Free tax help

OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2010 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., through April 13. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2010), plus a copy of all 2009 tax records/return. Housing Authority

LONG BEACH On Feb. 24 at    10 a.m., the next meeting of the Joint Pacific County Housing Authority will be held at Long Beach City Hall. 

Spruce Logging Division 

ILWACO On Thursday, Feb. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco will present a lecture by noted historian Bryan Penttila. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition WWI Posters: On the Home Front, the evening will begin with a donut and coffee reception and an opportunity to view the exhibition. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m., in the museums main hall. The Spruce Production Division was established in 1917 as a unit of the U.S. Army to supply them with high quality spruce and other wood products needed for the production of combat aircraft and ships for the United States war effort.  From the beginning of World War I, wood products were in great demand for war production. Sitka spruce was the most important tree species because its combination of lightness, strength and resiliency was ideal for aircraft production. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to          4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to        4 p.m. Admission on Thursdays is free thanks to sponsorship by the Ilwaco Merchants Association.

Adult Family Home mtg

HOQUIAM On Thursday, Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Grays Harbor YMCA will host a meeting for the public to learn what it takes to open an adult family home for seniors and people with disabilities in our region. Line dancing

LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road.  Dancing for beginners starts at        5:30 p.m., intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor at 1 p.m. and again 6:30 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. PENINSULA The Peninsula Arts Association presents a change of artwork around the peninsula. At the Pacific County building are photographs by Bonnie Cozby and mixed media artwork created by Sharon Strong. OBH support group

ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Got Talent!

ILWACO After intense auditions, there will be a three-day competition of The Peninsulas Got Talent at the new Peninsula Players River City Theater at 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. There will be 10 performers on Friday, Feb. 26 beginning at 7 p.m.; 10 performers on Saturday, Feb. 27 at        7 p.m.; with the combined top 10 performing again on Sunday, Feb. 28 at      2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for each day or get a three-day pass for $25.  Tickets are on sale at the Imperial Schooner in Ilwaco and Okies Thriftway in Ocean Park.

Chorale to perform

ASTORIA On Feb. 26 the North Coast Chorale is inviting the community to an evening of music, comedy, a silent auction and refreshments at the Performing Arts Center at 16th and Franklin streets. The doors will open at 6 p.m. for early viewing of auction items. The music begins at 7 p.m. Members of the chorale will sing, dance and have a good time entertaining all. The purpose of the event is to raise funds to finish payment on new risers locally crafted by Todd Reed of All Metal Fabrications. No tickets will be sold. Donations will be appreciated.

Writing workshop

SEAVIEW On Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the public is invited to a writing workshop at the Souwester Lodge in Seaview. The theme is Rocking with the Muse and will be led by writer and teacher Keith Eisner, who has more than 40 years of experience in writing poems, essays and short stories. Pre-register by calling 642-2542. The workshop is free to guests of the SouWester, otherwise the cost is $35 with proceeds going to charity. Bring a pen, notebook and brown bag lunch and enjoy a great day.

Low blow concert

ASTORIA The Astoria Tuba Quartet will present a concert of jazz and familiar standards from the American songbook at 3 p.m., Feb. 27 at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center at 16th and Franklin streets in Astoria. Included on the program are two original jazz compositions written by tenor tuba player, Bob Joiner, as well as several of his jazz arrangements. Other area composers featured on the program include an arrangement by the late Norm Poulshock of Ilwaco and a composition by Rockaway composer David Robertson. Other members of the Astoria Tuba Quartet include Bob Joiner, Brian Bergman and Lee Stromquist. Admission is $10; tickets are available in advance at Bach n Rock or at the door. Cooking class

LONG BEACH On Mondays, Feb. 28, March 7, March 14 and March 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., come to a cooking class on the advantages of a vegetarian diet. The classes are offered free of charge at the Long Beach Seventh-day Adventist Church at 2707 Pacific Ave., North in Long Beach, and include demonstrations and tasting. Backpack ministry

OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Ilwaco and Long Beach are seeking donations of money or various food items in individual serving sizes to put in backpacks to send home with needy children in our community who dont have food to eat on the weekends. Some of the items needed include: V-8 juice or 100 percent orange juice, hot chocolate, oatmeal, cold cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, muffins, bagels, bread, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, fruit cups, canned fruit, fresh fruit, chili, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese singles, Top Ramen, ravioli, soups, raisins, pudding cups, applesauce, string cheese and similar. Relay for Life

Peninsula Pun-Off

ILWACO Attend and/or participate in the first Peninsula Pun-Off, to be held on Sunday, March 6, from       1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Laugh as punsligners play with words, enjoy the silent auction, refreshments, door prizes and more all to benefit the Water Music Festival. The silent auction and social hour is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the contest from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is designed to draw punsters from far and wide. Agatha Christie mystery

RAYMOND The Willapa Players will open their production of The Hollow by famed mystery author Agatha Christie on Friday, March 11. A gala champagne opening, sponsored by the Raymond Kiwanis Club, will be held prior to the show. Tickets, at $9 each, are available from any member of that organization. Curtain time is     7:30 p.m. at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. Willapa Players veteran actors Tena Boggs, Jenny Allan, Scott Cowell, Mike Williams, Dotsi Graves, Jim White, Gracie Manlow and Dani Massin are joined by a couple of outstanding newcomers Shawn Friese and Bob Parks. Parks, who was formerly active with the Driftwood Players in Aberdeen, returns to the stage after an absence of a number of years. Completing the cast are two young adults Kelly Rockett and Rebecca Manlow who got their start in the Willapa Players Summer Youth Theater productions. Additional performances are scheduled for Friday, March 18; Saturday, March 19; Friday, March 25; Saturday, March 26, and a Sunday matinee on March 27. Tickets for other shows are $8 and are available at South Bend Pharmacy, Everybodys Video and More in Raymond, and at the door the evening of the performance.

Empty Bowl project

SEAVIEW Students of the Ocean Beach School District, artists with Peninsula Arts Association and Peninsula Clay Artists and other Peninsula groups are creating handmade bowls to be sold at the 3rd Annual Empty Bowls Project, set for noon to 2 p.m., March 12, at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Come to the event, select your bowl and for $10 each get the bowl filled with soup that has been prepared and donated by local restaurants, chefs and bakers. Money raised this year goes to Peninsula F.I.S.H., His Supper Table and Community Table. For additional information call 642-3115.

SmileMobile

LONG BEACH The Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile will be in Long Beach from March 14 to March 18 to provide dental care to children from low-income families. The SmileMobile will be located at Head Start at 2611 N. Pacific Hwy, in Long Beach. Children birth through high school with limited access to care can be scheduled by calling Terry Bryan at the Ocean Beach Early Childhood Center before March 14 at 642-4089. A clinic manager, dentist and dental assistant, and teams of local volunteer dental professionals from the community staff the SmileMobile. Examinations will be conduct on Monday, March 14 from     12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, March 15 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Follow-up treatment appointments will be scheduled on a space available basis for the duration of the stay. Medicaid and sliding scale fee is accepted as reimbursement for services.

RFL Rally & Pancake Feed

LONG BEACH The Long Beach Relay for Life will be hosting a free pancake breakfast on Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chautauqua Lodge meeting room, 304 14th Street NW in Long Beach. Stop in to enjoy a free breakfast and to meet your 2011 Long Beach Relay for Life team. This event will highlight the local relay in June and will share some of the exciting activities that are planned. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet some local cancer survivors. Donations will be gladly accepted at the breakfast, but are most definitely not required.

AAUW tea

LONG BEACH The Willapa Chapter of the AAUW will present the annual Treasures of Time Tea Saturday, March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. This year celebrates National Womens History month with a presentation representing Mary Ann Dickenson Adair, Marilla Washburn Bailley, and Bethenia Owens-Adair, three pioneer women of the Northwest, their stories and experiences in a conversation onstage while high tea is enjoyed by the audience. AAAUW scholarship awards to local high school women will be presented, as well as a musical performance by Pat Donnelly, a former recipient of an AAUW scholarship. Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for children 12 and under, and are available at Okies Thriftway, Sweet Williams, Long Beach Pharmacy or at AAUW, P.O. Box 385 Long Beach WA 98631. All proceeds go to AAUW Young Womens Scholarship Fund for Ilwaco High School.

Free CPR

OCEAN PARK Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and the Ocean Park Eagles Auxiliary are working together to provide CPR training to the community for free. The class will teach you how to recognize a heart attack and what you can do to help save someones life. The event is funded by grant monies secured by the Eagles Auxiliary, and the fire district provides instructors certified by the American Heart Association. The class will be held on Thursday, March 31 at 10 a.m., at 1412 262nd Place in Ocean Park. Please call Suzy at 665-6688 to reserve a space in the class.

Scholarship applications

OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle/Grays River School districts. Graduating seniors, planning to pursue an education in the arts, are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be home schooled locally.  Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply.  Application deadline is April 15. Farmers Market volunteers

LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. PC Democrats Scholarships

PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Democrats will award up to two $500 scholarships to Pacific County high school graduates. Home-schooled graduates are also encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated on four weighted qualifications: Academic achievement (types of classes as well as overall grade point average); political, school and community activism (leadership and participation); financial need; and relationship to, or sponsorship by, a Pacific County Democrat club member.  Scholarships will be paid at the completion of the first term of school, following reception of an official college transcript showing satisfactory completion, and must be used within one academic year unless an extension is requested and approved. Application packets are available through the scholarship advisor at all county high schools and can also be found on the PCD website, www.pacificcountydemocrats.com. Applications should be completed and returned to the PCD, P.O. Box 455, South Bend, WA 98586 and must be postmarked no later than May 1.
