ILWACO – The American Legion’s 22nd Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, on Lake Street next to the River City School of Arts and Crafts (old American Legion Building). Eleven people who protect our safety on the Long Beach Peninsula will be honored after dinner. The main speaker for the evening will be the American Legion’s State Commander Robert Schwartz. GRAYS RIVER – The annual luncheon and bazaar, sponsored by the women of the Friendship Circle of Grays River United Methodist Church at 3624 Highway 4 West in Grays River, will be held for two days this year. Living Well Workshop
ILWACO – Living well with chronic conditions is a workshop to help lighten your load through self-management. This is a free six-week workshop that runs once a week on Fridays through Nov. 6, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. If you have a chronic condition and you’d like to improve your healthful behaviors and health status this workshop can help. This workshop covers better breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, fatigue management, healthy eating, depression management, exercise, how to work with your health care provider and lots more. CATHLAMET – The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center is hosting “Talking History” through October. Saturday, Oct. 24Sea Shanty Camp
CHINOOK – On Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sea Shanty Camp of the Columbia will be the theme of a one-day camp offered by Hank Cramer, Mary Garvey, Matt Moeller and other instructors for a full-day immersion into maritime music. Attend one or all sessions for free in the riverfront theater at Fort Columbia State Park near Chinook. Box lunches are available with pre-registration. CHINOOK – Friends of Chinook School are again hosting “Oktoberfest” Chinook-style on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the historic Chinook School on Highway 101. CHEHALIS – The 2009 Fall Forestry Educational Seminar on “Understanding and Managing Tree Growth” is planned Saturday, Oct. 31, at Veterans Memorial Museum, Chehalis, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The seminar features several speakers and optional tour of Veterans Memorial Museum. Topics will include: Tree physiology and the annual growth cycle; how trees grow at different spacings; wood qualities of a 40-plus-year-old stand; global warming – another unfulfilled government promise; and management effects on productivity and sustainability.
Cost for American Tree Farm-certified tree farmers or Tree Farm inspectors is $70 ($110 with spouse); other individual adult: $80 ($120 with spouse); children under 18 or student rate: $50. Bingo giving
LONG BEACH – Be a part of Elks Bingo in the month of November to help our local community during the holiday and giving season. For each Sunday session in November, the Elks will donate $200 from bingo game proceeds to the following groups: the Boys and Girls Club (Nov. 1); food bank (Nov. 15); Camp Victory (Nov. 22); and Christmas Angels (Nov. 29).

Bob Milne to perform
LONG BEACH – The very talented pianist Bob Milne will perform at a special benefit for the World Kite Museum on Saturday, Nov. 7 beginning at 3 p.m. Milne plays and knows more about the piano and playing boogie woogie and ragtime music than most anyone you will hear. Parenting Workshop
LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elementary is hosting an interactive parenting workshop entitled, “Guiding Good Choices” on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning Nov. 10 and running through Dec. 8. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Guiding Good Choices will give families the skills to work together and take action to help prevent children from destructive decisions and other problem behaviors. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines, skills to strengthen their relationship with their child and how to help the child develop healthy behaviors. Gifts That Make a Difference
CLATSOP – Over a hundred non-profits serve the residents of Clatsop and Pacific counties, providing food, housing, clothing, care, education, recreation, counseling, spiritual support and a wide array of arts and entertainment. During this year’s holiday season, the public will get the chance to say thank you in a way that’s fun, festive and supportive. Gifts That Make a Difference will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, and all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties are invited to register to be part of this event. This is an alternative gifts fair where holiday shoppers donate to participating non-profits in the names of people on their gift lists. This year, for the first time, donations may be made in volunteer hours, as well as cash contributions. Non-profits may also sell items related to their work, like tickets, scholarships and fundraising items. Registration is now open for all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties. Early registration (through Oct. 11) is $15. Registration is $20 from Oct. 12 through Dec. 12. UNITED STATES – Nov. 1 is the date that Daylight Saving Time ends and you should turn your clocks back one hour to standard time. The official time change occurs at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. This is also a good time to check all the smoke detectors in your home and change the batteries.
Dine at the Source
ILWACO – In conjunction with the exhibition Peninsula Eats: Dine at the Source, Nanci Main and Jimella Lucas will be reminiscing with friends, former employees and fans in the Columbia Pacific Museum’s special exhibition gallery devoted to the history of their landmark restaurant from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1. Founded in 1950, the Ark Restaurant and Bakery was a classic Peninsula restaurant specializing in “beach fare” such as, fried clams, chowder, and fish and chips. When Nanci and Jimella purchased it in 1981, it soon became a landmark for fresh local northwest cuisine. For the next 23 years, they established a legacy of fine dining for tourists and residents alike, becoming a destination for “foodies” from around the world. This installation includes artifacts borrowed from the owners and is sure to evoke fond memories for the many people who made the Ark their special occasion destination. KLIPSAN BEACH – The driver-safety class scheduled for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at the Peninsula Senior Center has been cancelled due to the instructor being seriously ill. The class will be rescheduled at a later date.
