Thursday, April 8Transit board meeting

RAYMOND – Pacific Transit System is holding its regular quarterly board meeting at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 8 at the Raymond office, located at 216 N. 2nd Street. During the meeting there will be a public hearing to review the draft of the 6-Year Transit Development Plan for 2010-15 and the 2009 Annual Report. The public is invited to attend and be heard.

Black Lake meeting

ILWACO – The city of Ilwaco’s Black Lake Restoration Project Steering Committee will meet on April 8 at 5:30 p.m. to share and discuss the final draft of a plan to eliminate the weeds in Black Lake. When finalized, the plan will be submitted to the Washington State Department of Ecology for a grant. MH Recovery Event

SEAVIEW – Nationally known advocate and suicide survivor Stephanie Lane and her mother Joyce will speak Thursday, April 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center Social Hall at 5000 “N” Place in Seaview. Sponsored by NAMI Pacific County, their true story of danger, hurt and hope is entitled “A Bi-Polar Bear Lost in the Woods.” Winner of many awards, Stephanie has started a youth advocacy program, managed an office of consumer partnerships for the State of Washington, and now runs a consulting firm called HOPE Consulting and Counseling. Photo Club Shutterbugs

Dinner & auction

OCEAN PARK – The Moose Lodge in Ocean Park is hosting a fundraising dinner, grab bag night along with silent and live auction items on Friday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to Moose members and their guests and proceeds go to the Ocean Park Food Bank. The cost is $8. The meal is a wonderful lemon chicken dinner prepared by Mickey Padgett-Schmale and Donna Simonson.

ILWACO – The Ilwaco St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, located across the street from the Columbia-Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street, is open the second and fourth Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or April 9 and April 23 this month. Anyone that needs food is welcome, no ID required. If possible please bring a container. Smithsonian exhibit

SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall is showing a Smithsonian Museum Exhibit titled ‘American Folklife – Commonwealth of Cultures.’ This exhibit will be illustrated with examples of folklife from our local area and will feature local folk art, crafts and food. The exhibit opens April 10 and runs through May 9. Benefit horse show

LONG BEACH – Beginning at 10:30 a.m., on April 10 the Red Barn Arena at 6409 Sandridge Road in Long Beach is hosting a benefit game show, with proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula. There will be a variety of events including barrels, Idaho figure eight, key race, polo turn and a ride a buck competition as well. Sunday, April 11Willapa Hills’ music

LONG BEACH – On Sunday, April 11, starting at 3 p.m., at the Cranberry Museum at 2907 Pioneer Road in Long Beach, the pubic is invited to come to a concert with the theme, ‘Springers and Springboards,’ which features songs by and about people of the Lower Columbia-Pacific Region, as performed by the band, Willapa Hills and will include original works, as well as their own arrangements of songs by Mary Garvey, Ray Raihala of the Brownsmead Flats. The group will also perform a few traditional folk tunes representative of some of the major immigrant groups to the area. Audience members will be encouraged to participate in some of the numbers.. This group includes musicians Kerry McNalley, Sunrise and Jessica Fletcher, Fern Fey, Jennifer Hannigan and Andrew Emlen, and highlights the guitar, autoharp, banjo, mandolin, cello, Jew’s harp, fiddle, piano and more. There is a suggested $10 donation.

Orchid Society Meeting

ASTORIA – The “Culture of Epiphytes,” presented by orchid enthusiast Greg Nielsen, which features the world of air-loving orchids will be the topic for the Sunset Empire Orchid Society meeting at 2 p.m., on Sunday, April 11 at the Columbia Memorial Hospital east conference room. RAYMOND and LONG BEACH -The public is invited to three free energy symposiums sponsored by the Pacific County PUD. Then on April 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be gatherings at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. An instructor from Centralia Community College will be on hand to discuss topics such as methods of making your home more energy efficient, comfortable and healthy; the most cost effective measures for lowering heating bills; relative costs of heating with wood, propane, electricity, etc.; the potential for renewable energy sources and incentives for conservation measures. Maximizing Harvests

LONG BEACH – Beginning at 6 p.m., on April 13, Ray Millner will lead a class at the Long Beach Grange, 5715 Sandridge Road on harvesting a 12-month garden. Rummage Sale

SEAVIEW – St. Mary’s Alter Society is holding their annual rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, April 16 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 17. This is a fundraiser to help support various charity projects this group is involved with. There will be everything from clothing to collectibles, plants and a bake sale, plus a raffle drawing for a variety of items including framed art by local artists. Lunch is available both days. GRGG Potluck & Speaker

KLIPSAN – Share a Potluck dinner Friday night, April 16, at the Peninsula Senior Center, starting at 5 p.m. The potluck is always a fun place to visit with other volunteers from past cleanups and meet new ones while rolling up garbage bags for the beach cleanup the next day. The speaker that evening will be Teresa DeLorenzo, who will teach us many things we never suspected about local plants and animals, including: sexual habits of slugs, reverence for skunk cabbage, trillium love medicine, why Ursa rules the skies, endangered snags, and the importance of attracting birds, bees and bats. Surely an educational and entertaining program for everyone to enjoy.

OCEAN PARK – The Friends of Ocean Park School are hosting an online auction to raise money for their school. The auction will feature a wide variety of items to include gift certificates to local restaurants and hair salons, seafood, day passes to amusement parks, computer services, hotel and bed and breakfast accommodations, paintings from local artists and baked goods just to name a few. The group is raising money to help fund school field trips, recess equipment and assemblies at Ocean Park School. This training includes modules on disaster preparedness, fire safety, medical operations, disaster psychology, light search and rescue, disaster simulation and much more and is designed to prepare you to help yourself, family, neighbors and others in the event of a disaster. Forestry fun day

ELMA – From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on May 15 a Forestry Fun Day is set at the Satsop Development Park, 100 Technology Lane in Elma. This is a cooperative event between Grays Harbor Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Department of Natural Resources, Grays Harbor College, and the WSU Extension office. Lunch will be provided. Find out what assistance programs might be available for small forest landowners as well as information on a variety of topics related to forest health, wildlife and tree vigor. The event will focus on hands-on teaching and is open to all ages, as activities for youth will be ongoing throughout the day. Youth under age 14 need to be accompanied by an adult. Advanced registration, received by April 30 is $10 per person or $15 per family. Registration at a later date will be $15 per person and $20 per family.
