ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, will be the site of a monthly Authors’ Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for July 28. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Tidepool Splash

OCEAN PARK and NASELLE – From 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Ocean Park Timberland Libray and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Naselle Timberland Library on July 28 all ages will have the opportunity to learn about tidepools and all the creatures living there. LONG BEACH – The 4th Annual Jake the Alligator Man’s 75th Birthday Party weekend kicks off on July 30 with a bachelor party for Jake at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. The party includes a burlesque show with the Emerald Dollies from Seattle and the Rose City Shimmy from Portland. On July 31, there will be a car show in downtown Long Beach, with live rockabilly music by the bands Drag Strip Riot, East Side Speed Machine and Angie and the Car Wrecks. Chronic disease mgmt

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held July 30, Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. Saturday, July 31GPS class

ASTORIA – A GPS (Global Positioning System) class will be taught Saturday, July 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at Englund Marine and Industrial Supply located at 95 Hamburg in Astoria. Attending this basic GPS class costs $30, which includes the class manual. The class will be limited to 20 participants, due to the extensive hands-on nature and content of the class, and knowledgeable instructors from Englund Marine and Industrial Supply and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 64 will teach it. Everyone attending the class is requested to bring their personal GPS with them, if they have one. I.H.S. car washes

LONG BEACH – The Ilwaco High School Band needs your help with raising money for a trip later this year. Nature activities

FORT COLUMBIA – This summer Fort Columbia will have family and youth nature activities each weekend from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will be held in the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center. These are short, fun activities and crafts that are designed for a variety of age groups. On Saturday, July 31 the focus is, “How old is that tree?” Attendees will learn how to determine the health, age and environment of a tree by looking at tree rings. On Sunday, Aug. 1 the focus is, “Fur Feaver.” During this session those attending will discover how animals stay warm and how their fur helps them blend into nature.

Volunteers to filet tuna

LONG BEACH – His Supper Table needs help to clean and filet 80 tuna being donated to H.S.T. by the Oregon Tuna Classic. All fish are caught by local fishermen. The tuna will be processed from 4 p.m. until dark on July 31 and from 9 a.m. until dark on Aug. 1. It will be frozen and used for clients in need in Pacific County. SummerFest events

LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. Kids of all ages are sure to enjoy balloon artists Pockets the clown and friend in the gazebo. Plus kid’s crafts will be offered from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 1. Come downtown and have some fun.

OYSTERVILLE – Vesper Services is set for 3 p.m., Aug. 1 in the wonderful Oysterville Church. Pastor David George from New Life Church in Ilwaco will officiate. Music will be provided by Celtic harpist Kathleen Staub. Jeanne Bellinger will be the organist for this service. Summer on the Columbia

VANCOUVER – The Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership is celebrating summer and the Columbia River with a picnic from noon to 4 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 1 at Frenchman’s Bar Park, 9612 NW Lower River Park Road, Vancouver. This is a unique opportunity for the whole family to paddle and race in the estuary partnership’s 34-foot, birch bark-style canoes, which seat 18 people. Food, drinks and fun will be provided. Monday, Aug. 2Hunter Education Program

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department, along with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, is conducting its annual basic hunter education program from Aug. 2 through Aug. 7. Class size is limited to 30 students and you must register before the class to attend. To register, contact Chief Flint R. Wright at 642-2911. The class is paid for by hunters and sportsmen from all across the state of Washington, so there is no charge for students to attend.

Play Auditions

ILWACO – On Aug. 2 and Aug. 3, the Peninsula Players will hold open auditions at 7:30 p.m. at the 2nd Story Playhouse, 108 Spruce Street E in Ilwaco (above Lupita’s) for the radio play, “A Man with Bogart’s Face” to be performed on Sept. 17 through Sept. 19 and Sept. 24 through Sept. 26. Cast needs include 10 men and four women. In addition, auditions will be held for Steven King’s “Misery,” a play for mature audiences, to be performed in October. Misery needs one man and one woman.

OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Timberland Library presents “Your Schedule, Your Program,” for teens. Drop by the library in August for a program-in-a-box. LONG BEACH – The 2010 Washington State International Kite Festival poster is available for purchase at the World Kite Museum, Campiche Studios and at the Picture Attic, all in Long Beach. This year’s poster is by local artist Pat Fagerland. The cost is $45.

Weight watchers

Charles Mulvey display

ILWACO – From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Aug. 6, Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, “Charles Mulvey: Northwest Master.” This exhibition is retrospective of watercolor paintings by the renowned northwest artist Charles Mulvey (1918-2001). Mulvey was a dedicated teacher and chronicler of the Long Beach Peninsula landscape. His paintings were collected by locals and tourists and he is represented in collections throughout the west. There will be more than 70 of his pieces of art on display. The exhibition will continue until Oct. 10. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free on Thursdays thanks to the sponsorship of the Ilwaco Merchants Association.

ENCORE meeting

CULLABY LAKE – ENCORE, the association of retirement-aged people who share a love of learning, will meet from noon to 4 p.m., Aug. 6 at Cullaby Lake County Park at 89990 Hawkins Road near Astoria. Big Band Concert

ASTORIA – On Saturday Aug. 7, the North Coast Big Band will perform a swing concert at Clatsop Community Performing Arts Center, at 16th and Franklin in Astoria, beginning at 7 p.m. The program features music by band member David Robertson, as well as Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and many other big band favorites. Admission is $10. The band is composed of five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, vocalist, piano, bass, drums and guitar. Fast Art at the Point

LEADBETTER – Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge invite folks to a ‘look at nature and do art’ walk starting at 9 a.m., Aug. 7 at Leadbetter Point National Wildlife Refuge. Walkers will head north along the bayside beach to the south end of the large salt marsh and back. You may use any art form, with 15 minutes at each scene, including set up. Sketching with pencil, charcoal or pastel sticks is recommended. Park in the north parking lot (at the end of the road). This hike will be cancelled by wet, windy weather.

Aglow fellowship

Edible gardens

PENINSULA – From noon to 5 p.m., on Aug. 8, there will be an edible gardening tour at eight locations on the Peninsula. The tour features local food gardens growing a variety of different foods. Tickets are available at the Planter Box in Long Beach and at Adelaide’s in Ocean Park. Tickets are $7 for adults (or five cans of food); $5 for seniors (or bring three cans of food); children are admitted free. Proceeds go to benefit the local food banks and His Supper Table. Agricultural Incentives

SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program is Aug. 13. The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices. IHS reunion

ILWACO – The next all-school reunion is coming Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Ilwaco High School football practice field. Come early and stay late. There will be a variety of activities, and as usual the Ilwaco Sports Booster food trailer will be on site with food for sale. Classes are encouraged to make class banners or signs. Kite buggy demos

LONG BEACH – Two hours before and two hours after low tide, Aug. 14 through Aug. 16, buggy riders will demonstrate the fun and safety of kite power. These demonstrations are in preparation for a possible change in state law to allow wind-powered vehicles on specific Washington beaches. Come check it out!

LONG BEACH – The next Washington State International Kite Festival is Monday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 22. Monday’s focus is kite trains, arches and multi-line stacks; Tuesday is Terrific Tuesday with camera workshops, club camps, Rokkaku battles, pun fun and more; Wednesday is ‘Paint me Patriotic’ with children’s events, senior fighter kite challenges, and lots more; Thursday is handcrafted kite day, Friday’s focus is on demos, mass ascension, the lighted night fly which includes fireworks and more; Saturday’s focus is the recognition ceremony; and Sunday is the family fun fly. Wahkiakum fair

SKAMOKAWA – The 102nd Annual Wahkiakum County Fair is Aug. 19 through Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The theme is “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams.” There will be a variety of 4-H activities and livestock shows, lumberjack exhibitions, several top musical performers, a reptile show, salmon barbecue and the amusement rides. The fair is held at 16 Fairgrounds Road in Skamokawa. Come on down!

PC Fair

MENLO – The Pacific County Fair is coming Aug. 25 through Aug. 28. This year’s theme is “Get your kicks on Highway 6.” Special events include the idol talent show, holiday greeting card contest, jump rope contest, carnival, animal and floral entries and more. Pacific Transit has special runs and prices to and from the fairgrounds.

Wines from Down Under

SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on Sept. 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Skamokawa Grange, next to the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds. Rod Stockhouse again will be the auctioneer. Tickets for this Friends of Skamokawa community event are $15 per person, and include wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina for you to taste. Fresh and light treats will compliment your wine choices. There will also be beer and non-alcoholic beverages available at this event and there will be a table for desserts and coffee.
