Play auditions

ILWACO  The Peninsula Players will be holding auditions for their upcoming play, All I Really Needed To Know I Learned In Kindergarten, on Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m., at The River City Playhouse located at 127 Lake in Ilwaco. Summer expo

RAYMOND The Grays Harbor College Riverview Education Center, at 600 Washington Avenue in Raymond, will host its second annual Summer Expo on Thursday, May 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a plant sale, food, live music, arts and crafts, demonstrations and various informational booths. The plant show will feature one-gallon pots of tomatoes and strawberries, in addition to a vast variety of bedding plants. Other activities will include a bicycle rodeo for children, a free child safety seat inspection conducted by the Target Zero Task Force and more. Admission is free and parking is plentiful. Disaster relief truck

ILWACO On Thursday, May 30, a disaster relief truck will come to the Green Dragonfly thrift store at 110 Lake Street in Ilwaco (the red shop building) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The truck will be there to pick up donations of used and useful household items, which will be delivered to areas in Oklahoma affected by the recent tornado.

Cooperative learning

LONG BEACH  On May 30 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., come find out what 4-H in Pacific County is up to! They practice child-led learning, nurturing to care for the heart, head, health and hands through individual interests such as native foods, animal husbandry, entrepreneurship, archery, cooking, gardening, robotics, shooting, sewing the opportunities for growth are expansive! Bob Milne concert

LONG BEACH World famous ragtime and boogie-woogie piano player Bob Milne is returning to the World Kite Museum on May 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. You wont want to miss this outstanding musician. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, with seating on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 6 p.m. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the World Kite Museum. Shoalwater Library sale

TOKELAND  Shoalwater Bay Tribal Community Library is having an all-day book sale Friday, May 31. There are lots of books donated for the sale, and the library offers computer use, DVDs, CDs and books on tape for those who travel to and from work. Plus they have comfy chairs to read in, an ear to listen and many interesting books, not to mention their Native American collection. They also offer adult, juvenile, young adult, childrens, fiction and nonfiction books. Their hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed on the weekends. Relay Zumba Dance Fundraiser

SOUTH BEND  Relay For Life Team Bubbas Bison is having a Zumba dance fundraiser on Friday, May 31 at the DSHS building in South Bend. The gold class is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the basic class is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is a $5 donation. No experience necessary everyone is welcome including children. 125 Years of Rail

ILWACO  The opening reception for From the Water to the Woods: 125 Years of Rail is set for May 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. On July 19, 1888, the Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Company held a grand celebration commemorating the completion of its line from Ilwaco to Long Beach. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Clamshell Railroad the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum has organized this exhibit. Plant clinic & more

ILWACO The Master Gardeners of Pacific County will lead a mulch and weed suppression workshop on Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the hands-on practice on weed control methods is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own pair of durable garden gloves. Dress for the weather and bring your own lunch. If you have plant questions or problems, come ask a master gardener at this clinic. If possible bring samples of your plant problem. Relay for Life Kick-Off

SEAVIEW  From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., on June 1, come to the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place for the Relay for Life 2013 kick-off event. There will be a free pancake breakfast, and you can get registered as a survivor, volunteer, sponsor and team. Plus you will learn about Relay for Life, why the Relay, where the money goes and more, and there will be tools and materials available to help your team raise money. WASHINGTON Washington State Parks is honoring the 100th birthday of the park system by allowing free days with no Discover Pass required. They include June 1 (National Trails Day); June 8 and June 9 (National Get Outdoors Day); Aug. 4; Sept. 28 and Nov. 9 through Nov. 11.

Beaches, Bogs & Bays

LONG BEACH  Northwest Artist Guild is proud to announce their June First Saturday Art Show and reception at Gallery 504 North, located in the Peninsula Performing Arts Center at 504 N Pacific in Long Beach. The event is June 1 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and features artist Wes Moehnke, who will be showing his watercolors depicting his view of the Beaches, Bogs & Bays of Pacific County. Wes utilizes both his engineering skills and artistry to render wonderful, often monochromatic, watercolor paintings of old logging equipment, trains and life. Its his way of paying tribute to and keeping alive the lives and memories of the past. Please stop in to meet Wes and take a moment to appreciate his art. Other guild members and artists will also have work on display. All art on display is being offered for sale.

OCEAN PARK An ecumenical baccalaureate service for the graduating class of 2013 of Ilwaco High School will be held at the Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 2. Family members and friends are also invited to attend. A reception will follow.

Circus in town

LONG BEACH The circus is coming to town. There will be two performances on Sunday, June 2, one at 2 p.m. and one at 4 p.m. Watch for more details about getting your ticket early. This event is sponsored by the Long Beach Lions Club.

The Bible

OCEAN PARK Family Worship Center is hosting The Bible: 30-Day Church Experience beginning June 2 at 6 p.m. at 264th and Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. Services will be held each Sunday night. Photography Show

ILWACO  Grays Harbor College is hosting an art show at their Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco on Friday, June 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The center is located at 208 Advent Ave SE in Ilwaco. The show will feature digital photographs by instructor James Unwin and students in the Digital Photo class. These photos are a small representation of the quality work produced by the Grays Harbor College students. Each term, students are given the basics of how to use their equipment, photographic techniques, and photo editing software. The students hone their photographic skills with a different photographic assignment each week, among them being photographing water in its many forms, capturing textures, and doing close ups. North Head L/H celebration

CAPE D  On Saturday, June 8, all are invited to Cape Disappointment State Park to help celebrate the 115th birthday of the North Head Lighthouse, the 100th anniversary of Washington State Parks, and the transfer of the title to the lighthouse from the Coast Guard to Washington State Parks. The celebration, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 8 will feature food and refreshments, speeches by dignitaries and a ribbon-cutting at the lighthouse at noon, activities for children, self-guided tours of a Lighthouse Keepers Residence, the North Head gift store, a small museum with a specially designed history exhibit about the lighthouse, and tours of the lighthouse. Cost of the lighthouse tours is $2.50 for adults, and children from ages 7 to 17 are free (children must be at least 7 to go up in the lighthouse tower). June 8 is a Parks no-fee entrance day. As parking is somewhat limited, a van will take visitors to the lighthouse parking lot from the Cape Disappointment campground store parking lot. For more information, please call 642-3029.

Golf tournament

SURFSIDE Surfside will be hosting a Bucket Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8, at the Surfside Golf Course at 31508 J Place in Ocean Park. The entry fee is $50 per player, and includes an 18-hole green fee, lunch, prizes and a hat for each entrant. Players can sign up as a team or as an individual and be placed with a group. Four person scramble with registration is at 9 a.m., Shot Gun start at 10 a.m. Rental carts are available but you need to call 665-4148 to reserve yours. Net proceeds will go to the 2013 Surfside Scholarship Fund to benefit a graduating Ilwaco High School senior. Waikiki Beach concert

ILWACO At 7 p.m., on June 8, the public is invited to Cape Disappointment State Parks Waikiki Beach for a concert. Performers will be Polecat, a band formed in Bellingham. Polecat has quickly established itself throughout the West, with three records and over 300 shows in three years. Their unique instrumentation is comprised of Karl Olson (drums), Jeremy Elliott (electric guitar and vocals), Aaron Guest (vocals and 12-string guitar), Cayley Schmid (fiddle), and Richard Reeves (upright bass). This enables them to seamlessly blend genres including bluegrass, country, celtic, rock, and world music into their sound. Their music celebrates life, love, and good times, and it reflects on the faces of the players and their audience. MENLO  The board of Pacific County Commissioners will be holding a community forum on Tuesday, June 11, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Willapa Valley High School Commons at 22 Viking Way in Menlo. This will be the second of 11 community forums to be held throughout the county. The commissioners will take questions and address important issues for Pacific County and the surrounding region. KLIPSAN  The Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. Golf Tournament & dinner

LONG BEACH On June 15, there will be a golf tournament and seafood dinner, sponsored by the Long Beach Elks to benefit the Backpacks 4-Kids program, at Peninsula Golf Course. NW Garlic Festival

OCEAN PARK  The 32nd Annual Northwest Garlic Festival runs June 15 and June 16 in Ocean Park. Located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road, the venue has three sides bordered by evergreen trees with the fourth side providing glimpses of Willapa Bay. Vendors and artisans may register for a booth through the OPACCs website, www.opwa.com, the festivals website http://garlic.aisol.com or by stopping in at the Chamber office Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1715 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. A 10×10 site costs $100 for the two-day, outdoor event. Sites with electricity run $125. There are discounts for multiple spaces and the deadline to register and pay is May 23, or until all spaces are filled. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Chinook Nation meeting

CHINOOK  The Chinook Indian Nation will be holding their annual General Council meeting on Saturday, June 15, at the Chinook School Gym in Chinook.
