SKAMOKAWA – Redmen Hall in Skamokawa announces their opening exhibit for 2010. The exhibit, “Tom and Cora Irving – Master Quilters,” honors two quilters who have been quilting for many decades, who have won many awards, and who have displayed their work over much of the Pacific Northwest. SEAVIEW – The second annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 13 at Peninsula Church Center in Seaview. This event benefits the PACE Nutrition program and FISH Emergency Fund. Pick a handcrafted bowl made by local artists and students from Ocean Beach School District, have some soup and bread and then take your bowl home. There is a suggested donation of $10 per bowl. SEAVIEW -Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. marks the fourth annual performance at the Sou’Wester by the Fabulous Whateverly Brothers – Dan Roberts, Matthew Moeller and Chris Glanister. The Whateverly Brothers, a vocal trio from the Puget Sound region, are well known for their fun and exuberant performances. All styles and genre of music are fair game to the Whateverly Brothers, whether it be folk, doo wop, rock, American, classical or traditional, the brothers mold it into their own unique style. School testing
PENINSULA – The High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) will be administered to 10th grade students March 16 through March 18 for reading and writing and April 13 and April 15 for math and science. Students in the 11th and 12th grade wishing to retake the WASL for the purpose of improving prior scores, may do so by taking the HSPE on these dates. The Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) paper/pencil testing window will be administered to third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from May 12 to May 28. The Measurements of Student Progress online testing window will be administered to seventh grade math and eighth grade reading from May 3 to June 4. The performance-based assessment includes reading, writing, mathematics and science and is based on Washington’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements. Art Show Entry Deadline
OCEAN PARK – Pre-registration for Peninsula Arts Association’s 19th Annual Spring Art Show and Sale is March 16. This year’s show is April 9, 10 and 11, at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. To enter you must be a PAA member. Membership dues are $20 for individual and $30 for family (two at same address). Student memberships have no fee. Census workers wanted
PACIFIC COUNTY – The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring temporary workers to ensure the 2010 Census is a success. To qualify you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be able to pass a background check and take a 30-minute, multiple-choice basic employment test that measures knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform a variety of census jobs. Upcoming testing dates are as follows: at Ilwaco Community Building, 11 a.m. on March 16 and at noon on March 20; at Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco at 3 p.m., March 17; and at various times on March 16, 17, 18, and March 19 at Ocean Park Timberland Library. Workers will also be required to possess a valid driver’s license and have use of a vehicle. U.S. citizenship is required to apply for census jobs, however, non-citizens will only be hired for these positions if there are no qualified U.S. citizens available. All temporary census employees must be able to commit to training, for which they will be compensated at their regular hourly rate. For information call 866-861-2010 (toll free). Peninsula Quilt Show
ILWACO – The 15th Annual Peninsula Quilt Guild Show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20 and from noon to 4 p.m., on Sunday, March 21 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. This year’s theme is “Quilting at the Beach.” More than 100 quilts will be on display. During the show there will be ongoing demonstrations of the various aspects of quilt making. This year’s prize quilt is called, “Oh My Stars.” Tickets are available for purchase, and you don’t have to be present to win. Food will be available for purchase from the Ocean Park Lions Club. Farm summit
CATHLAMET – The Wahkiakum Food and Farm Network, the WSU Extension office and the master gardeners are presenting their sixth annual Food and Farm Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., on March 20. The theme of the summit is ‘How to grow your own groceries,’ and includes a wide range of topics from pest control to garden planning. The summit will be held in the River Street meeting room in Cathlamet. There is a $20 registration fee per individuals or $35 per couple, with walk-ins welcome. Women of the Sea
LONG BEACH – On March 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at their annual Afternoon Tea Theatre at the Long Beach Elks, the Willapa Bay Chapter of the AAUW will present “Women of the Sea,” a historical representation of women who have made maritime history. The American Association of University Women is an organization dedicated to the education of women and proceeds from this event will benefit the scholarship fund for Ilwaco High School. LONG BEACH – Beginning at 11 a.m., on March 20 at the arch near the Bolstad beach approach, there will be a two-mile walk
