Artist reception

OCEAN PARK On Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park will host an artists reception for William VanDorin. The public is invited to meet the artist and view his latest work. Patsy Cline tribute

TOKELAND Elizabeth Stierle will perform a tribute to the legendary Patsy Cline beginning at 5 p.m., Sept. 26 in the Shoalwater Bay gym on Elm Street in Tokeland, across from the post office. Stierle has been compared to Cline with her soulful, similar style and heart. She immensely enjoys visiting with folks after the show so please join Stierle for a meet and greet. Accompanying her on guitar, vocals and harmonica is her husband, Paul, who formerly managed and performed with the New Christy Minstrels. Free youth TaeKwon-Do

LONG BEACH Free Youth TaeKwon-Do classes are offered at the Long Beach Elks on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. There are also adult class beginning at 5:30 p.m., which cost $5 per person. Youth classes are free of charge for the foreseeable future. A Korean unarmed martial art, Taekwon-Do increases strength, stamina, flexibility and confidence. Free CERT Training

SURFSIDE  Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course at 31402 H Street, Ocean Park. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 20 participants. Dates of training are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 5. The CERT program is an all-risk, all-hazard training. This valuable course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and your neighborhood in an emergency situation. CERT members receive 20 hours of initial training provided free of charge. The course is taught with classroom instruction for the first two days and practical exercises during the last day. Charles Fitzpatrick exhibit

ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco is hosting an exhibition of photographs and drawings by Charles Fitzpatrick (1884-1971) chronicling over 40 years of visual history on the Long Beach Peninsula. The exhibition will be on view in the museums special exhibition galleries from Sept. 28 through Jan. 5. There will be an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fitzpatricks postcards, photographs and drawings represent the working artist who found inspiration in local subjects. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m., with free admission on Thursdays. Photography & carving exhibit

SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall in Skamokawa is hosting an exhibit by Mike Cullom, a well-known photographer and carver. He recently returned from an extensive trip to Europe with photographs of people and places encountered on that trip, and will also show his beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. This unusually beautiful exhibit runs until Oct. 20, with carving demonstrations most Saturdays. Redmen Hall is open from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday at 1394 SR-4.

Book Reading & Signing

OCEAN PARK Author Nicola Pearson will be at Adelaides Book Store in Ocean Park on Friday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m., for a book reading and signing. How to Make a Pot in 14 Easy Lessons, is the story about Joe, a potter who lives in the Skagit Valley area and has fallen in love with an English actress, Lucy. This event is free and open to the public.

First Aid/CPR

Celebrate Oktoberfest

RAYMOND  The Northwest Carriage Museum is inviting everyone to the fifth annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual event has become a Northwest tradition along the Willapa River. Brats with all the fixings, including fine German beer and one of the best oompahpah bands in the area will be playing. Music, dancing, dining, raffles and fun awaits those who attend. Harvest Fest

RAYMOND  Grays Harbor Colleges Riverview Education Center in Raymond will be hosting a Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be arts and crafts vendors, food, informational booths, entertainment and live music. In addition, there will be a variety of childrens activities and local gardeners are encouraged to bring their excess produce to sell or trade. There is no admission fee and parking is up close and plentiful. The festival will be held outside the Riverview Education Center at 600 Washington Avenue, Raymond. Community meeting

ILWACO  On Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m., in the high school commons there will be a meeting to discuss whether Naselle High School will compete as 1B or 2B for future athletic events. The public is welcome.

Photo contest

ILWACO  The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge second annual photo contest is until Nov. 2. Photos should represent the wildlife and flora native to the refuge or scenic views within the Willapa Refuge areas. First prize is $50, second prize is $30 and third Prize is $20. All three winners receive a free one-year membership to the Friends group with recognition and photos to appear on the Friends Facebook and website. This contest is open to all photographers. Columbia River Country Days

CATHLAMET Friends of Extension and Wahkiakum 4-H present the fifth annual Columbia River Country Days on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. Featured this year are events at the Two Island Farm Market on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. Activities planned there include a pie social to benefit 4-H, Punkin Chunkin sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and plenty of fresh local grown produce for participants to purchase. Also on Friday, the Tsuga Gallery will host an Artoberfest from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. New to the event schedule, members will feature artwork with an autumn theme and refreshments will be provided. Saturday includes a 4-H open house at the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds located in Skamokawa and the Lamplit Dinner on the Grays River Covered Bridge. Tickets are available for the dinner for $35 per person or $25 for our Grand Americans (those 72 and older) and veterans at Bank of Pacific branches in Cathlamet and Naselle, at the Rosburg Store and the WSU Wahkiakum County Extension office at 25 River Street in Cathlamet. Bunco for Breast Cancer

KLIPSAN On Saturday, Oct. 5 the Peninsula Bunco Club is hosting a tournament to help fight breast cancer in our area, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Club in Klipsan. One hundred percent of the proceeds of this event will be used to support programs that allow breast cancer screenings for those individuals who are unable to afford them otherwise. There will be two sessions of bunco that day. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. for the first session which starts at 3 p.m. Then the doors will re-open at 6:30 p.m. for the second session, which starts at 7 p.m. Donations for raffle baskets and a silent auction are needed. Toepfer to exhibit

LONG BEACH The Northwest Artist Guild is pleased to present its October show, featuring local artist, Kent Toepfer. Gallery 504 North will open on Saturday, Oct. 5, starting at noon and running until 5 p.m. Guild members will be present to explain the function of the guild and they will also be exhibiting their works. Light refreshments will be available. Toepfer who has won numerous awards loves interaction between people and many of his paintings and drawings depict humorous moments and facial expressions as well as bright color and texture using collage techniques. The public is encouraged to attend and support our local artists. Gallery 504 North is a functioning adjunct of the Peninsula Performing Arts Center a 503(c-3) non profit corporation which was founded to help support the arts and artists and encourage participation in the arts.

Afternoon with an artist

OCEAN PARK Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park will host an afternoon with artist William VanDorin, from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 6. VanDorin studied cabinetry, metal working, ceramics, masonry, textiles, life drawing, anatomy, watercolor, oils, electronics, computer theory and application and glass blowing. LONG BEACH  The board of Pacific County Commissioners will hold another community forum from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Cranberrian Fair

ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco is the site of the annual Cranberrian Fair set for Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. This event is a celebration of local harvest including all things cranberry. Foods, crafters, bog tours and more will showcase the areas rich heritage. Handmade items and homemade baked goods, including peach/cranberry pies will also be available. Craft demonstrations will include rug hookers and a blacksmith. Cranberrian Fair buttons are $5 and available at the door. Squashtoberfest

RAYMOND Pacific County Senior Center, located at 324 Jackson Street in Raymond, is hosting Squashtoberfest on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come have a cup of hot cider and check out the local vendor tables. Pacific County Senior Center is located at 324 Jackson St., Raymond. Squashtoberfest will have two contests open to the public with cash prizes. A squash dessert contest is one of the highlights of the event. Bring a whole squash dessert and recipe to the contest. Squash must be in the dessert to compete. Dessert sampling will be available to the public. Judging begins at noon and desserts need on site by 11 a.m. The scarecrow contest will have displays set up by contestants, who must bring all their supplies to make a scarecrow. Scarecrows will be displayed until Nov 1 at the senior center. Judging begins at noon so displays must be complete by that time. All ages are invited to participate in both events. There will be a $5 entry fee for each event. Proceeds benefit the Senior Nutrition program. Additionally, vendor tables are available for $15 each. Call 942-5739 for more information.

Chronic disease management

OCEAN PARK  A six-part free chronic disease self-management program workshop will start on Oct. 17 and continue each Thursday through Nov. 21 at the Family Worship Center at 26310 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. Presented by Ocean Beach Hospital, the workshops are offered to encourage those wishing to learn more about how to handle issues related to their chronic disease. Food4 Kids Fundraiser

LONG BEACH On Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a bake and book sale to benefit the Food4Kids program. The bake and book sale will be held at the Chinook Observer office at 205 Bolstad Avenue E, Suite 2. Drop off your book/monetary donations during the week, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or mail to Food4Kids, c/o Chinook Observer, Attention: Marlene, P.O. Box 427, Long Beach, WA 98631. Each week volunteers in the Food4Kids program put together two breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and a pair of mid-morning and mid-afternoon nutritious snacks for the young people to eat on Saturday and Sunday. The food is placed in backpacks Thursday afternoons and the children take them home on Friday. The following Monday the backpacks are returned empty.

International Film Festival

ASTORIA The 2013 Astoria International Film Festival, a world-class film festival now in its seventh year, takes place over the weekend of Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 in Astoria. The festival provides an amazing venue for film buffs and those in pursuit of intellectual adventures to immerse themselves in a thoughtfully curated selection of 15 documentary and dramatic films by regional and international filmmakers. This event is held in a private screening-like setting at the beautifully restored Liberty Theater in historic downtown Astoria. Pumpkins and more

LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon to 5 p.m., the Pumpkin Patch and Myers Cemetery will be open at Veterans Field at 3rd Street southeast in downtown Long Beach. Saturdays events include a costume contest for kids from birth to 15 years old and up. There will be a pumpkin pie eating contest at 2 p.m. Then on Sunday, come participate in the pet costume contest, which starts at 1 p.m., and at 2 p.m., enjoy the pumpkin carving contest.
