Beach cleanup

PENINSULA – Make your plans now for the big, bad and ugly 2009 Beach Cleanup on July 5! Then gather your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers and head to the beach – specifically from the high tide line up into the dunes.

What dazzles the night sky is ugly on the beach or floating in our ocean. Please head out to the beach and help keep our wildlife safe, our ocean clean and what should be our pristine beaches clean from the aftermath of our holiday celebration.

Formal cleanup starts at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning, when beach approach coordinators will begin greeting volunteers. However, feel free to begin cleaning whenever you can. Whether you can help for 10 minutes before you go to work, four hours, or all day, every hand is needed after the fireworks; in fact, thousands of hands are needed. Let’s not allow the tides to take the debris out. Not only will it wash back in for months, the plastic never goes away, ever – it just gets small enough to get into our food chain – yuck!

Everyone on the beach is asked to please clean up after their celebration, every one of them. please do not bury debris; the jagged mess rises to the surface with our strong winds. Don’t kid yourself by thinking it stays buried. please, haul it away to the dumpsters provided at the Long Beach Bolstad Avenue and Ocean Park Bay Avenue beach approaches as well as others. If particles are too hot to handle, please douse them with water – you’ve got a whole ocean handy! And, please return the next morning to pick up what you missed. Let’s all do even more than your fair share this year.

For more information contact Shelly Pollock at 665-5388 or e-mail her at shelly@ourbeach.org or visit our Web site at www.ourbeach.org.
