Old-time music

OCEAN PARK and NASELLE – On July 7 from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., in Ocean Park and then 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., in Naselle, all ages are invited to the old-time music show, where Rick Meyers blends history and humor and demonstrates how to make music with pioneer folk instruments and household items such as a saw, spoons, mouth harp, limberjack, washboard and tub, banjo, guitar, autoharp and ukulele. Book signing

ILWACO – On Thursday, July 8 the Port of Ilwaco’s Art Walk will benefit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. In addition 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Time Enough Books at the Port of Ilwaco is hosting a special book signing of “River of Promise: Lewis and Clark on the Columbia” by David Nicandri, the most detailed account of the portion of the journey in which Lewis and Clark encountered American Indians in large numbers. This event is free. Books will be available for purchase and all proceeds will benefit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Time Enough Books is located on the waterfront at the Port of Ilwaco at 157 Howerton Way.

RAYMOND -‘Fun with Pharaohs,’ is the theme for all ages from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., July 8 at Raymond Timberland Library. 4-H Camp

ILWACO – Youth who just completed grades four through seven are invited to a 4-H summer slumber camp at Cape Disappointment State Park. This is a two-day camp that starts at 6 p.m., on Thursday, July 8 and ends at 9 a.m., on Saturday, July 10. The registration fee, which includes a T-shirt, is $55. Refuge walk with art

OYSTERVILLE – The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge invite artists to a living history and nature walk entitled, “A walk back in time and fast art with nature” set for July 10. This event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oysterville Schoolhouse. The walk will be to different sites in Oysterville where the group leader will have participants focus on seven different scenes. Any art form is welcome. A map and description of historic sites will be provided. The walk is free to members of the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, and $20 per person for non-members. Blackberry Bushes

NASELLE – The Waikkiki Beach Concert Series continues with a free performance at Cape Disappointment State Park at 2 p.m. on July 10 by The Blackberry Bushes Stringband. The Blackberry Bushes are an acoustic stringband of four prolific songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. Their music is progressive Americana “like someone threw a radio from yesteryear high into the treetops.” Their repertoire of original, bluegrass and traditionally twisted music is infused with their love of indie, jazz, punk and alternative styles. Exhibit continued

SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall extended of their current exhibit – Columbia River Reflection by painter Rachael Wolford. She has a striking collection of oil paintings she has done showing the length of the Columbian River with a narrative of the geography and history of the river following the paintings. The exhibit will be extended to July 18. This has been a popular exhibit so they are giving it another week of exposure. Redmen Hall is located in beautiful downtown Skamokawa in an historical schoolhouse building, with a permanent exhibit about the local history of the lower Columbia River Basin, a beautiful gift shop, and a well-rounded bookstore. Marine Biology camp

CHINOOK – Washington State Parks and Grays Harbor College are hosting an oceanography and marine biology day camp at Fort Columbia State Park for youth in grades six through eight. The camp is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 14, and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 16; with a family potluck from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Attendees will explore the concepts of oceanography and marine biology through scientific investigations, hiking, drawing, journaling and games. The cost is $25 and includes snacks and a T-shirt. Summer Art Camp

ASTORIA – The 4-H Club is offering a summer art camp from July 19 through July 23 at the 4-H clubhouse by the Clatsop County fairgrounds. This camp is open to all youth, not just 4-H members. Morning classes are for youth seven to 12 years old, and afternoon classes are for those over 13. Activities include: drawing and painting, three dimensional art, stamp art, creating a personal flag, and more! The cost of the camp is $60 for the first child, $30 for a sibling, $45 for foster children, and drop-in for a day at a time will be $15 a day. Registration is due by July 12 or until filled. Wednesday, July 14Shoalwater Birders

OCEAN PARK – The Shoalwater Birders’ quarterly meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Ocean Park library at 1308 256th Street. The speaker is biologist Teresa DeLorenzo, a founding member of the Northwest Ecological Research Institute, who has been an independent wildlife research consultant in the Pacific Northwest since 1983 with emphasis on turtles, amphibians, secondary-cavity nesting birds, and bears. She has served as editor of the International Bear News and has conducted behavioral research at the Oregon Zoo. Her accomplishments include the establishment of a turtle rehabilitation facility in Portland and the direction of wetland restoration efforts in Clatsop County. She is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for Oregon and is producer of the natural history program, North Coast Nature, on Coast Community Radio. Everyone is welcome.

LONG BEACH -The 2010 SandSations sand castle competition is coming July 14 through July 17. A new event this year is the master’s demonstration starting Wednesday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Solo sand artists and a master team will build a Christmas sculpture. This process continues from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Thursday, July 15 and Friday, July 16. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can have your picture taken with the display. ASTORIA – Join guest trainer Frann Grossman as she prepares volunteer literacy tutors to help under-prepared adults improve their literacy skills from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 15 in the Library Conference Room at Clatsop Community College. Frann worked as a journalist and was public relations director for a hospital for many years before deciding to go for her MA TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Portland State University. Bald Eagle & Boat Festival

CATHLAMET – The 29th Annual Bald Eagle Day is Saturday, July 17 with a parade, which starts at 11 a.m. The theme this year is ‘Power of Community: Saluting Heroes and Volunteers.’ Scott Johnson from Naselle, a member of the Washington State Patrol, will be grand marshal. The street festival features many vendors, food, several bands, a kid’s area, the fire department water fight and a dunk tank. Then later that day there will be a beer garden at the Elochoman Marina, with musical entertainment and a fantastic fireworks show. Sunday’s Wooden Boat Festival begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. This day’s events include a barbeque, farmers market, Coast Guard rescue demonstration, free game for kids and lots more. Clamshell Railroad Days

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco, in partnership with the Peninsula Model Railroad Club, is hosting the annual Clamshell Railroad Days on July 17 and July 18. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, free for children under 12. This year’s event features several new attractions. In addition to the old favorite model train there will be model train layouts from four regional model railroad clubs, 23 tables of vendors and the Kid’s Craft Caboose. Historical interpreter Bob Duke will present as “Conductor Bob of the I.R.&N.” at 1 p.m., both days. A free lecture The Clamshell Railroad from Ilwaco to Nahcotta Then and Now will be presented on Saturday at 11 a.m. Sunday’s free lecture at 11:30 a.m., will cover The Clamshell Railroad from Ilwaco to Megler Then and Now. There will be a guided bus tour from Ilwaco to Nahcotta on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m., a guided bus tour from Ilwaco to Megler ($5 or $7.50 for both days). Sustainable salmon meeting

ABERDEEN – A regional meeting of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership (WCSSP) is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Wednesday, July 21 at the Port of Grays Harbor, 111 S. Wooding in Aberdeen. WCSSP is the newest of seven regional salmon recovery organizations in Washington, covering all river basins between Cape Flattery and Cape Disappointment that flow directly into the Pacific Ocean. The goals of WCSSP include facilitating a holistic view of the coast region; developing a regional plan to increase and coordinate salmon recovery and protection; supporting the functions of the four lead entity groups through which projects are developed, reviewed and funded; advocating for regional policies and partnerships; and seeking funding from additional sources. LONG BEACH – An issues forum, sponsored by AAUW, will be held on Friday, July 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Super 8 Motel in Long Beach. This forum will be an opportunity to hear from your candidates for local office. The format will include a question and answer period. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is a non-political organization dedicated to education. This is a non-partisan event. Natalie Hanson will be the moderator for the program. FinnFest

NASELLE – The bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival is coming to Naselle July 23 through July 25 on the grounds of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School. The festival opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, various cultural programs including an amazing documentary on the history of Estonia. On Saturday there is the Paavo Nurmi Run at 8 a.m., then the official opening ceremonies and a variety of musical presentations, performers and dancers throughout the day. Plus you don’t want to miss the maypole dancers, the wife carry and the boot toss event, and all of the various booths with a wide variety of Finnish items. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital has scheduled a series of classes on chronic disease self-management. They will be held July 23 and July 30, and Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room B. The title of this free series is “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.” Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops. LB Rodeo

LONG BEACH – The 65th annual NPRA Long Beach Rodeo is coming July 24 and July 25 at the rodeo grounds on Sandridge Road. Events start off with a rodeo parade on Friday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m., in downtown Long Beach. There will be a cowboy breakfast both days at the clubhouse from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Rodeo action starts at 1 p.m. both days. Saturday night after the rodeo, family night starts. Rodeo dance

LONG BEACH – Northwest Trail Riders Association is holding a rodeo dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., July 24 at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, featuring music by The Toys. Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for children; a family of four or more gets in for $25. Plus, free dance lessons will be offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, will be the site of a monthly Authors’ Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for July 28. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Coffee and goodies are available at 6 p.m., and writers will sign-up for reading slots beginning at 7 p.m. For more information call 642-4932.

Agricultural Incentives

SOUTH BEND – The deadline for agricultural producers (including private forest landowners) to apply for financial and technical assistance for USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is Aug. 13.

The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, is a voluntary, technical and financial assistance program designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities and reduce soil loss. In most instances, participants pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices.
