LONG BEACH – Crisis Support Network has a poster that reads, “Domestic or Sexual Violence: This business is a safe haven to place a call for help if you are a victim of domestic or sexual violence.” Any business that would like a poster should come by the Chinook Observer during regular business hours.

Blood drive

ILWACO – From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Jan. 27, there will be a blood drive at the high school in Ilwaco. If you are 17 years old or older, weigh more than 110 pounds, are in good health and without risk factors for hepatitis or HIV, you are probably eligible to donate blood.

Author Readings

ILWACO – Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, will be the site of a monthly Authors’ Showcase the last Wednesday evening of the month, beginning Jan. 27. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Coffee and goodies available at 6 p.m., and writers will sign-up for reading slots beginning at 7 p.m. For more information call 642-4932.

Weather radio program

PENINSULA – Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is participating in a NOAA weather radio program designed to educate the public on the warnings and alerts that may be issued from the National Weather Service. On Jan. 27 at 9 a.m., at Pacific County Fire District No. 1, 26110 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park and then at 2 p.m. at the Ilwaco Community Building at 158 First Avenue North, information on the weather radio program will be presented. The sessions are open to everyone, but radios are limited to the first 60 residents who meet certain income level requirements. Kindergarten ready!

SEAVIEW – Parents of children up to age five are invited to free seminars from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview to learn more about their child’s development. The seminars provide parents with information about how their child learns, as well as materials and activities for use at home to make learning easy and fun. Parents and children ages two to four years old should attend the seminar on Jan. 27 and parents and children four and five years old should attend the Feb. 3 seminar. ILWACO – Ease gently into the gardening season and learn from a pro as master gardener and certified arborist Earl Miller presents a six-week course on gardening at the Ilwaco Timberland Library at 158 First Avenue North in Ilwaco. Planning course

PACIFIC COUNTY – Warm up to good books and join in Timberland Regional Library’s 13th annual Adult Winter Reading program, running through Monday, March 15. For each five books or audio books you finish during the program period, complete a form and turn it in at a Timberland library by Monday, March 15. Participants must be 18 or older and have a current Timberland library card. Prizes, including overnight resort getaways and book-and-beverage baskets, will be drawn on March 22. Local Timberland libraries will award additional prizes that have been donated by businesses and Friends of the Library groups.

Teen dance

LONG BEACH – From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Jan. 30, youth ages 16 to 19 years old are invited to an evening of great music, food and fun at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Concessions include teen favorites, plus there will be a dance contest from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is a zero tolerance dance, and is an opportunity for teens to have fun in a safe environment. Woodcrafter show

OCEAN PARK – Local craftsman Wayne Ivy will host a show of his amazing work from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 30 and Sunday, Jan. 31, at Adelaide’s in Ocean Park. More than 20 pieces will be on display and available for purchase, with 15 percent of all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula. One piece will also be raffled off, with all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club. Raffle tickets will be available at the event and the winner will be announced Sunday afternoon. Ivy will be on hand both days to answer questions about materials, style, workmanship, and the like.

Cribbage

Sunday, Jan. 31Orpheus Youth Ensemble

ILWACO – As part of the Poulshock concert series sponsored by Water Music Festival, a varied choral program will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. at the Inn at Harbour Village, and on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. at the Peninsula Baptist Church. The first half will be comprised of madrigals staged in traditional Renaissance costume. The second half will feature solo and choral compositions and arrangements by director Barbara Poulshock. Admission is free, but donations are happily accepted to defray the cost of the venues.

Art Around Town

ILWACO – Artwork at the Ocean Beach Hospital is from the first and second place winners of the fall Peninsula Art Association art show held in September 2009. A variety of works, such as watercolor, oil, pastel, photographs, charcoal and collage will be on display. This is a fine example of artwork available from our area. This exhibit is free and can be viewed most any day of the week. Enjoy!

LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach rescheduled their flushing and flow testing of hydrants in the Long Beach and Seaview area through Friday, Feb. 5 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This action may cause temporary discoloration of the water due to iron sediment and a reduction in pressure. PENINSULA – The 13th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place Feb. 12 through Feb. 15. This is a good way for kids and parents to do something with wildlife and the outdoors.
