DAR meeting

Elks honor veterans
LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elks Lodge No. 1937 salutes our military veterans and is serving dinner to all military veterans and active-duty military personnel starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18. ILWACO – Calling volunteers! The Ilwaco MS/HS Youth Action “Klub” and their advisor Sarah Taylor are planning the annual Middle School All Night Lock-in on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., continuing until Saturday morning at 7 a.m. They are recruiting adult volunteers who are willing to provide general supervision, lead activities, chaperone the gym or provide support in the kitchen. Volunteer shifts have been divided into six-hour increments as follows, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. or 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., although volunteers at any time for any length of time are welcome. Holiday bazaar
CATHLAMET – St. James’ Annual Holiday Bazaar will be held at 1134 Columbia Street in Cathlamet. The bazaar is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. You will find Lingonberry products, Scandinavian goodies and yummy meals. A huge bake sale features goodies from several different ethnic traditions including dark English fruitcake and breads from Italy. Nancy is a popular rabbit judge and international consultant on raising rabbits. The clinics will be for those in the five priority groups according to the Center for Disease Control. The number of doses available will be limited and may vary from week to week depending on what is received from the manufacturer. Sports Booster signs
PENINSULA – It’s time to send in your annual fee for the Ilwaco High School Gym sign or to become a member for the first time. Individuals, families, organizations and businesses are welcome to purchase a sponsorship sign for the initial $75 fee to create the blue and gold signs that are two feet long and six inches tall. For those who already have a sign from a previous year, the annual fee is $50. All funds raised from the gym signs will support Ilwaco Sports Boosters youth activity contributions and the scholarship program. Ilwaco Sports Boosters meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., typically in the Ilwaco High School Library. This month’s meeting is Nov. 24. Parenting Workshop
LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elementary is hosting an interactive parenting workshop entitled, “Guiding Good Choices” on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., through Dec. 8. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Guiding Good Choices gives families the skills to work together and take action to help prevent children from destructive decisions and other problem behaviors. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines, skills to strengthen their relationship with their child and how to help the child develop healthy behaviors. Future EventsThanksgiving dinner
LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks will host a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 26 at the lodge. This dinner is open to the public and offered at no charge, however, donations will be accepted for PACE. Dinner will be cooked by volunteer members of PACE. Elk members and their families will do serving and cleanup.
Garbage pickup revised
PENINSULA – Peninsula Sanitation Service will not be working on Thanksgiving. All customers whose garbage is normally picked up on Thursday will have pick up on Friday instead. It would be appreciated if you have your tote out by 6:30 a.m. for pickup.
Holiday closures
PACIFIC COUNTY – Students will be released early on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and there will be no school on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition, all banks and credit unions, all branches of the library and post offices as well as city, county, state and federal offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26. The Chinook Observer will be closed on Thursday only, and will be open regular hours on Friday. Many city and county offices and all Timberland Library branches will also be closed on Friday.

“Mud Sticks”
ASTORIA – The Friends of the Columbia River Maritime Museum will not meet during the month of November. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11:30 a.m., in the Kern Room of the museum. The speaker will be Jim Sayce, a retired teacher. His program is entitled “Mud Sticks” and is about the pilings in the Columbia River.

Foot care
PENINSULA – Harbors Home Health and Hospice provides nail and foot care by appointment for disabled and senior persons, who are unable to complete their own nail care. Appointments are made in Long Beach the first Wednesday of each month and in Ocean Park the second Wednesday every other month. There is a $25 fee. Medicare and most insurance do not cover nail care. Clamming
PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Wednesday, Dec. 2, and Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Wednesday, Dec. 2, 7:41 p.m. -1.3; Friday, Dec. 4, 9:14 p.m. -1.3; Saturday, Dec. 5, 10:01 p.m. -1.1. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Messiah Sing Along

Boat Parade/Christmas Tree
ILWACO – Ilwaco is holding their annual lighted boat parade and lighting of the crab pot Christmas tree on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Crab Pot Tree lighting will be at 5 p.m. with some caroling, and at 6 p.m., the Ilwaco Lighted Boat Parade to Station Cape Disappointment and back gets underway. Self-Defense Seminar
NASELLE – A free self-defense seminar hosted by Crisis Support Network will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Naselle school gym. Taught by Jeff Fithen, the class is designed to introduce teenage and adult women to a variety of strategies, including some street survival techniques, designed to help defend against an attack. A deputy sheriff for eight years, Fithen’s knowledge encompasses Tsun Jo Wing Chun Kung Fu, Tae Kwan Do, and the Cobra System (a combination of Tae Kwan Do and boxing). His techniques will work for everyone, regardless of age, size or gender. Participants will also gain more self-confidence in their abilities to survive in any situation. Gifts That Make a Difference
CLATSOP – Gifts That Make a Difference will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, and all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties are invited to register to be part of this event. This is an alternative gifts fair where holiday shoppers donate to participating non-profits in the names of people on their gift lists. This year, for the first time, donations may be made in volunteer hours, as well as cash contributions. Non-profits may also sell items related to their work, like tickets, scholarships and fundraising items. Registration is $20 through Dec. 12. Tuba Christmas Concert
ILWACO – If you relish the idea of dressing casually to have some real fun while listening to four exceptionally-talented tuba players play traditional and non-traditional ditties, you’ll want to show up at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13. Often tubas are considered as ungainly giants at the rear of bands, playing monotonous low tones to make other instruments sound better. But the Astoria Tuba Quartet embraces a range of horns that produce a rich deep sound that will warm and brighten a cool winter’s day for all who attend. All members of the quartet perform in notable bands, orchestras, and symphonies and are involved in a myriad of other musical activities.
