OCEAN PARK – The Friends of the Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Friday, May 28, Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and 50 cents for regular-size paper. If you have donations of gently used books bring them to either library so they can be sorted prior to the sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Libraries.

Benefit dinner

SEAVIEW – South Pacific County Technical Rescue Team is holding a benefit dinner and raffle on Friday, May 28 at 6 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview. Enjoy vegetarian and regular lasagna, garden salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverages catered by surf rescue team member Vinessa Mulinix. Cost is $10 per person and $7 for children (ages four to nine). Raffle tickets for great prizes will be $1 each. Join the team for great food and fun – you might even win a raffle prize! The surf and cliff rescue teams are a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. Proceeds from this event will help buy equipment needed to continue to provide beach safety and rescue responses for our community and those who visit our community.

“Hello, Dolly!”

CHINOOK – The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) is pleased to announce that they will be performing the musical comedy “Hello, Dolly!” at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, May 28; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 29 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. The performances will be held in the refurbished auditorium at Fort Columbia, which sits over the tunnel between Chinook and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Tickets will be on sale at Okie’s Thriftway and Stormin’ Norman’s. Cost of the tickets is $15. New special ticket price for students is only $5! This play was a great success on Broadway. It starred Carol Channing, and won 10 Tony Awards. In 2002 the “Hello, Dolly!” original cast recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was made into a movie in 1969 – it follows the adventures of Dolly, America’s most beloved matchmaker. PAPA invites all in the community to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a play with a cast of 30 local talented residents.

“Tut, Tut, Tutsy”

ILWACO – Peninsula Players presents “Tut, Tut, Tutsy” at 7 p.m., on May 28 and May 29 and at 2 p.m., on May 30. The mummy of King Tut is on the loose and wants his liver back. After business tycoon Mortimer Tutley purchases an urn containing King Tut’s liver, he receives a threatening note from King Tut demanding the liver back. To make matters worse, greedy relatives, all of whom want a piece of his fortune, surround Tutley. Twists and turns abound before anyone can unwrap this mystery. Tickets are just $10.

SummerFest events

LONG BEACH – SummerFest events, hosted by the city of Long Beach, are underway again beginning Friday May 28 and continuing all weekend long. There will be horse and wagon rides, face painting as well as kids games and crafts available for free. And don’t miss Mother Goose, who will be gandering around downtown. Long Beach Clean Sweep

LONG BEACH – It’s time to clean up that yard, attic, or garage! From Friday, May 28 through Monday, May 31, Long Beach citizens who have a city of Long Beach residential water account can bring both yard waste and household junk to containers located at the old county building on 2nd Street Northeast. Don’t bring anything bigger than you are, or there won’t be room for anything else, and you will be turned away. Residential water users should have received a flyer and a coupon in the mail, which is intended to help defray the cost to dispose of larger items. If you didn’t get a flyer in the mail, come by city hall and pick one up. Columbia River Reflections

SKAMOKAWA – Columbia River Reflections, an exhibition portraying the Columbia River from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean runs through July 11 at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. It includes works created for the show by Rachael Wolford, a local artist well-known for her use of watercolors and ink. Bingo!

LONG BEACH – The Elks has bingo every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. The 15-game program includes a Texas blackout and a progressive $250 blackout. Snacks and pull-tabs are available. The public is welcome. Elks bingo proceeds fund the Washington State Tall Elks Therapy program.

Memorial Day Observances

PENINSULA – On Monday, May 31, the American Legion and Auxiliary Don R. Grable Post and Unit No. 48 will observe Memorial Day. Observances will begin with raisings of the American Flag at Oysterville Cemetery at 8:45 a.m., at Ocean Park Cemetery at 9:15 a.m. and at Lone Fir Cemetery at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., the main program at the Ilwaco Cemetery will be held, followed by a program at the Black Lake Memorial in Ilwaco. Lunch will be served at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco after the Black Lake Memorial observance is concluded. The main dishes, coleslaw and dessert will be provided, and guests are asked to bring salads. Holiday closures

PENINSULA – All city, county and state offices, plus the banks and credit unions will be closed on Monday, May 31 for the Memorial Day holiday. The Chinook Observer will be closed that day also, but will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1. There are early deadlines for the June 2 edition, so call if you have questions.

HAMMOND – ENCORE is an association of retirement-age people who share a love of learning. They meet for lunch the first Tuesday of every month. “Goonies” abound

ASTORIA – June 4 through June 7, the city of Astoria is hosting a series of events in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the filming of ‘The Goonies.” Several original cast members will be in attendance including Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Joe Pantoliano and Curt Hanson. On Friday, June 4, stars will meet fans and sign autographs. After the dinner there will be a screening of “The Goonies” along with a documentary about the film. On Saturday and Sunday, in addition to regular showings of the film, enjoy bus tours of original filming sites including an interior tour of the house. SKAMOKAWA – On June 5 at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds, the public is encouraged to come to the Dollars for Scholars fundraising day. There will be a fishing derby with weigh-in from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. A salmon and chicken barbecue will be served from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the barbecue is just $8 for adults and $5 for youth 10 years old and younger. Boater education class

ILWACO – From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on June 5, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is holding a class to assist attendees in obtaining the required Washington state Boater Education card. These cards are required for anyone who is 30 years old or younger who plans to operate a boat. The cost is $25, and pre-registration is requested. LONG BEACH – The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Peninsula Bunco Club and the Chautauqua Lodge are hosting the Second Annual Bunco for Breast Cancer at 6 p.m., on Saturday, June 12 at the Chautauqua Lodge. Donations for game prizes, a silent auction and raffle drawings are welcome. Come and enjoy playing bunco to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s efforts to provide free mammograms, other cancer screening, and breast cancer research. Trashcan Joe

ILWACO – Another season of the Waikiki Beach Concert Series opens on June 12 at 2 p.m., at Cape Disappointment State Park. The first performers are a group named “Trashcan Joe,” who plays original old-timey jazz, ragtime and blues on traditional as well as home-made instruments such as the Trashcanjo, washboard, tuborgan and many more. This concert is free and one you don’t want to miss it.

Auto Show ‘N Shine

OCEAN PARK – From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on June 12, Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 24002 “U” Street is hosting their Third Annual Auto Show ‘N Shine car show to benefit the Community Table. The Community Table is a ministry of Ocean Park Lutheran Church, Ocean Park Methodist Church and Peninsula Baptist Church. Free, hot meals are prepared and offered every Monday. This car show is open to the public. All are invited, young and old. There is a $2 entry fee for those wishing to enter their vehicle. All motorized vehicles are welcome. OCEAN PARK – North Peninsula Improvement Association (NPIA) is holding their annual meeting starting at 6 p.m., on Monday, June 14, at the Ocean Park fire hall. The purpose of this meeting is to elect a board of directors and officers. Members must have their annual dues of $10 paid up to date in order to vote. Membership is open to owners of property located north of Cranberry Road. NPIA has initiated community improvements as well as the North Beach Water District and the Beach To Bay Trail.
