Line dancing

LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road.  Dancing for beginners starts at 5:30 p.m., intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor at 1 p.m. and again 6:30 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Heart to Heart lunch

ILWACO Cardiologist Dr. Diana Rinkevich, from OHSU, will be one of three speakers at the annual Womens Heart to Heart lunch, Feb. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to    2:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. One Heart at a Time is the theme of this years forum, which focuses on the unique health issues women face.  The event is co-sponsored by Ocean Beach Hospital Auxiliary and Gift Shop, and Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. In addition to Dr. Rinkevich, other speakers will include Gwen Meyer, ARNP, from the Naselle Clinic; and Susie Fisher, RN, the regional program manager of the Providence Stroke Center in Portland. The permits are free, and can be picked up at the following locations: Ocean Park fire station, Seaview fire station, Jacks Country Store, Surfside Homeowners Association office, Pioneer Market and Seaview One Stop. Asian New Year celebration

LONG BEACH The World Kite Museum on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach is hosting an Asian New Year Celebration on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6. Thai people from the Asian Cultural Center in Tacoma will be on hand to present stories about elephants and Thai dancing at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, plus dont miss the Thai dancing and Thai boxing demonstrations on Saturday. On Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., there will be a presentation about the giant catfish of the Mekong River of Thailand. Both days will feature videos of kite fighting and kite making in Thailand, plus continuous classes teaching snake and fish kite making for those nine years old and older. WWI Posters

ILWACO Until March 12, the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco is presenting the exhibition World War I Posters: On the Home Front, which explores the war through an exceptional collection of 36 lithographic posters that were made to influence Americans support of the war. Travel workshop

LONG BEACH On Feb. 7, the city of Long Beach will host a package travel workshop with Mark Hofman, a package travel professional with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. Hofman will discuss the concept of package travel, why a business may want to participate in the opportunity, and how to work with destination market organizations and tour operators. ILWACO Grays Harbor College is offering a one-day course entitled, Savvy Social Security and Medicare Planning at the Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco on Monday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Instructor Sandra Hay Magdaleno will teach what everyone needs to know to maximize retirement income and the important rules and strategies for collecting retirement benefits and coordinating Social Security with other sources of income. Hazard sirens testing

SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, Feb. 7, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15-second verbal message stating, This is a test of the Emergency Management Agency Tsunami Warning System.  This is only a test.  The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Kiss away cancer

LONG BEACH As a fundraiser for the upcoming Relay for Life of the Long Beach Peninsula, the Chinook Observer needs your vote for its Kiss Away Cancer contest. Drop by the Chinook Observer office at 205 East Bolstad Avenue in Long Beach during business hours Monday through Friday, and drop your cash donation in the container belonging to the Observer employee that youd like to see kiss a crab: Nancy Butterfield, Amanda Frink, Cate Gable, Kevin Heimbigner, Damian Mulinix, Marlene Quillin, Andrew Renwick or Matt Winters. Due to an outpour of concern from the community, an account was recently set up in her name at the Bank of Pacific to help with medical expenses.

NASELLE At 1:30 p.m., on Feb. 13, Willapa Bay pioneer James G. Swan will come to life at the annual meeting of the Pacific County Historical Society on at the Naselle-Grays River High School as living history actor Stephen Ricketts presents Life and Times on the Northwest Coast: The Story of Judge James G. Swan was a pioneer and promoter who in 1852 settled at the mouth of Bear River between what is now South Bend and Bay Center. In addition to leading an accomplished life, Swan meticulously documented his experiences with early Northwest pioneer society and Northwest Indian life before and after settlers arrived on the scene. This event is open to the public and follows the annual Deep River American Legion Auxiliary Valentine Smorgasbord.

Beach Pets Breakfast

LONG BEACH On Saturday, Feb. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon, there will be a breakfast at the Long Beach Elks Lodge to benefit the South Pacific County Humane Society. Sound Of Music auditions

CHINOOK Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will be performing The Sound Of Music and is holding auditions for all the roles from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Feb. 19 and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Feb. 20 at Fort Columbia. With as many as 26 roles to fill, (from Maria to the strong willed Captain Von Trapp and his many friends in the community and his wealthy fiancée, the Baroness Elsa Schrader), there are many needs and opportunities for those who love theatre to become involved. In Their Footsteps

FORT CLATSOP Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop is pleased to announce the next In Their Footsteps free speaker series event. This program features the Wildlife Center of the North Coast and is presented by Sharnelle Fee and some of their volunteer staff on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. This is part of a weekend of activities held nationwide in conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count led by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Laugh as punsligners play with words, enjoy the silent auction, refreshments, door prizes and more all to benefit the Water Music Festival. Farmers Market volunteers

LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September.
