ILWACO – Living well with chronic conditions is a workshop to help lighten your load through self-management. This is a free six-week workshop that runs once a week on Fridays beginning Oct. 2, and ending Nov. 6, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. If you have a chronic condition and you’d like to improve your healthful behaviors and health status this workshop can help. This workshop covers better breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, fatigue management, healthy eating, depression management, exercise, how to work with your health care provider and lots more. OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Lutheran Church is holding their annual salmon dinner and auction on Oct. 2. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the silent auction followed at 5:30 p.m., by the dinner, which includes baked salmon, rice pilaf, Italian green beans, salad, a beverage and Swedish cream. Country Days
GRAYS RIVER – The 4-H extension office is hosting the second annual Columbia River Country Days on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. Features include the slow moving parade on Friday afternoon as well as harvest walks on local farms and the lamplit dinner at the covered bridge on Saturday. In addition there is an art show by the Johnson Park artists which will be held at Johnson Park in Rosburg. Tickets for the dinner are $35 and are available at the Cathlamet and Naselle branches of The Bank of the Pacific as well as from the WSU Wahkiakum County extension office at 25 River Street in Cathlamet. ILWACO – October brings new artwork from Peninsula Arts Association to the Pacific County Building and Ocean Beach Hospital. “Trial By Fork”
ILWACO – On Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m., the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum and Humanities Washington present “Trial by Fork: Formal Victorian Dining Demystified” with historian Tames Alan. With this presentation Alan brings to life the Victorian era, when a formal dinner setting easily became a trial by fork. Explore a time of forgotten elegance, when one changed into dinner clothes and chose jewelry to reflect candlelight, where setting the table was an art, and serving a meal a well-choreographed dance. Tames will explain the mysteries of a formal 12-course Victorian dinner, from the menu and place setting, to what dishes were served with each course. Sunday, Oct. 4100 Days of Color
SURFSIDE – The Surfside Community Relations Committee is sponsoring a bulb container demonstration with Teresa Millner of the Planter Box on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Skating Lake Cabana located at 30012 W Street in Surfside. She will be planting a large container with a range of early flowering bulbs to late flowering bulbs that should produce flowers from February through June. Once planted, the container will be at the Surfside office for all to enjoy. In addition two smaller containers of bulbs will be planted for a raffle and Teresa will have some bulb collections available to purchase. A map is available at the Surfside office if you need directions, and the cabana provides shelter and a fireplace if the weather does not cooperate. Radar Ridge Wind Project
LONG BEACH – Discovery Coast Audubon Society will host a presentation on the “Proposed Radar Ridge Wind Project” on Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., at the PUD auditorium on Sandridge Road. Julie Sackett, assistant regional manager for asset management with Department of Natural Resources, and Dave Kobes, of Energy Northwest will be discussing the electricity that can be available from wind turbines after the current contract expires. Gifts That Make a Difference
CLATSOP – Over a hundred non-profits serve the residents of Clatsop and Pacific counties, providing food, housing, clothing, care, education, recreation, counseling, spiritual support and a wide array of arts and entertainment. During this year’s holiday season, the public will get the chance to say thank you in a way that’s fun, festive and supportive. Gifts That Make a Difference will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theater, and all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties are invited to register to be part of this event. This is an alternative gifts fair where holiday shoppers donate to participating non-profits in the names of people on their gift lists. This year, for the first time, donations may be made in volunteer hours, as well as cash contributions. Non-profits may also sell items related to their work, like tickets, scholarships and fundraising items. Registration is now open for all non-profits in Clatsop and Pacific counties. Early registration (through Oct. 11) is $15. Registration is $20 from Oct. 12 through Dec. 12. Fall back
UNITED STATES – Nov. 1 is the date that Daylight Saving Time ends and you should turn your clocks back one hour to standard time. The official time change occurs at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. This is also a good time to check all the smoke detectors in your home and change the batteries.
AARP Driving class
KLIPSAN BEACH – The driver-safety class scheduled for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at the Peninsula Senior Center has been cancelled due to the instructor being seriously ill. The class will be rescheduled at a later date.
