PENINSULA – If you love fresh, locally-roasted coffee and also love helping kids in our community, then Ilwaco High School senior Alexis Ferguson’s senior project is really going to warm your heart. Ferguson has worked as a barista at Long Beach Coffee Roasters for the past two years. She wanted to expand on her knowledge of coffee-roasting and find a way to raise money for a community group. She selected the Christmas Angel program, which fills requests from needy families for moderately-priced holiday gifts for their children. Long Beach Coffee Roasters is donating the coffee beans, and each one-pound bag sells for $12.50 with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards the Christmas Angels. Pickup will take place all day on Friday, Dec. 10 at Long Beach Coffee Roasters. Limited seats are available for an interesting coffee-tasting event at 6 p.m. that evening, with desserts kindly donated by the Lost Roo, Pelicano and Cottage Bakery. North Coast Chorale
ASTORIA – North Coast Chorale celebrates its 20th anniversary with an annual winter concert titled, “Ghosts of Christmas Past.” Performances are at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center. FORT CLATSOP – On Dec. 12 at 1 p.m., the public is invited to a holiday open house and a presentation by Paul Lanquist entitled, “Artist’s Premiere: Cultural Encounters” in the Netul River Room at 92343 Fort Clatsop Road in Astoria. A noted poster artist, Lanquist’s ability to capture iconic places and people have made him a natural candidate to document historic and contemporary scenes from Lewis and Clark National Historical Park onto several new park posters. You will have a chance to hear Lanquist talk about his work, and his process as an artist at the free ‘In Their Footsteps’ talk and poster signing. Other holiday open house activities Dec. 12 at Fort Clatsop include: the Star Spangled Banner flag raising at the fort at 9:30 a.m.; volley of gunfire flintlock programs at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Christmas 1805 ranger talks about the explorers’ Christmas at the fort, at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. A special night flintlock volley of gunfire follows the 4 p.m. talk; fat rendering and tallow candle making will be continuous from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a demonstration of candle-making at 2:30 p.m.; the Star Spangled Banner retiring of the flag at 3:30 p.m.; ranger-led nature discovery walks on the Netul Trail at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. After visiting the fort, warm up in the Visitor Center with hot apple cider, and participate in hands-on children’s craft and puzzle activities. Wednesday, Dec. 15Remember the Magic
OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Signs proudly presents the fourth edition of the Christmas lights and music program “Remember the Magic” at 29011 “H” Street in Ocean Park. (North of Joe Johns, and south of 295th on the ocean side.) The hour-long program plays three times every night through Dec. 26 starting at 5:30 p.m., and repeating until 8:30 p.m. Christmas Eve will run an additional show and stay on until 9:30 p.m. There are more lights and some new music this year. Listen from your car on our neighborhood broadcast station playing on 89.5 FM. The show is free to all. Donations for the South Pacific County Humane Society are greatly appreciated. Parking is limited, so share the ride with your neighbors, please be courteous with your headlights, and be aware of traffic. Come and watch the lights dance. PACIFIC COUNTY – The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is starting soon. Coastal Community Action Program will open phone lines at 8:30 a.m., Dec. 16 to begin making appointments. Farmers Market volunteers
LONG BEACH – The Columbia-Pacific Farmers’ Market will get off the ground in May 2011. An authentic farmers’ market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. Leadbetter Bird Count
PACIFIC COUNTY – The Leadbetter Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Dec. 18 from dawn to dusk. Sponsored by the Willapa Hills and Discovery Coast Audubon chapters, this is a great opportunity for participants to point out where you see birds and document them with experts.
