Free CPR

OCEAN PARK Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and the Ocean Park Eagles Auxiliary are working together to provide CPR training to the community for free. A CPR class will teach you how to recognize a heart attack and what you can do to help save someones life. Grant monies secured by the Eagles Auxiliary fund the event, and the fire district provides instructors certified by the American Heart Association. WellSpring grants

PACIFIC COUNTY WellSpring Community Network is currently accepting applications for mini-grant activities from groups who serve children and/or families in the Long Beach Peninsula or Naselle communities. Past grants have been awarded for parenting enrichment classes, summer band camp, basketball camp, and youth adventure programs, among many others. Awards range between $50 and $500, on average. Line dancing

LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Through the summer, dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Thrift store

ILWACO On March 31, a large relief truck will come to the Green Dragonfly thrift store (107 Lake Street in Ilwaco) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The truck will be there to pick up used and useful household item donations, which will be delivered to areas directly affected by natural disasters. Please bring all donations to the shop the day before.

Tsunami forums

PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) is hosting a series of Lets Talk tsunami community forums throughout Pacific County. There will be a question and answer session about the recent tsunami advisory event as well as a chance to give community input regarding tsunami evacuation routes, assembly areas, and signage. DivorceCare

OCEAN PARK DivorceCare is a weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. Its a place where you can be around people who understand what you are feeling and where you can hear valuable information about ways to heal from the hurt of divorce. PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association has something to brighten your day three local artists are showcasing some of their work during March and April. At Ilwaco Library are paintings from Joan Taplin, at Ocean Beach Hospital enjoy paintings by Judy Leonard and Aileen Roberts, and at the county building on Sandridge Road are paintings from Jean Nitzel and Ruth Carpenter.

Fantasticks weekend

ILWACO Tickets are on sale for Peninsula Players presentation of The Fantasticks, book and lyrics by Tom Jones, music by Harvey Schmidt. Art Show & Sale

LONG BEACH Peninsula Arts Association announces the 20th Annual Spring Art Show and Sale, April 1 to April 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the World Kite Museum located at 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Over 40 artists compete in 25 possible categories during this show. In addition, Inspired Creations shopping experience, featuring art and art inspired work for same-day purchase, allows even more art from the exhibiting artists to be on view. An art raffle of donated work benefits the PAA High School Graduate Scholarship Fund and the Art Enrichment Program. Redmen Hall exhibit

SKAMOKAWA Redmen Halls new exhibit is an antique exhibit and sale run by archivist Keith Hoofnagle. This is a collection of antiques not exhibited before with many of them for sale. This exhibit will run for Thursdays through Sundays. Then opening on April 9 and running through May 23 will an exhibit by artist Patrick Carrico, who is working in Cathlamet schools as a therapist for children at risk. He describes his work as utilizing found art supplies, creating his pallet from building supplies, cast off house paint and traditional fine art media to create a sincere visualization of the world around him as it is from what it is. Oysters and Art

ILWACO Peninsula Rotary is presenting their 6th Annual Oysters & Art Fundraiser on April 2, at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Oysters & Art is a benefit for youth programs, including the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula, the Family Health Center at North Beach childrens dentistry program and the Peninsula Arts Associations Youth Scholarship Program, along with a small portion allocated to our International projects. In addition to the silent and live auctions, there will be delicacies from our areas top restaurants, great entertainment, exciting balloon popping and just an all around good time for everyone. Ducks Unlimited Banquet

ASTORIA The 34th annual banquet of the North Coast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be held on Saturday, April 2, at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event includes a fine dinner, live and silent auctions and assorted raffles and games of chance. Wildlife art, carved decoys, firearms and useful merchandise are featured. About 30 guns will be auctioned or given away. Regular ticket price is $45.  Special ticket packages are available for youths, significant others and sponsors. All tickets include the dinner, DU membership and magazine and a chance at the door prize gun. Backpack ministry

OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Ilwaco and Long Beach are seeking donations of money or various food items in individual serving sizes to put in backpacks to send home with needy children in our community who dont have food to eat on the weekends. Some of the items needed include: V-8 juice or 100 percent orange juice, hot chocolate, oatmeal, cold cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, muffins, bagels, bread, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, fruit cups, canned fruit, fresh fruit, chili, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese singles, Top Ramen, ravioli, soups, raisins, pudding cups, applesauce, string cheese and similar. Clamming

 

PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on April 7 through April 9, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Thursday, April 7, 10:38 a.m. 0.2; Friday, April 8, 11:17 a.m. 0.3; Saturday, April 9, 11:58 a.m. 0.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

 

Casper Babypants

RAYMOND Pacific Countys Know and Grow Early Learning Coalition presents Casper Babypants live in concert at the Raymond Theater on Saturday, April 9, at 11 a.m. Chris Ballew, best known as the frontrunner for rock band the Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA), is Casper Babypants and has created a huge following with the preschool set with his hooky, cool and authentic pop. PACIFIC COUNTY April 9 has been designated Lower Columbia Hometown Tourism Day. Local residents and guests are invited to visit nearby attractions and rediscover our own wonderful history and recreational opportunities. On this day, Cape Disappointment State Park and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, Fort Columbia State Park and Knappton Cove Heritage Center are all offering free admission to all exhibits, their grounds and trails. Student art show

ILWACO Students in the Ilwaco High School art department are holding their annual art show set April 12 through April 30 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. This exhibit will show a range of work, from beginning work up through advanced. This is a non-juried show. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the Peoples Choice award in two categories two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork. Museum hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. They are closed on Mondays. Please stop by and support IHS art!

Alzheimer support

LONG BEACH Alzheimers Association caregiver support group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. The group is designed to provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are providing care to a person with dementia. Free Kindergarten Seminar

SEAVIEW Parents of children up to five years old are invited to a kindergarten seminar that will provide information about how each child learns, as well as materials and activities for use at home to make learning easy and fun.  Attendees will go home with some wonderful free toys. Parents with kids up to two years old should attend on April 13; parents with kids from two to 4 years old should attend April 20; and those with four and five year old children should attend on April 27. ILWACO Youth leadership helps young people build communication and leadership skills. Local Toastmaster members Jenna Austin and Kelly Jacobsen are hosting a Toastmaster Youth Leadership Program from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., April 13 through May 11. The cost is $10 per person. Scholarship Applications

OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual high school graduate scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle/Grays River School districts. Graduating seniors planning to pursue an education in the arts, are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be home schooled locally.  Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply.  Application deadline is April 15. Beach cleanup & more

PENINSULA The GrassRoots Garbage Gang is spearheading the 28th beach cleanup on Saturday, April 23, celebrating Earth Day. Come to any major beach approach to sign in, get supplies and head for the beach, beginning at 9.30 a.m. As is customary, there will be a potluck supper the night before, on April 22, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan. Debbie Duffield, professor of biology at Portland State University and coordinator of the Northern Oregon/Southern Washington Marine Mammal Stranding Program, will be the speaker. Farmers Market volunteers

LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. PC Democrats Scholarships

PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Democrats will award up to two $500 scholarships to Pacific County high school graduates. Home-schooled graduates are also encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated on four weighted qualifications: Academic achievement (types of classes as well as overall grade point average); political, school and community activism (leadership and participation); financial need; and relationship to, or sponsorship by, a Pacific County Democrat club member.  Scholarships will be paid at the completion of the first term of school, following reception of an official college transcript showing satisfactory completion, and must be used within one academic year unless an extension is requested and approved. Application packets are available through the scholarship advisor at all county high schools and can also be found on the PCD website www.pacificcountydemocrats.com. Application should be completed and returned to the PCD, P.O. Box 455, South Bend, WA 98586 and must be postmarked no later than May 1.
