LONGVIEW – On Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m., Willapa Hills Audubon will sponsor a program, “Wild Utah: America’s Redrock Wilderness.” The program is free to the public and will be held in the Cowlitz P.U.D. auditorium at 961 12th Ave in Longview. In conjunction with the program, Bob Brister, interregional outreach coordinator for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, will give a presentation on the current status of the Utah wilderness movement. Free tax help

OCEAN PARK – Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2008 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 15. No appointment is needed – this is a “sign in and wait your turn” service. ASTORIA – Wickiup Grange is hosting a chili and cornbread feed from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, April 15. Spring into gardening

ASTORIA – Clatsop County Master Gardeners are hosting spring into gardening with two upcoming events. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 16, TV personality and gardening expert Ed Hume will discuss “Growing Vegetables on the Coast” at Astoria High School auditorium. The cost is $5 at the door. Then on April 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds, eight speakers will present a variety of talks aimed at helping everyone grow their own vegetables and flowers. Topics include organic vegetable gardening, wild birds in the garden, pest controls, fruit tree care and pruning, growing cut flowers, community gardens and gardening with kids. The cost is $18 for the full day.

Turkey dinner

KLIPSAN – The public is invited to a turkey dinner meal at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center on Thursday, April 16 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A great meal deal for all ages at $7 for adults and $5 for children and it includes mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry relish, green beans, Jell-o salad, a beverage and pumpkin pie!

Summer camp

FridaySoccer referee training

ASTORIA – Long Beach Peninsula residents are being offered an opportunity to qualify as a soccer referee. A beginners’ class will be taught at Clatsop Community College in Astoria April 17 to April 19. Students must attend all three sessions. They are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 17; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 18; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 19. The class includes classroom instruction and practical training tips. Successful students will qualify as U.S. Soccer Federation referees. Age 14 and above are invited to sign up. Instructors are Doug Smith of Beaverton, Ore., and Patrick Webb, of Long Beach. Naselle goes Broadway

NASELLE – Naselle students are presenting a Broadway show revue written by Naselle drama director Barb Swanson titled “A Broadway Show … Naselle Style.” Performances are at 7 p.m., Friday, April 17, and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. Saturday evening they offer half-price tickets to those attending both performances. The show is based on five productions that students have presented in past years: “Annie,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Music Man,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Into the Woods,” with students from grades five through 12 in the production as well as several adults. In addition, the local barbershop quartet under the direction of Cliff Weimer, Finnish community adult choir leader, will be singing in the show as well as performing before the show opens.

ASTORIA – The Rainland Fly Casters is holding its annual fundraising banquet, auction and raffle at 5:30 p.m. on April 18 at the American Legion, 1132 Exchange St., in Astoria. Boater safety class

ILWACO – Members of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary No. 62 are offering a boater education safety class starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 in the Port of Ilwaco meeting room. The cost of the class is $25, which includes all course materials. In 2005 a law was passed requiring boat operators who were born after Jan. 1, 1955, to take a boater education course to operate boats with 15 horsepower motors or greater. Play auditions

PENINSULA – Peninsula Association of Performing Artists is holding open auditions for “Once Upon a Mattress,” a delightful musical comedy based on the fairy tale of the princess and the pea. Water Music benefit

SEAVIEW – During April, every Tuesday night the 42nd Street Café will set aside 10 percent of their sales to benefit the Water Music Festival Organization. This year Water Music Festival is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of bringing high quality music of various genres, including classical and jazz to the Peninsula. ASTORIA – Radio listeners will want to tune in on April 24 at 2 p.m. to ‘eTown’, a National Public Radio program carried by KMUN, 91.9 FM. Shelly Pollock, one of the principals behind the Grassroots Garbage Gang, will be interviewed by the show’s hosts, Steve and Helen Forrester, about the three annual Beach Clean-up events on the peninsula’s 28-miles of beach. ‘eTown’, which airs weekly, is taped in front of a live audience and features performances from some of the country’s top musical artists as well as conversation and information on environmental issues and other community-action topics.

KLIPSAN – Peninsula Senior Activity Center is holding a garage sale and hot dog extravaganza from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 25. Donations are now being accepted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. Donations may include clean and useable clothing, household goods, antiques and jewelry. Antiques and special items are gratefully accepted. Unfortunately, they are not able to accept National Geographic and Reader’s Digest books, clothing with stains or tears, ski equipment, non-working electrical items, any type of computer monitors, printers or typewriters. Salad luncheon

NASELLE – Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 25, for the annual Salad Luncheon held at the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Old Knappton Road. With a $6 donation, the luncheon will provide an array of salads to tempt the most discerning appetites. Black Lake derby

ILWACO – The 17th Annual Black Lake Fishing Derby, a kid-only trout catching extravaganza at the well-stocked Black Lake is set for April 25 from 7 a.m. to noon. Children 14 years old and under will be able to participate in a variety of contests and activities with prizes awarded by age group for the biggest catch, highest aggregate weight ratio of the participant to fish and more. There is no cost to participate and no license is required.

Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on April 25 through April 27, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. Low tides those days are as follows: Saturday, April 25, 8:33 a.m. -0.8; Sunday, April 26, 9:16 a.m. -1.1; Monday, April 27, 10:02 a.m. -1.2. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

ASTORIA – The Clatsop County Women’s Resource Center (WRC), in conjunction with Clatsop Community College, will hold its annual fundraiser – the Community Soup Bowl on Thursday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the “Red Building,” located at 20 Basin Street in front of the Cannery Pier Hotel. Those attending can buy a one-of-a-kind, kiln or wood-fired bowl of their choice commemorating this event to take home. Tickets are $30 for soup and a bowl and may be purchased in advance at Lucy’s Books, the Déjà Vu Thrift Shop, the Cannon Beach and Seaside Chambers of Commerce and the WRC office. ILWACO – The Loyalty Days kid’s parade is Saturday, May 2 at noon in downtown Ilwaco. Come enjoy this great parade and support kids. After the parade head to the Ilwaco boat basin at the Port of Ilwaco. Boats leave the dock at 1 p.m. for the blessing of the fleet. The memorial service includes a free scenic boat ride.

Oyster feed

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks Club is hosting an oyster feed from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 as part of the week’s Loyalty Days event. This event is open to the public. The honors banquet will be held at the lodge that same evening. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., enjoy the social hour and then dinner at 7 p.m. The guest speaker is Jim Getty aka Abraham Lincoln. Loyalty Day

LONG BEACH – Sunday, May 3, the day starts with a cowboy breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Peninsula Saddle Grounds on Sandridge Road. For a minimal fee you will get a great breakfast. Then kids can enjoy a ride on a fire truck from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the new Ilwaco fire hall. The main events of the day start at noon in downtown Long Beach with guest speaker Jim Getty aka Abraham Lincoln. At 1 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard flyover starts the parade. Circus in town

LONG BEACH – The Culpepper Merriwether Circus is coming on March 25. Hosted by the Lions Club, the circus will be set up just south of the Bolstad approach in a lot on the dunes. NW Garlic Festival

OCEAN PARK – The 28th Annual Northwest Garlic Festival sponsored by the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is coming June 20 and 21. This year the event will be held on Wilson Field, also known as the Beach Barons Rod Run Field. This will allow off-street parking and more space for the vendors and entertainment.
