Wednesday, Aug. 19Kite Festival

LONG BEACH – The 2009 Washington State International Kite Festival continues through Aug. 23. There is a different theme each day of the festival. All events are free, with the exception of some workshops, which charge a nominal fee, plus there is a free trolley from downtown Long Beach and the kite museum to the Bolstad approach that will run Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday. Aug. 22, get your ticket for the awards banquet and auction with a carnival set for 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. Early bird price for the banquet is $18, with tickets at the door for $22. Ballroom Dancing

Thursday, Aug. 20Sports Boosters feed

LONG BEACH – The Ilwaco Sports Boosters are hosting a salmon, tuna and steamer clam feed from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 Pacific Highway North in Long Beach. Plus there will be hot dogs available for kids, chowder, shrimp cocktail and more. This is a fundraiser for the booster club to help with costs of sporting events for junior and senior high school students. Call 642-4515 for more information.

Diabetes support

ILWACO – The August diabetes support group meets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., on Aug. 20 in the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting room. The topic is pre-hospital diabetes emergencies, with the guest facilitator David Hood, a paramedic with Pacific County Fire District No. 1. This meeting is free and open to the public. Mexican dinner

KLIPSAN – Treat yourself to a great Mexican dinner from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on Aug. 20, and help raise money for our non-profit Peninsula Senior Activity Center. The dinner is only $7 for adults and $5 for kids. The public is invited to attend and see this wonderful center!

OYSTERVILLE – There will be a really big garage sale at the historic old Oysterville Schoolhouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Aug. 23. ILWACO – Ocean Beach Hospital is hosting photographer Carly Henningan during August. The new county building on Sandridge Road is showing paintings in a variety of mediums by Carol Johnson, Judy Leonard, Wes Moehnke, Tom Morrow, Leonard Ellis and Jill Merrill in July and August. Come and see these works of art from members of the Peninsula Arts Association.

MAMAS group

LONG BEACH – A group called “MAMAS” meets every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at 811 Pacific Hwy S, Suite 16 in the midwifery office between THC Organic Market and LB Coffee Roasters. This is a support group for mothers on the Long Beach Peninsula and surrounding areas and covers mothering issues such as breastfeeding, parenting, birthing and nutrition and much more. Saturday, Aug. 22Aloha from Waikiki Beach

CAPE D – The final concert in the summer series is set for 2 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the Waikiki Beach amphitheater. The group “Na Mele ‘O Hawaii” will share the aloha spirit with their great music. SummerFest fun

LONG BEACH – SummerFest activities in the city of Long Beach continue with free face painting, horse and wagon rides, plus enjoy events such as a family sidewalk chalk art contest. OYSTERVILLE – The Aug. 23 Vesper Services in the historic Oysterville Church will begin at 3 p.m., and will be led by Pastor DeWayne LaPointe of the Peninsula Assembly of God in Ocean Park. Music will be provided by Cate and Starla Gable singing with ukulele and guitar accompaniment. Jeanne Bellinger will play the old pump organ. Blessing of Backpacks &?BBQ/Open House

CHINOOK – In preparation for the new school year, a special blessing of the backpacks will be held at Chinook Lutheran Church at 767 Highway 101 during the 10 a.m. worship service. All are invited. Then at 2 p.m. that day, there will be a barbecue and open house to celebrate the newly renovated parsonage and new pastor. All are welcome to bring a side dish to share and place setting to use, the burgers and hot dogs will be provided.

Monday, Aug. 24Port celebration

NAHCOTTA – The Port of Peninsula is celebrating the completion of their new Nahcotta dock project with an open house from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and a dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. The new service dock is up and running and provide a new, secure and improved facility for customers. Wednesday Art Groups

PENINSULA – Art Bunch meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. It is open to anyone; with a $5 fee for attendance. Then, the Firehouse Artists meet each Wednesday at the Ocean Park fire hall from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome and there is no fee to participate. These groups meet to paint, draw, create and critique in an atmosphere of camaraderie and support.

Future EventsLongboard Races

CATHLAMET – Cathlamet will host a series of professional longboard races on Aug. 28, 29, and 30, in partnership with Pacific Northwest Washington long boarders. At 5 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 28, some of the pros will conduct a clinic for area participants on longboard safety and techniques. There will be a Saturday slalom race near downtown Cathlamet beginning at noon. The course will be set up by Skip Marcotte, North American Tight Slalom Champion. The push race will originate and end at the Stockhouse Farm and cover seven miles on Puget Island on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The premier race on Sunday starts at 9 a.m., and is a downhill race through downtown Cathlamet, featuring professional racer, from Washington, Oregon and beyond. There is $500 in prize money plus custom designed long boards for event winners. Longboarding is a relatively new sport and is very much like snowboarding only on wheels. The races are similar to ski races, with the downhill and slalom being the most familiar formats. A push race is like a cross country or Nordic ski event and is on flatter land. There will be opportunities for Wahkiakum County longboarders to race on the weekend and to learn from professional racers during the Friday clinic.

Evening of One Acts

ILWACO – The 2nd Story Playhouse at 108 Spruce Street in Ilwaco is hosting an evening of one act plays, showcasing new, local directors and writers beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30. The first play, ‘Children’s Readers Theatre,’ directed by Rita Smith; ‘Motorcycle Mama,’ written and directed by Jan Bono; ‘Ilwaco’s Winoceros,’ written and directed by Joe Paliani; and ‘All I Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play,’ written by Werner Trieschmann and directed by Ed Ahlers. OCEAN PARK – The Friends of the Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Sept. 4, 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Plus there is a members only pre-sale from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3. If you aren’t a member you can join then. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and .$50 for regular size paperback On Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., bring your standard size paper grocery bag and fill it with books of your choice for just $3. Stock up now, it’s nine months until the next sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries.

CATHLAMET – On Sept. 5, the Wahkiakum County Chamber is sponsoring the Sixth Annual Buzzards Breath Chili Cook Off in Cathlamet. Key ingredients

ILWACO – The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting an exhibit entitled, “Key Ingredients” from Sept. 5 to Oct. 25. This exhibition explores the connections between Americans and the food they produce, prepare, preserve and present at the table. It is a provocative and thoughtful look at the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations. Chinook Arts Festival

CHINOOK – The Chinook Arts Festival is scheduled daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 5, 6 and from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7 at Highway 101 and Olympia Street in Chinook. The festival features juried handcrafted art which includes stained glass, woodcarving and sculpting, pottery, blown glass, photography, oil and watercolors, jewelry and more.

Apply to attend Camp Victory

PENINSULA – Camp Victory, a program is for girls from Pacific and Gray’s Harbor counties who have been sexually abused, is accepting applications for the four-day recreational camp held in October each year. This camp free of charge, and girls are matched one-on-one with carefully screened, trained adult workers. Adults are needed to assist, are carefully screened and receive 30 to 40 hours of training prior to their actual camp experience on subjects such as sexual abuse and prevention, child development, communication skills and camp activities. In addition Camp Victory greatly benefits from the assistance of “Camp Angels” – men and women who provide help with setup, cleanup and meal preparation throughout the weekend, providing a much needed support team for the entire camp.
