Wednesday, Oct. 6Free seminar for parents

SEAVIEW – READY!, a free seminar for parents of children ages 0 to five who are getting ready for kindergarten, will be offered at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 “N” Place in Seaview, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This seminar will provide parents with information about how their child learns, as well as materials and activities that can be used at home to make learning easy and fun. Parents with children up to two years old should come to the workshop on Oct. 6; parents with children ages two to four years old should come to the workshop on Oct. 13; and finally those with children ages four to five years old should come to the workshop on Oct. 20. ILWACO – The AAUW is hosting a candidates/issues forum on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Hilltop Auditorium.  In addition to the candidates for sheriff – John Didion and Scott Johnson; and county commissioner – Lisa Ayers and Cathy Russ – the pros and cons for the following issues will be presented and representatives will respond to your questions:  1098 (tax adjusted gross income over $200,000 individuals and $400,000 couples, reduce property taxes, certain business and occupation taxes and directed increased revenues to education and health); 1100 and 1105  (both closing state liquor stores and licensing private parties to sell and distribute spirits); 1107 (end taxes on candy, end temporary excise taxes on carbonated beverages and some bottled water and reduce tax rates for certain food processors); and R-52 (authorizes bonds to finance construction and repair projects increasing energy efficiency in public schools and continues the sales tax on bottled water due to expire in 2013).

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association invites you to their 40th Annual Fall Art Show and Sale opening Friday, Oct. 8 and running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Monday, Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum, 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Artists compete for awards in 23 categories; the show’s Featured Artist is Lonnie Acord, winner of Spring 2010’s Judges’ Choice – Best in Show. Inspired Creations shopping experience provides same day art inspired purchase options and is a great way to kick off holiday gift shopping. Visitors to the show are invited to vote for the People’s Choice winner and donated art will be raffled to support PAA’s high school graduate scholarship. The drawing for Eric Wiegardt’s original painting, “San Juan Reflections,” occurs at 2 p.m., Oct. 10. Tickets for this special raffle are currently on sale at www.beachartist.org. In addition, a silent auction of framed, original watercolors by past PAA member Marcia Rockwell will be open through the first three days of the show. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, pending final marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 8, 8:49 p.m. -1.3 and Saturday, Oct. 9, 9:35 p.m. -1.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

PENINSULA – Peninsula Arts Association presents artwork for October. Marilyn Casey’s coastal paintings are being shown at the Ocean Beach Hospital. Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek are showing their varied paintings at the Pacific County building on Sandridge. Elizabeth Bonn-Zimmerman is showing her paintings at the Ilwaco library. PAA hopes that you will take time to admire this artwork.

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Timberland Regional Library Foundation (TRLF) and the Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring their first Scrabble-Thon competition. Boating safety class

ILWACO – There will be a boating safety class talk by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the upstairs classroom at the Port of Ilwaco office at 165 Howerton Way in Ilwaco. Cranberrian Fair

PENINSULA – A celebration of local harvest including all things cranberry will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Oct 9 and Oct. 10. Foods, crafters, bog tours and more will be part of the Annual Cranberrian Fair. Collectible Cranberrian Fair buttons are $5 each and cover admission to all events at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Snacks and lunch can be purchased from Beach House Catering from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you are sure to enjoy jazz, classical and just plain fun music by local pianist Tom Trudell. The Cranberry Trolley runs on the hour from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum to the Cranberry Museum from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Literacy Tutor Training

ASTORIA – A volunteer literacy tutor training will be held at Clatsop Community College in Towler Hall, room 208, on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program works with hard-to-serve adult students who must overcome many barriers to improved literacy. The training will discuss the “ecology of language acquisition,” strategies to elicit vocabulary from English language learners drawn from Guided Language Acquisition Design training and how tutors can self-monitor their performance with the help of a simple rubric. This workshop is open to anyone interested, for practicing tutors and for those considering becoming a volunteer with the literacy program. 100th anniversary celebration

SOUTH BEND – The Willapa Harbor Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the building of the Pacific County Courthouse in South Bend. There are several weekend packages available that feature tours of local museums, courthouse tours, a celebration ceremony, followed by a concert by the talented Navy Band Northwest . On Saturday, Oct. 9, courthouse tours will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, the celebration in the courthouse rotunda is at 1 p.m., and the Navy band concert is at 3 p.m., in the South Bend gym. In addition the special event, “A Night of Living History,” will be held that evening, with the social hour starting at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the program including performances by Scott Cowell and Bryan Harrison among others. LONG BEACH – Beginning at 7 p.m., Oct. 11 in the PUD auditorium on Sandridge Road, the public is invited to come to a slideshow presented by members Swede and Carole Warneke. This 43-minute show is a potpourri of flora, fauna and facilities in Panama, with many bird photographs, including pictures of Southern Lapwing, Snail Kite, Black Vulture, Green Honeycreeper, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Collared Aricari, Keel-billed Toucan, Yellow-headed Caracara, Three-wattled Bellbird, Green Violet-ear Hummingbird, White-necked Jacobin, White-whiskered Puffbird, and many more. Water Music Festival

PENINSULA – The Water Music Festival is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality music to the Lower Columbia River Region. Oct. 15 through Oct. 17 the Water Music Festival XXVI provides “Romance with Music – from Baroque to Ballads and Beyond” and features a top-rated chamber ensemble, a classical pianist noted for her artistry and connection with her audiences, and for her performance of works of romantic composers, a big-band vocalist, a noteworthy Seattle-area jazz trio, a talented chamber duo from Astoria, and outstanding local young artists. Hospice memorial

Classical pianist

ILWACO – Classical pianist Tien Hsieh, described as a “serious, composed, tiny and full of music,” will display her artistry at the piano at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Hilltop Auditorium. Hsieh is acclaimed for electrifying performances of heroically-difficult selections and her Saturday evening performance promises a warmth and freshness of ideas to delight her audience. Container Edibles

SURFSIDE – The Community Relations Committee of the Surfside Homeowners Association is sponsoring a planting event entitled: Wintertime Container Edibles: Herbs, Garlic and More, which will happen rain or shine, beginning at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 on the Surfside grounds at 31402 H Street. Surfside gardener Ann Thoreson, will be planting at least one container to be raffled off. There will be handouts and other giveaway goodies afterwards. Admission is free, but bring your own pots. Girls Circle

LONG BEACH – Are you in the fifth or sixth grade? Are you a girl? If you answered yes to both of these questions, the Girls Circle program is for you! Join other girls your age in an exciting new program that will be fun and exciting. You can take part in this eight-week program that runs Oct. 18 through Dec. 10, and meets every Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Long Beach Elementary School. Enrollment is limited. ILWACO – The American Legion’s 23rd Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. People who protect our safety on the Columbia Coast and Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at the ceremony.
