PENINSULA – The parents of Ilwaco High Class of 2010 are currently selling hanging flower baskets and color bowls as the last fundraiser for the grad night party. The graduation night party was adopted many years ago in an effort to keep graduates engaged in a safe and substance-free environment during the hours immediately following the graduation ceremony. Thursday, April 22Tsunami Safe Haven

PENINSULA – An event called, ‘Tsunami Safe Haven Opportunities on the Long Beach Peninsula’ specifically focusing on the north end of the Peninsula (Ocean Park, Oysterville and Nahcotta areas is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm., on Thursday, April 22 at the Ocean Park fire hall meeting room. This is the first meeting in a two part series that looks at potential sites in the north end of the Peninsula that may be suitable for the construction of vertical evacuation structures to serve as “high ground” after a large, subduction zone earthquake, in preparation for the ensuing tsunami. The meeting will be conducted in coordination with the University of Washington (College of Built Environments), Pacific County Emergency Management, and Washington State Emergency Management. Cancer support

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics’ Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, April 23, at noon in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospital’s oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospital’s chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. LONG BEACH – On Friday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., come to the Elks Lodge at 110 N. LONG BEACH – From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 24, the Arthur Stand Insurance agency, along with Liberty Northwest and Safeco Insurance are sponsoring a free shred-a-thon at 205 Bolstad Avenue East in Long Beach. Come shred obsolete tax documents, bank statements and cancelled checks, credit card documents, financial statements, insurance documents, old business records and any other documents you need destroyed. 50s Cruise Reunion

WARRENTON – The Lower Columbia Classics Car Club and the Beach Barons Car Club of Ocean Park are holding their Annual ’50s Cruise Reunion Car Show beginning at 8 a.m., on Saturday April 24 at Camp Rilea on the west side of Highway 101, south of Warrenton. The car entry and registration fee is $15. Spectator admission is $2, with the gates opening at 10 a.m. Active members of the military receive free car registration and/or admission with a current military I.D. Salad luncheon & more

NASELLE -On April 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the annual salad luncheon sponsored by the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Knappton Road will be held. The luncheon offers a wide assortment of salads for a donation of $6. Along with the luncheon, a plant, bake and craft sale will begin at 10:30 a.m.  Al Simmuka has more than 500 tomato plants of several varieties he is tending and various other plants will be available.  The Lutheran bakers offer traditional goods including Finnish delicacies such cardamom bread and prune tarts. The craft room holds promise of hand-worked projects along with quilts made at the church. Funds generated from this event will go to support church mission work. 

Salad edibles

SURFSIDE – The Surfside Homeowners Association’s Community Relations Committee is hosting an event called planting containers of salad edibles beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 24 at 31402 “H” Place. Rachel Gana, master gardener from Washington State University will plant these containers. A limited number of starter herbs, vegetables and potting soil will be provided as “freebies.” Come and bring your own beginners to plant or swap, a favorite pot, your trowels and gloves. Smithsonian exhibit

SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall is showing a Smithsonian Museum exhibit titled ‘American Folklife – Commonwealth of Cultures.’ This exhibit will be illustrated with examples of folklife from our local area and will feature local folk art, crafts and food. Bingo!

LONG BEACH – The Elks has bingo every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. The 15-game program includes a Texas blackout and a progressive $250 blackout. Snacks and pull-tabs are available. The public is welcome. Elks bingo proceeds fund the Washington State Tall Elks Therapy program.

4Cast perform

RAYMOND – Sunday Afternoon Live, located at 323 Third Street in Raymond, will bring the popular vocal quartet, 4Cast, back to the stage of the Raymond Theatre at 2 p.m. on April 25. Water Flushing

OCEAN PARK – North Beach Water District will perform preventive water main flushing from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., through Friday, May 7. This action may cause red or cloudy water, which is not harmful to a person’s health but may cause rust stains on light or colored laundry. Please be sure to check the water prior to doing laundry. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point from Tuesday, April 27 through Sunday, May 2, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Tuesday, April 27, 7:25 a.m. -0.7; Wednesday, April 28, 8:12 a.m. -1.0; Thursday, April 29, 8:57 a.m. -1.1; Friday, April 30, 9:41 a.m. -1.0; Saturday, May 1, 10:24 a.m. -0.7; Sunday, May 2, 11:06 a.m. -0.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Weight watchers

Glacial Flood Deposition

CAPE D – The Long Beach Area State Parks are hosting “Is There Evidence for Glacial Flood Deposition on the Continental Margin Seaward of the Columbia River Mouth?” on Friday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m., at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park. ILWACO – WellSpring Community Network is hosting a town hall community meeting on Thursday, May 6 at the Hilltop Auditorium in Ilwaco. Peninsula Garden Party

PENINSULA – Coast Community Radio presents its second annual garden party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, May 8 at the Nahcotta Rhododendron Garden at 28409 Sandridge Road. Admission is free. Visitors touring the garden’s eight acres will see a wide array of natives and ornamentals including rhododendron varieties found nowhere else in the region. Host Herb Mindt together with co-host and licensed landscape architect Bill Jablonsky will be joined by master gardener Ann Goldeen, of Coast Community Radio’s program, “Diggin’ the Dirt.” Willapa Bay oysters donated by Northern Oyster Company will be available fresh from the grill, along with a variety of other foods. Symphonic concert & more

ASTORIA – Larry Johnson will conduct the North Coast Symphonic Band at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 9 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria.  The program will feature music honoring mothers on their special day and mothers in the audience will receive a free carnation as they arrive at the concert venue. Performers include Bob Walters of Ocean Park who will sing “Embraceable You.” The pre-concert entertainment will start at 3:30 p.m. and feature the All That Jazz band, which includes Bob Joiner and Glen Hansen on trombone, Nick Johnson on sax, Dennis Hale on tuba, Chris Jacobson on guitar, Lee Stromquist on keyboard, and Dave Graves on percussion. Regular admission for the May 9 concert is $10. Student admission is $6. Children 12 and under are free when escorted by an adult.  Tickets are available in advance at the Liberty Theater Box Office at 503-325-5922 ext. 55.  The doors will open at 3:15 p.m., the day of the concert. For more information about the band or the concert, e-mail jlbowler@charter.net or call 503-325-2431.

Forestry fun day

ELMA – From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on May 15 a Forestry Fun Day is set at the Satsop Development Park, 100 Technology Lane in Elma. This is a cooperative event between Grays Harbor Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Department of Natural Resources, Grays Harbor College, and the WSU Extension office. Lunch will be provided. Find out what assistance programs might be available for small forest landowners as well as information on a variety of topics related to forest health, wildlife and tree vigor. The event will focus on hands-on teaching and is open to all ages, as activities for youth will be ongoing throughout the day. Youth under age 14 need to be accompanied by an adult.
