PAA Art Show

Living Well Workshop

ILWACO – Living well with chronic conditions is a workshop to help lighten your load through self-management. This is a free six-week workshop that runs once a week on Fridays through Nov. 6, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. If you have a chronic condition and you’d like to improve your healthful behaviors, and health status this workshop can help. This workshop covers better breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, fatigue management, healthy eating, depression management, exercise, how to work with your health care provider and lots more. Talking history

CATHLAMET – The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center is hosting “Talking History” starting Oct. 9. Fly for Peace

LONG BEACH – One Sky, One World Kite Carnival is Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 at the Bolstad beach approach in Long Beach. This international kite fly for peace will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. LONG BEACH – Discovery Coast Audubon Society will host a presentation on the “Proposed Radar Ridge Wind Project” on Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., at the PUD auditorium on Sandridge Road. Julie Sackett, assistant regional manager for asset management with Department of Natural Resources and Dave Kobes of Energy Northwest will be discussing the electricity that can be available from wind turbines after the current contract expires. As part of the program you will have the opportunities to complete a brief, written questionnaire, learn about the symptoms of depression, and how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk. PENINSULA – Chefs, innkeepers and gourmands share their passion for one of the Peninsula’s more prolific and delectable natural products during the Wild Mushroom Celebration, which runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 15. Timed with the peak harvest, this unique event touts the talents of some of the Peninsula’s famed culinary community and the wealth of our fresh local ingredients available.

Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is tentatively scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Friday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 18, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 16, 7:02 p.m. -0.7; Saturday, Oct. 17, 7:48 p.m. -0.8; Sunday, Oct. 18, 8:32 p.m. -1.0. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Water Music Festival

PENINSULA – The Water Music Festival kicks off at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 16 with a concert at Hilltop Auditorium by Sans Souci, a chamber ensemble from Seattle. Tickets are $20. On Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m., at the Inn at Harbour Village, you are sure to enjoy Kim Angelis and the Bohemians, gypsy violin and ensemble. Tickets are free. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, at Oysterville Church, the Rose City Mixed Quarter, an a capella group, performs. Tickets are $15. Then on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., at Hilltop Auditorium, don’t miss Alpin Hong, a modern classic pianist. Tickets for his performance are $25 each. A special artists’ reception begins at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Pelicano Restaurant in Ilwaco where you will meet all of the artists from the weekend concerts. Tickets for the reception are $12 and include champagne or other beverages, chocolate desserts and other light fare. And finally on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m., at Hilltop Auditorium, Augustanan Jazz Quarter will perform. This group is made up of four of the Northwest’s best jazz musicians. Tickets are just $15. ILWACO – Ilwaco Timberland Library presents June Crain and the UFOs, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 17 for adults and teens. In 1993 while giving a presentation at the Ocean Shores Library, UFO investigator James E. Clarkson met June Crain, a woman who claimed to know that what he said was true: She had worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base from 1943-53, a pivotal period in the formulation of official UFO policy. Parenting Workshop

LONG BEACH – Long Beach Elementary is hosting an interactive parenting workshop entitled, “Guiding Good Choices” on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning Nov. 10 and running through Dec. 8. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Guiding Good Choices will give families the skills to work together and take action to help prevent children from destructive decisions and other problem behaviors. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines, skills to strengthen their relationship with their child and how to help the child develop healthy behaviors. Gifts That Make a Difference

CLATSOP – Over a hundred non-profits serve the residents of Clatsop and Pacific counties, providing food, housing, clothing, care, education, recreation, counseling, spiritual support and a wide array of arts and entertainment. During this year’s holiday season, the public will get the chance to say thank you in a way that’s fun, festive and supportive. Gifts That Make a Difference will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, and all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties are invited to register to be part of this event. Early registration (through Oct. 11) is $15. Registration is $20 from Oct. 12 through Dec. 12. UNITED STATES – Nov. 1 is the date that Daylight Saving Time ends and you should turn your clocks back one hour to standard time. The official time change occurs at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. This is also a good time to check all the smoke detectors in your home and change the batteries.

AARP Driving class

s KLIPSAN BEACH – The driver-safety class scheduled for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at the Peninsula Senior Center has been cancelled due to the instructor being seriously ill. The class will be rescheduled at a later date.
