Wednesday, July 21Camp Victory volunteers

SEAVIEW – July 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 “N” Place in Seaview, there will be an informational meeting about the opportunity for adults to volunteer at Camp Victory. This camp is for girls in Pacific and Grays Harbor counties between the ages of five and 18, who are survivors of sexual abuse. Adult volunteers are needed to share camp activities and fun in a safe, supportive setting. Volunteers receive 30 to 40 hours of training in sexual abuse prevention, child development, communication skills and camp activities. Plus angels who serve as kitchen and clean-up crews are also needed. All adults are screened and criminal histories and references are checked. Sustainable salmon meeting

ABERDEEN – A regional meeting of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership (WCSSP) is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Wednesday, July 21 at the Port of Grays Harbor, 111 S. Wooding in Aberdeen. WCSSP is the newest of seven regional salmon recovery organizations in Washington, covering all river basins between Cape Flattery and Cape Disappointment that flow directly into the Pacific Ocean. The goals of WCSSP include facilitating a holistic view of the coast region; developing a regional plan to increase and coordinate salmon recovery and protection; supporting the functions of the four lead entity groups through which projects are developed, reviewed and funded; advocating for regional policies and partnerships; and seeking funding from additional sources. Diabetes support

ILWACO – On July 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the public is encouraged to attend a Diabetes Support Group at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, in the second floor conference room. The topic is ‘Activities for Fitness.’ Attendees will learn what to do to increase endurance, flexibility and strength. Be sure to wear appropriate attire for movement. Thursday, July 22Mulvey @ the Museum

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is organizing an exhibition of original paintings by Charles Mulvey, a talented watercolorist and beloved local figure on the Peninsula whose work gained wide respect throughout the Northwest. The museum is working with the Mulvey estate and local private collectors to mount a retrospective view of his work. If you have an original watercolor and would like to loan it to the exhibition, to be on view from Aug. 6 through Oct. 10, please bring it to the museum on Thursday, July 22 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Collections Manager Barbara Minard and Director Betsy Millard will be available to look at works and gather information. The exhibition opening will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

LONG BEACH – An issues forum, sponsored by AAUW, will be held on Friday, July 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Super 8 Motel in Long Beach. This forum will be an opportunity to hear from your candidates for local office. The format will include a question and answer period. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is a non-political organization dedicated to education. This is a non-partisan event. Natalie Hanson will be the moderator for the program. FinnFest

NASELLE – The bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival is coming to Naselle July 23 through July 25 on the grounds of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School. The festival opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, with various cultural programs including an amazing documentary on the history of Estonia. On Saturday there is the Paavo Nurmi Run at 8 a.m., then the official opening ceremonies and a variety of musical presentations, performers and dancers throughout the day. Plus you don’t want to miss the maypole dancers, the wife carry and the boot toss event, and all of the various booths with a wide variety of Finnish items. Summer Art Festival

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association’s Summer Art Festival is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., July 23; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 24 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 25 at the Edgewater Inn (located on the Sid Snyder beach approach) in Long Beach. Always a favorite with locals and visitors, 18 PAA artists fill the space with handmade, artist inspired wares. Pottery, glass, jewelry, paintings, art cards and photography are just some of the mediums represented. Also available for sale are limited edition prints of this year’s Garlic Festival Poster, ‘Sea Going Garlic,’ by Carol Olson as well as raffle tickets to win an Eric Wiegardt original painting! Chronic disease mgmt

ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held July 23 and July 30, and Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. Saturday, July 24LB Rodeo

LONG BEACH – The 65th annual NPRA Long Beach Rodeo is coming July 24 and July 25 at the rodeo grounds on Sandridge Road. Events start off with a rodeo parade on Friday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m., in downtown Long Beach. There will be a cowboy breakfast both days at the clubhouse from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Rodeo action starts at 1 p.m. both days. Saturday night after the rodeo, family night starts. Rodeo dance

LONG BEACH – Northwest Trail Riders Association is holding a rodeo dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., July 24 at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, featuring music by The Toys. Waikiki Beach concert

ILWACO – At 2 p.m., on July 24, the public is invited to Cape Disappointment State Park’s Waikiki Beach for a concert by the band Double J and the Boys. This group from the Long Beach Peninsula makes us proud with their old timey pickin’ and grinin’. Walking Volunteers Needed!

PACIFIC COUNTY -University of Washington grad student Jeana Wiser will be on the Long Beach Peninsula through July 24 to ground-truth work for the joint Pacific County, Washington state, and University of Washington Vertical Evacuation project. Wiser will be looking at four communities: Long Beach, Ocean Park/North Peninsula, Ilwaco/Seaview and Tokeland/North Cove. For each community she intends to examine in detail each of the proposed vertical evacuation sites, current assembly areas, and areas where walking routes could be reinforced to provide easy access to high ground. Also, volunteers from the community are needed to walk routes from their house/workplace to one of the proposed vertical evacuation sites, high ground or current assembly areas. Each walking volunteer will be asked to provide the following information: 1) address of starting point; 2) address of ending point; 3) walking speed (slower than average, average, faster than average); 4) age (18 and younger, 19 to 30, 31 to 50, 50 to 65, 65 and over); and 5) time it took to complete the walk. Nature activities

FORT COLUMBIA – This summer Fort Columbia will have family and youth nature activities each weekend from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will be held in the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center. These are short, fun activities and crafts that are designed for a variety of age groups. On Saturday, July 24 the focus will be on animal tracks and learning how to identify regional animal tracks. On Sunday, July 25 the topic is salmon and discovering the lifecycle of the salmon plus making a bracelet that represents that cycle.

SummerFest events

LONG BEACH – SummerFest events are happening in downtown Long Beach. There will be free horse and wagon rides and face painting from noon to 4 p.m. Music by the Freckled Brown Band can be enjoyed at Lewis and Clark square in downtown Long Beach from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Come downtown and have some fun.

OYSTERVILLE – Vesper Services is set for 3 p.m., July 25 in the wonderful Oysterville Church. Pastor DeWayne LaPoint of the Peninsula Assembly of God/Family Worship Center, will officiate. Music will be provided by Lyrica, a ladies choral ensemble from Puget Sound under the direction of LeeAnne Campos. Bonnie Masson will be the organist for this service. This is a warm, wonderful, welcoming, casual, come as you are event and everyone is welcome.

ROSBURG – Grays River Grange No. 124 is sponsoring a candidate forum starting at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, July 27 at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School on SR-4 across from the Rosburg Store). ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, will be the site of a monthly Authors’ Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for July 28. GPS class

ASTORIA – A GPS (Global Positioning System) class will be taught Saturday, July 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at Englund Marine and Industrial Supply located at 95 Hamburg in Astoria. Attending this basic GPS class costs $30, which includes the class manual. The class will be limited to 20 participants, due to the extensive hands-on nature and content of the class, and knowledgeable instructors from Englund Marine and Industrial Supply and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 64 will teach it. Everyone attending the class is requested to bring their personal GPS with them, if they have one. Summer on the Columbia

VANCOUVER – The Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership is celebrating summer and the Columbia River with a picnic from noon to 4 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 1 at Frenchman’s Bar Park, 9612 NW Lower River Park Road, Vancouver. This is a unique opportunity for the whole family to paddle and race in the estuary partnership’s 34-foot birch bark-style canoes, which seat 18 people. Hunter Education Program

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department, along with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, is conducting its annual basic hunter education program from Aug. 2 through Aug. 7. Class size is limited to 30 students and you must register before the class to attend. To register, contact Chief Flint R. Wright at 642-2911. The class is paid for by hunters and sportsmen from all across the state of Washington, so there is no charge for students to attend.

ENCORE meeting

CULLABY LAKE – ENCORE, the association of retirement-aged people who share a love of learning, will meet from noon to 4 p.m., Aug. 6 at Cullaby Lake County Park at 89990 Hawkins Road near Astoria. Attendees should look for the ENCORE sign for the north pavilion. The cost is $3 per car, but carpools are available. This is a potluck luncheon; so bring a favorite dish to share. Big Band Concert

ASTORIA – On Saturday, Aug. 7, the North Coast Big Band will perform a swing concert at Clatsop Community Performing Arts Center, at 16th and Franklin, in Astoria, beginning at 7 p.m. The program features music by band member David Robertson, as well as Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and many other big band favorites. Admission is $10. The band is composed of five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, vocalist, piano, bass, drums and guitar. Edible gardens

PENINSULA – From noon to 5 p.m., on Aug. 8, there will be an edible gardening tour at seven locations on the Peninsula. The tour features local food gardens growing a variety of different foods. Agricultural Incentives

SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program is Aug. 13. The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices. Kite buggy demos

LONG BEACH – Two hours before and after low tide, from Aug. 14 through Aug. 16, buggy riders will demonstrate the fun and safety of kite power. These demonstrations are in preparation for a possible change in state law to allow wind-powered vehicles on specific Washington beaches. Come check it out!
