Wednesday, Nov. 11Veterans Day event

ILWACO – The public, and especially veterans and active-duty persons, are invited to a Veterans Day observance on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Members of the American Legion and Auxiliary, Don R. Grable Post and Unit No. 48 sponsor the event. Clam chowder and dessert will be served at noon, and anyone attending is asked to bring bread or a salad. Lt. Ahlin, commander of the Coast Guard Station at Cape Disappointment, will be the main speaker. Chinook Food Bank

Alzheimer’s support

LONG BEACH – Caring for someone with memory loss? Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with dementia. A free information and support group for care partners, family members and friends of individuals with dementia meets from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the second Wednesday of each month at the PUD auditorium, 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. PENINSULA – Ocean Beach School District and Naselle-Grays River Valley Schools will be closed on Nov. 11 for the Veterans Day holiday. In addition all banks, credit unions and library branches and post office branches will be closed.

Thursday, Nov. 12Willapa Anglers meet

NASELLE – The Willapa Anglers will meet on Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Hunters Inn in Naselle. Dinner and beverages are from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Two or three speakers from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will be talking about future salmon-management plans for Naselle River, concerning Chinook and Coho. The salmon plan will be radically changed in the future, with possibly 80 percent fewer hatchery releases of fall Chinook. There will also be information presented about gillnetting in Willapa Bay, including species and numbers caught and population trends. Plus expect a short treatment on sturgeon catches in Willapa Bay. Information will include gillnet harvest decisions, times of netting, and areas where netting will be allowed. Annual Christmas Bazaar

SEAVIEW – The annual St. Mary’s Parish Christmas bazaar is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 12, Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14 in Seaview. Lunch and a variety of desserts will be available for purchase, plus you will find a good variety of handcrafted items for special holiday gifts.

OP Chamber meeting

OCEAN PARK – The next meeting of the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is Thursday, Nov. 12 at 8 a.m., at the fire hall. Photo Club meeting

OCEAN PARK – Peninsula Photography Club will meet at 7 p.m., on Nov. 12 at the Ocean Park fire hall. The club welcomes anyone interested in the subject of photography and encourages photography as an art form. There is a list of club projects available at the Picture Attic. ILWACO – The Department of Licensing office in Ilwaco is now closed on Thursdays. Regular business hours are now as follows: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.; and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Line dancing

LONG BEACH – Line dancing continues at the Long Beach Elks every Thursday. A special beginning class is now offered at 1 p.m. each Thursday. Friends of Willapa meet

ILWACO – All members of the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge and interested members of the public are invited to attend the annual membership and board meeting to be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Ilwaco Public Library located at 158 First Avenue North. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Saturday, Nov. 14 through Monday, Nov. 16, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Saturday, Nov. 14, 5:49 p.m. -0.7; Sunday, Nov. 15, 6:34 p.m. -1.0; Monday, Nov. 16, 7:16 p.m. -1.0. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Health Department is scheduling H1N1 community clinics each Monday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., effective immediately. Clinics are by appointment only. The clinics are for those in the five priority groups according to the Center for Disease Control. The number of doses available will be limited and may vary from week to week depending on what is received from the manufacturer. Parenting Workshop

LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elementary is hosting an interactive parenting workshop entitled, “Guiding Good Choices” on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., through Dec. 8. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Guiding Good Choices will give families the skills to work together and take action to help prevent children from destructive decisions and other problem behaviors. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines, skills to strengthen their relationship with their child and how to help the child develop healthy behaviors. Bridge meeting

MEGLER – An open house, hosted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, to discuss the proposed repairs to the Astoria-Megler Bridge will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco. Oregon and Washington will evenly split the cost of repainting the bridge to protect the steel from rusting and deteriorating. Lane closures will be needed to make room for workers and equipment. Intermittent overnight full closures are proposed as well. The program is projected to begin late this year and end in 2011. DAR meeting

ASTORIA – The Astoria Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Nov. 18, at 11 a.m., (note time change) at the Astoria Golf and Country Club. Youth lock-in

ILWACO – Calling volunteers! The Ilwaco MS/HS Youth Action “Klub” (YAK) and their advisor Sarah Taylor are planning the annual Middle School All Night Lock-in on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., and will continue until Saturday morning at 7 a.m. They are recruiting adult volunteers who are willing to provide general supervision, lead activities, chaperone the gym or provide support in the kitchen. Volunteer shifts have been divided into six-hour increments as follows, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. or 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., although volunteers at any time for any length of time are welcome. Holiday bazaar

CATHLAMET – St. James’ Annual Holiday Bazaar is Nov. 20 and Nov. 21 at 1134 Columbia Street in Cathlamet. The bazaar is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. You will find Lingonberry products, Scandinavian goodies and yummy meals. A huge bake sale features goodies from several different ethnic traditions include dark English fruitcake and breads from Italy. SOUTH BEND – On Nov. 21, at 10:30 a.m., Nancy Baskett from the WSU Extension office will present a program for those interested in raising rabbits. Nancy is a popular rabbit judge and international consultant on raising rabbits. Choir practice

NASELLE – The Finnish-American Choir, under the direction of Cliff Weimer, will be performing with the Northcoast Chorale at the Christmas Concert at the Deep River Historical Lutheran Church, Sunday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. Rehearsals will be held at the Naselle Lutheran Church, Saturday, Nov. 21, 28 and Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. Choir members are encouraged to attend at least one of these rehearsals, preferably all three.

OCEAN PARK – Santa Claus will be at the Bank of the Pacific in Ocean Park from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Sports Booster signs

PENINSULA – It’s time to send in your annual fee for the Ilwaco High School Gym sign or to become a member for the first time. Individuals, families, organizations and businesses are welcome to purchase a sponsorship sign for the initial $75 fee to create the blue and gold signs that are two feet long and six inches tall. For those who already have a sign from a previous year, the annual fee is $50. All funds raised will support the Ilwaco Sports Boosters youth activities contributions and scholarship program. Ilwaco Sports Boosters meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., typically in the Ilwaco High School Library. This month’s meeting is Nov. 24. Thanksgiving dinner

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks will host a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 26 at the lodge. This dinner is open to the public and offered at no charge, however, donations will be accepted for PACE. Dinner will be cooked by volunteer members of PACE. Elk members and their families will do serving and cleanup.

Feed the Hungry Bazaar

LONG BEACH – The 9th Annual Help Feed the Hungry Holiday Bazaar is set for Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 at the Edgewater Inn on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Children’s Christmas party

OCEAN PARK – The Ocean Park Eagles Lodge is hosting a party for children in the community on Dec. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the lodge. There will fun and games for kids. Boat Parade/Tree Lighting

ILWACO – Ilwaco is holding their annual lighted boat parade and lighting of the crab pot Christmas tree on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Crab Pot Tree lighting will be at 5 p.m. with some caroling, and at 6 p.m., the Ilwaco Lighted Boat Parade to Station Cape Disappointment and back gets underway. All boats are encouraged to enter the parade, regardless of size or type. For information on either event, call 642-8667.

PENINSULA – Mark your calendars now for the 4th Annual Christmas Home Tour coming Dec. 13. Come visit five beautiful homes decorated for the season.
