- An object later confirmed to be a pipe bomb was discovered at the Port of Ilwaco Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19, and disposed of in a controlled detonation by specialists from the Washington State Patrol.
The Port of Ilwaco was the center of a large police presence Sunday afternoon after a potential explosive was discovered. Officers shutdown the area around 3 p.m. while they assessed the situation.
Multiple agencies including the Long Beach Police Department, Pacific County Sheriff’s Office, Ilwaco Volunteer Fire Department and Pacific County Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene.
According to radio traffic, the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad was also asked to investigate and properly dispose of the item. The squad detonated the device around 6:40 p.m.
“We believe it was a viable device,” LBPD Chief Flint Wright said. “It appeared that someone may have tried to light it.”
The device appeared to be a home-made explosive made to look like a stick of dynamite.
This incident is still under investigation and no further details were available at the time of reporting.
