ILWACO – The Long Beach Peninsula Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is holding their sixth annual dinner and auction on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Eagles Nest Resort at 700 W. North Head Road. Bunco for cancer

ASTORIA – A Bunco fundraising event for breast cancer is set for Oct. 1 at the Elks Club in Astoria.  No experience is needed – just great fun to be had by all!  Bring your friends and teach them how to play.  Doors open at 6 p.m., the game starts at 7 p.m.  There will be raffles and prizes. Art Around Town

PENINSULA – Peninsula Arts Association presents artwork for the months of September and October. Marilyn Casey’s coastal paintings are being shown at the Ocean Beach Hospital. Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek are showing their varied paintings at the Pacific County building on Sandridge. Elizabeth Bonn-Zimmerman is showing her paintings at the Ilwaco library. OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW – Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. Saturday, Oct. 2Willapa Grange Reactivation

RAYMOND – On Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m., at the Willapa Valley Grange located at Camp 1 Road in Raymond, community members in the Raymond, South Bend and Willapa Valley area are convening to discuss the possibility of reactivating the Willapa Valley Grange. Members from the Washington Grange Association will be on hand to answer questions. Various members of the community have already taken time to begin clean up work of the building. Oktoberfest dinner

LONG BEACH – Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road is hosting an outstanding dinner with bratwurst and the works from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Oct. 2. Oktoberfest

FRANCES – Lewis Pacific Swiss Society will be hosting their 41st annual Oktoberfest, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Swiss Park in Frances. European nine pin bowling kicks off at 9 a.m. First perfect score of 27 wins $500. Amateur horseshoe tournament begins at noon along with the registration for the pinochle tournament that starts at 1 p.m. Crafts, vendors and a bake sale start at 10 a.m. There is no fee for showcasing your business or craft. Red Hats auction

OCEAN PARK – Cranberry Red Hats are having their annual auction at the Ocean Park fire house on Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park beginning at noon on Saturday, Oct. 2. Come and bring finger foods, donated items or just come to bid. There will also be door prizes. Proceeds go to the food bank and the Red Hats Thanksgiving dinner in November.

Pianist & recording artist

LONG BEACH – Calvin Taylor, a world-class pianist and recording artist is making a rare appearance at the Seventh-day Adventist Church at 2707 Pacific Avenue North, at 11 a.m. and again at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2. He will perform a variety beloved hymns, well-known spirituals and classical sacred music. There is no charge and everyone is welcome.

Refuge volunteer day

ILWACO – The last volunteer day at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will be held at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the refuge headquarters at Highway 101, milepost 24.5. Work will include maintenance on the Cutthroat Climb and Teal Slough trails to rebuild some sagging steps to withstand the coming winter rains, and the Teal Slough trail urgently needs signage to be installed to avoid confusion on the path’s direction. Blessing of the Pets

CHINOOK – In recognition of St. Francis and his festival day, a special blessing of the pets will take place beginning at 2 p.m., on Oct. 3 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook. Pets of all types and their owners are invited to this special service in the church parking lot at 767 SR-101. Living history event

CHINOOK – The Chinook Nation is hosting a fur trade re-enactment from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3, featuring more than 40 Chinookan paddlers, multiple canoes and two tall ships, the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftian. Multiple locations at Fort Columbia State Park provide good views of the lower Columbia River where the Chinookan paddlers will meet and trade with crewmembers from the tall ships. Tribal and state park interpreters will be on hand near the restored theater at the park’s entrance to orient visitors to the trade re-enactment. The public is encouraged to come view this wonderful event and learn more about our native people.

Great Columbia Crossing

MEGLER – The 29th Annual Great Columbia Crossing 10K run/walk is set for Oct. 3 beginning at 9 a.m. Parking is set up at the Port of Astoria or the Port of Chinook, with shuttle buses leaving Astoria every 20 minutes starting at 7 a.m., and departing the Port of Chinook at 7 a.m. Registration is limited to 3,000 participants. Register online at www.greatcolumbiacrossing.com until Sept. 29 or at the Astoria Warrenton Chamber from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Oct. 2. There will be no day of race registrations. Monday, Oct. 4Flu Shots

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Pacific County Health Department is offering seasonal flu shots by appointment only for adults at both health department sites in Long Beach and South Bend. Shots will be offered in Long Beach from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on Oct. 4. Please call to make an appointment by calling 642-9349. The cost is $25, and Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. The CDC and public health officials recommend that everyone over the age of six months be vaccinated against the flu. This year the seasonal flu shot will protect you against H1N1, as well as other flu viruses that are beginning to circulate. Please contact your private provider to discuss getting your child vaccinated. Yearly flu vaccination should begin as soon as vaccine is available and continue throughout the influenza season, into December, January and beyond.

AARP meeting

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Timberland Regional Library Foundation (TRLF) and the Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring their first Scrabble-Thon competition. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 1. Local competitions will be held Oct. 9, at a Timberland Regional Library. Art Show

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association invites you to their 40th Annual Fall Art Show and Sale opening Friday, Oct. 8 and running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Monday, Oct. 11 at the World Kite Museum, 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Artists compete for awards in 23 categories; the show’s Featured Artist is Lonnie Acord, winner of Spring 2010’s Judges’ Choice – Best in Show. Inspired Creations shopping experience provides same day art inspired purchase options and is a great way to kick off holiday gift shopping. Visitors to the show are invited to vote for the People’s Choice winner and donated art will be raffled to support PAA’s high school graduate scholarship. The drawing for Eric Wiegardt’s original painting, “San Juan Reflections,” occurs at 2 p.m., Oct. 10. Tickets for this special raffle are currently on sale at www.beachartist.org. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, pending final marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 8, 8:49 p.m. -1.3 and Saturday, Oct. 9, 9:35 p.m. -1.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Boating safety class

ILWACO – There will be a boating safety class talk by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the upstairs classroom at the Port of Ilwaco office at 165 Howerton Way in Ilwaco. The cost is $25 and pre-registration is requested. The class will assist participants in getting a Washington state Boater Safety card. Cranberrian Fair

PENINSULA – A celebration of local harvest including all things cranberry will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Oct 9 and Oct. 10. Foods, crafters, bog tours and more will be part of the 90th Annual Cranberrian Fair. Collectible Cranberrian Fair buttons are $5 each and cover admission to all events at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Snacks and lunch can be purchased from Beach House Catering from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you are sure to enjoy jazz, classical and just plain fun music by local pianist Tom Trudell. The Cranberry Trolley runs on the hour from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum to the Cranberry Museum from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Space is limited and seating is on a first come first served basis. Plus you can head to the Port of Ilwaco and get a bite of cranberry goodness at participating businesses just for wearing your Cranberrian Fair entrance badge.

Literacy Tutor Training

ASTORIA – A volunteer literacy tutor training will be held at Clatsop Community College in Towler Hall, room 208, on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program works with hard-to-serve adult students who must overcome many barriers to improved literacy. This workshop is open to anyone interested, for practicing tutors and for those considering becoming a volunteer with the literacy program. Corn feed

BROWNSMEAD – The Brownsmead Corn Feed is Saturday, Oct. 9, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. A complete ham dinner is provided with mashed potatoes, applesauce, bread and butter, milk, ice cream bars and all the wonderful corn you can eat! 100th anniversary celebration

SOUTH BEND – The Willapa Harbor Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the building of the Pacific County courthouse in South Bend. There are several weekend packages available that feature tours of local museums, courthouse tours, a celebration ceremony, followed by a concert by the talented Navy Band Northwest. On Saturday, Oct. 9, courthouse tours will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, the celebration in the courthouse rotunda is at 1 p.m., and the Navy band concert is at 3 p.m., in the South Bend gym. In addition the special event “A Night of Living History” will be held that evening, with the social hour starting at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the program including performances by Scott Cowell and Bryan Harrison among others. Tree farm management

CHEHALIS – On Oct. 9, the Washington Tree Farm Program will sponsor a day-long Forestry Educational Seminar, “Seedling Management and Economics for the Tree Farm” at is the Veterans Memorial Museum, 100 SW Veterans Way in Chehalis. A diverse range of topics should provide something of interest to small forestland owners, foresters, and loggers. Subjects covered will include: Three basic herbicides and application procedures; Cedar, Valley Ponderosa pine and Alder; Financial consequences of stand management decisions; Forestland investment, and Log market outlook. Transit board meeting

Water Music Festival

PENINSULA – The Water Music Festival is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality music to the Lower Columbia River Region. Oct. 15 through Oct. 17, the Water Music Festival XXVI provides “Romance with Music – from Baroque to Ballads and Beyond” and features a top-rated chamber ensemble; a classical pianist noted for her artistry and connection with her audiences and her performance of works by romantic composers; a big-band vocalist; a noteworthy Seattle-area jazz trio; a talented chamber duo from Astoria; and outstanding local young artists. Hospice memorial

OCEAN PARK – On Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church, Hospice will host a memorial service for those who have lost someone special. Everyone is welcome to attend this healing service.

Magic flutes

ILWACO – At 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15, “Mozart’s Magic Flutes,” an outstanding chamber ensemble from Eugene, will perform at Hilltop Auditorium. Baroque, Ballads and Beyond

ILWACO – The 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 free concert at the Inn at Harbour Village in Ilwaco will feature young local talent and a noteworthy jazz trio from Port Townsend – the Chuck Easton Trio. Featured local young artists performing are August Davenport, Brooke Flood, Brier Gregory, Dane Gregory and Anja Patten. The Chuck Easton Trio then offers something for everyone, with a mix of ballads, blues, jazz and beyond. The beyond part of the free program features guitarist Chuck Easton switching to his tuba and keyboardist George Radebaugh indulging the audience with some accordion favorites. Unique music duo

OYSTERVILLE – The Reynolds and Emlen Duo draws upon a vast range of musical experiences to present a unique performance on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Oysterville Church. Their repertoire encompasses favorite Baroque and classical music for violin and cello, including Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Bartok, and some modern Romanian Gypsy selections. Their performances are marked with light-hearted presentations, authentic costumes and stories, and energy and sensitivity. Young artist Brooke Flood will open the 2 p.m. program. Classical pianist

ILWACO – Classical pianist Tien Hsieh, described as a “serious, composed, tiny and full of music,” will display her artistry at the piano at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Hilltop Auditorium. Hsieh is acclaimed for electrifying performances of heroically-difficult selections and her Saturday evening performance promises a warmth and freshness of ideas to delight her audience. American Songbooks

ILWACO – The Barbara Blair Quartet presents an afternoon of feel-good classic melodies from the American Songbooks beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17, at Hilltop Auditorium. Pumpkin patch/harvest festival

LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach is hosting their first great pumpkin patch and harvest festival from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 in the Funland field behind the Long Beach Police station. The festival includes a costume contest, pumpkin patch for kids 12 years old and younger, hot apple cider, trick or treating at participating Long Beach merchants, walking the plank with the Beards Hollow Pirates and much more.
