and Seaview area through Friday, Feb. 5 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This action may cause temporary discoloration of the water due to iron sediment and a reduction in pressure. Census workers wanted
PACIFIC COUNTY – The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring temporary workers to ensure the 2010 Census is a success. To qualify you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, be able to pass a background check and take a 30-minute, multiple-choice basic employment test that measures knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform a variety of census jobs. Workers will also be required to possess a valid driver’s license and have use of a vehicle. U.S. citizenship is required to apply for census jobs, however, non-citizens will only be hired for these positions if there are no qualified U.S. citizens available. All temporary census employees must be able to commit to training, for which they will be compensated at their regular hourly rate. Upcoming tests and informational sessions will be held on Feb. 5 at 1 p.m., at St. Mary’s Parish is Seaview and on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m., at the Ilwaco Community Building. Additional sessions will be offered in Ocean Park and Naselle. Space is limited so reserve your place by calling 866-861-2010 (toll free). ILWACO – Artwork at the Ocean Beach Hospital is from the first and second place winners of the fall Peninsula Art Association art show. PENINSULA – The 13th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place Feb. 12 through Feb. 15. This is a good way for kids and parents to do something with wildlife and the outdoors. NASELLE – It time again for the American Legion Auxiliary annual Valentine smorgasbord from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Feb. 14 at Naselle High School. IHS benefit hoop camp
ILWACO – A basketball camp for girls in grades two through six will be held Monday, Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ilwaco High School lower gym. The cost is $15 and checks can be made to IHS. The camp is a part of Lady Fishermen Ashley Tapio’s senior project. For those who register by Feb. 4 they will receive a free camp T-shirt. Coach Ned Bittner and Tapio will teach basketball fundamentals and skills during the camp. They will also discuss brain cancer advocacy during the camp as Tapio’s grandmother Phyllis Kuusista and Bittner’s mother-in-law Linda Cheuvrant are both suffering from the disease. Registration forms are available from girls basketball youth coaches and at both grade schools and campers can register the day of the event. Campers are asked to bring a sack lunch and water and dress in gym shoes and athletic attire. Proceeds from the camp will go to benefit brain cancer research and donations are also welcome. WW Treatment Plant
