Christmas reading

Holiday Desserts

Food drive raffle

SEAVIEW Artistic Bouquets is raffling a five-foot stuffed moose. Bring in a non-perishable item for the Ilwaco Food Bank and get a drawing ticket and a chance to win Mr. Moose. The drawing will be Dec. 21.

Handmade holidays

NASELLE Naselle Timberland Library is hosting Handmade Holidays, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 11 for children. Warm up with hot cocoa. Violet planting

ILWACO Ocean Park elementary students are working with Willapa National Wildlife Refuge and members of the community to plant early blue violets, learn about regional native prairie restoration efforts, and whack weeds during a volunteer event set for Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. Attendees are to dress in layers and be prepared for a variety of weather. Bring water. Gloves and hand tools will be provided. Toonerville campground options

NASELLE The Department of Natural Resourses has issued an invitation for public comment concerning moving the Toonerville campground in Naselle. This is a chance for public input about future recreation management options. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Commons Room at the Naselle High School. Please attend to show support for keeping this campground open for all. This is a multi-use campground located near Naselle and has provided peaceful camping for many. ILWACO  The St. Vincent de Paul Ilwaco Food Bank will be open Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring containers.

Yes, Virginia

ILWACO Peninsula Players is presenting a radio play running until Dec. 15 on weekends, entitled Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus by Andrew J. Fenady. The play will be on the River City Playhouse stage where the cast will mimic a 40s radio show. Besides the dialogue there will be live sound effects comparable to those used in during this time period. The cast includes Frank Logan, John Adams, Laurie Carter, Janis Hoover, Rose Wallace, Art Herring, Rob Lindberg, Penny Bierly and Ed Ahlers, with sound effects by Bill Nickila. The show is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday night with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. All performances will allow free admittance to children 12 years old and under accompanied by a paying adult. The cost is $10 for adults.

Toys for Tots Drive 

   PENINSULA  Jennifer Vedenoja of Pacific County Fire District No. 1, is collecting toys and gifts to be distributed locally to kids who may not otherwise have a Christmas gift to open this year. Businesses, organizations and community members are welcome to help in the effort by donating new, unwrapped toys at selected drop off sites. Toys for Tots donation drop boxes for new, unwrapped toys are at: All Seasons Kidstuff in Chinook; Bank of Pacific in Ilwaco; the Chinook Observer office, the Bank of Pacific, Dennis Company, KeyBank, and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Long Beach; Peninsula Senior Center in Klipsan; and Bank of Pacific and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Ocean Park. Once Toys for Tots coordinators collect the donations, specific local agencies such as Head Start, the Elks and Eagles lodges, and PCFD No. 1 help them to distribute the gifts to select lists of needy kids ages one through 16. Help is especially needed to find gifts for the older kids around 12 to 16 years old. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity; all toy and monetary donations are tax deductible. Holiday extravaganza

NASELLE Appelo Archives Center at 1056 SR-4 in Naselle is holding a holiday bazaar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 14. Everyone is welcome to come do a bit of holiday shopping with gifts from local vendors. Table spots are available for $5 each. Call 484-7103 for information. Childrens Christmas party

OCEAN PARK A Peninsula Childrens Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Peninsula Moose Lodge. MOAA meeting

ASTORIA The Christmas meeting of the Lower Columbia River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will be held at the Astoria Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Dec. 14. The social will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Active duty, retired and reserve commissioned and warrant officers of the seven uniformed services and their spouses are eligible to attend. Marionettes puppet play

RAYMOND  Raymond Timberland Library presents Mary Shaver Marionettes: The Shoemaker and the Elf, from 11 a.m. to noon, Dec. 14 for all ages. The Shaver Marionettes will perform a winter holiday puppet play. Who could possibly be making shoes for the elderly shoemaker? Watch the shoemaker puzzle his way through the mystery of beautifully finished shoes. Families helping families

ILWACO Starting Dec. 14, from noon to 3 p.m., Families helping Families will be a community outreach project at Pacific Bible Church. Families will be able to come to the church and receive clothing (for kids and adults), personal hygiene items, toiletries, laundry soap, blankets and more. Donations and volunteers are welcome. Pacific Bible Church is located at 501 1st Avenue North (above Black Lake) in Ilwaco.

Master carver demo

OCEAN PARK On Dec. 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Bay Avenue Gallery at 1406 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park, will host Athol Libby, a master carver, as he demonstrates his woodcarving techniques. Athol will show how he uses knives and chisels to create unique artworks. Come meet this talented artist and watch him create unique hand carved Santas and angels. VeggieTales

ILWACO VeggieTales Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas will be offered at Pacific Bible Church at 501 North Highway 101 in Ilwaco (on the hill above Black Lake) beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14. B&B open house

PENINSULA Boreas Inn, The Shelburne and Charles Nelson Guest House are hosting the 20th Annual B&B Holiday Open House on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The three local B&Bs will be open for holiday touring with home-baked treats and a warm fire to get you in the holiday mood! Boreas Inn is having their guests, friends and family decorate their B&B to be festive for the holiday open house. The annual event is a benefit for the Peninsulas local food banks, so non-perishable food items are the price of admission to each B&Bs open house. Just bring non-perishable food items for donation to each inn you visit so we can help feed our community. Tuba Christmas Concert

ILWACO  Everyone is invited to attend the free Tuba Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. This family-fun event, sponsored by the Water Music Festival Society, features the Astoria Tuba Quartet performing toe-tapping music plus a few refreshments and lots of good fellowship. Bayside Singers Winter Concert

OCEAN PARK  The Bayside Singers will perform a concert of Christmas holiday music and more at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15, at Ocean Park Lutheran Church on U Street. The choir is directed by Barbara Poulshock and accompanied by Barbara Bate. Donations to defray expenses for music, musicians and venue as well as for the food bank are most welcome. Christmas concert

RAYMOND Willapa Harbor Chorale will lift their voices in celebration of the Christmas season during their 42nd annual Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. at the historic Raymond Theater. Thirty singers will perform a variety of holiday music. The choir is directed by Rick Gauger with Beth Ginther as accompanist Additional support is given by flutist Connie Bevington and Lew Chapman on trumpet. Christmas trees for sale

ILWACO Every weekend continuing to Dec. 22, the Ilwaco Music Departments tree lot, located at the maintenance yard off School Road in Ilwaco, will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fresh cut Noble firs grown in Raymond are priced as follows: four- to five-foot tree $30; five- to six-foot tree $40 or six- to seven-foot tree $50. This is a fundraiser for the band and choir trip to Orlando, Fla. Set for this spring. Please contact Rachel Lake at the high school for more details at 642-3731.

Shoeboxes of Joy

PENINSULA The Shoeboxes of Joy donation station in the Long Beach Depot at 102 3rd Street NW (next to Dennis Company) will be open until Dec. 22 with hours Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday hours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Shoeboxes of Joy is a program for low income elderly or disabled who may not have family close by. A bar of soap, a bottle of hand lotion, a can of soup, a crossword puzzle book, and a package of cookies are just some of the types of items that would be perfect. A full box with a good variety of items makes the best gift. Shoeboxes and/or individual items are needed by Dec. 22. Beginning Watercolor

ILWACO Grays Harbor College is offering beginning watercolor at the Columbia Education Center located on 208 Advent Avenue SE in Ilwaco. The class will be held on Wednesdays for 10 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. starting Wednesday, Jan. 22. Judy Leonard, a local successful watercolor artist, will be teaching the class. The class is designed for the beginner and will teach watercolor and basic drawing skills simultaneously to build confidence in your abilities. Anyone who has ever wanted to create beautiful watercolors is urged to enroll. Master gardener classes

ILWACO Do you enjoy gardening and sharing gardening information? If you do enjoy learning, gardening and sharing researched based information with others, turn in your application to become a WSU Master Gardener. Training starts in January and will be held on Saturdays, every other week, through June. Taking Charge Of Your Computer

PACIFIC COUNTY  Grays Harbor College Continuing Education is presenting an eight-week course entitled, Taking Charge of Your Computer at both the Ilwaco and Raymond Education Centers. The class will start Tuesday, Jan. 28 at both locations from 1 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. The course will be taught by Jim Unwin, a long-time instructor for the college. Students will learn how to make their computer look and work the way theyd like it to while maximizing its capacity, protecting it from viruses, and other forms of malware. Gingerbread kids

OCEAN PARK Come see the Gingerbread Kids who are visiting Ocean Park Elementary on Dec. 18. The music program starts at 9 a.m., and then there will be gingerbread house building in the kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Come share some Christmas cheer with these gingerbread kids and see how wonderfully well they do in their music program.
