Hydrant flushing

LONG BEACH – The city of Long Beach is flushing and flow testing hydrants in the Long Beach/Seaview area between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., until Dec. 18. This may cause temporary discoloration of the water due to iron sediment and a reduction in pressure. There are no health risks associated with the discoloration. LONG BEACH – On Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon to 3 p.m., six Peninsula authors will be meeting and greeting the public at a holiday book sale at Long Beach Coffee Roasters, 810 Pacific Highway. Featured authors and their latest books include Jan Bono, Robert Brake, Birdie Etchinson, Patty Hardin, Lorrie Haight, and Barbara Haines Howett. Books make great gifts, and a locally written book, specially autographed by the author, is a wonderful gift for anyone.

Seasonal concert

OYSTERVILLE – The historic Oysterville Church, decorated for the holidays, will be the setting for “Sounds of the Season,” a concert set to begin at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 12. Performing artists include Cheri Walker on harp, singers Christl and Andrea Mack, Anja and Andrea Patten, and Micheal Campellone and the Bayside Singers, directed by Sandy Nielson. The varied program will feature music for Hanukah, Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, Weinachts favorites from Germany and a Christmas sing-along. Gifts That Make a Difference

ASTORIA – Gifts That Make a Difference, Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, is an alternative gifts fair where holiday shoppers may donate to over 30 area non-profits in the names of people on their gift lists. Forestry workshop

YELM – On Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Northwest Certified Forestry will host a one-day workshop for small woodland owners on ‘How to Develop a Forest Stewardship Plan’ for their property. Workshop topics will include: developing goals and objectives for your forest, mapping forest resources, defining and characterizing forest stands, collecting and recording forest inventory data, resources for developing a plan, developing a forest monitoring plan, developing an activity schedule, recording forest management activities, and more. Food bank needs

OCEAN PARK – The Ocean Park Food Bank is collecting holiday foods such as evaporated milk, canned fruit, corn and other similar holiday items so they can provide special meal products for Christmas. Blacksmithing workshop

MENLO – On Sunday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Twin Harbors Coalition is celebrating the end of its first year with a blacksmithing workshop conducted by Larry “Dutch” Holland at 1036 SR-6 in Menlo. Blacksmithing will afford you the opportunity to make your own garden/home tools, or repair the ones you already own, or you can manufacture your own tools or trinkets to sell. Either way, this is your chance to learn how to forge steel the way it was done in the old days, including learning various techniques for shaping, bending, twisting and welding steel. Tuba Christmas Concert

ILWACO – If you relish the idea of dressing casually to have some real fun while listening to four exceptionally-talented tuba players play traditional and non-traditional ditties, you’ll want to show up at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13. Often tubas are considered as ungainly giants at the rear of bands, playing monotonous low tones to make other instruments sound better. But the Astoria Tuba Quartet embraces a range of horns that produce a rich deep sound that will warm and brighten a cool winter’s day for all who attend. All members of the quartet perform in notable bands, orchestras, and symphonies and are involved in a myriad of other musical activities. Bingo @ the Elks

Remember the Magic

OCEAN PARK – The third annual “Remember the Magic” holiday light show continues throughout the month at Bob and Mary Peterson’s Ocean Park home. From 5 p.m. to around 8 p.m., stop by to watch hundreds of Christmas lights twinkle as they are synchronized to classic holiday songs and some modern hits from Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The show may run longer on the nights closest to Christmas. Drive to 29011 H Street in Ocean Park (north of Joe Johns and south of 295th on the ocean side). Pull into the driveway and tune your car radio to 89.5 FM to enjoy music from the warmth of your car. This is a free event that collects donations for the South Pacific County Humane Society. “Remember the Magic” will have nightly shows through Dec. 26.

SEAVIEW – NAMI Pacific County meets from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place in Seaview. Anyone affected by brain illnesses or interested in mental health recovery is welcome at NAMI meetings. We will have a fun and relaxing time. LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks, located at 110 N. Pacific Highway, is now offering Taekwon-do on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., to anyone interested in learning the Korean art of self-defense. Taught by master instructors, these classes are open to both beginning and advanced students and will build increased strength and flexibility, as well as confidence in body and mind. PACIFIC COUNTY – The Peninsula’s Third Annual Toys for Tots drive is now underway. Until Dec. 18, drop off new, unwrapped toys at Naselle High School; All Seasons Kidstuff in Chinook; Bank of Pacific in Ilwaco, the Chinook Observer, Bank of the Pacific, Dennis Company, KeyBank and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Long Beach; Jimella’s Seafood Market in Klipsan; and Bank of the Pacific and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Ocean Park. All donations will be kept locally. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity and donations are tax deductible. KLIPSAN – On Dec. 17 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Peninsula Senior Activity Center is hosting their monthly Thursday night dinner. Come and enjoy chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green salad and dessert for just $7 for adults and $5 for children. Everyone is welcome.

Bird count

PACIFIC COUNTY – The Christmas Bird Count is from dawn to dusk on Saturday, Dec. 19. All are invited to participate, from feeder watchers to those who are assigned a group to count in the field. Bring your binoculars, boots, warm clothes and a lunch. After the count, all participants are invited to the Hunters Inn on Highway 4 at the east end of Naselle for a no-host dinner. Service groups open house

KLIPSAN – Saturday, Jan. 30, the Peninsula Senior Activity Center will be hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., welcoming the representatives from various service organizations serving the Peninsula. This will be a wonderful opportunity to familiarize yourself with the different agencies that provide services to our Peninsula.
