GIS Day in Ocean Park
OCEAN PARK On Nov. 20 at the Ocean Park Fire Station, Mark Scott, M.S. GISP, will offer an interactive demonstration of powerful GIS mapping tools using technology like youve never seen. The interactive map of Pacific County contains a robust catalog of federal, state and local government GIS information including taxlot records and zoning with the Comprehensive Plan; Shoreline Management Plan Data; FEMA flood zones 1979-2013; the historic 1880 Shoreline; political boundaries; Stamen watercolor maps never before seen in Pacific County as well as lots of additional data. ILWACO Ilwacos Parks & Recreation Commission invites the public to the last parks plan open house set for Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Ilwaco Community Building at 158 1st Avenue. Ilwaco is undertaking its first parks, trails and natural area planning effort. With the completion of the plan by March 2014, the city will be eligible for state grant funding for parks, trails and natural areas. Through the first open house, a community questionnaire and stakeholder interviews, great information ideas have been gathered. Now it is time to narrow them down to final recommendations. Final open house attendees will look at all the potential projects and help determine the projects to pursue. Be part of the selection process by coming out for this important meeting!
Diabetes support
ILWACO The Diabetes Support Group meeting is from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Ilwaco Community Building (next to the library). ILWACO From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 the American Legion Auxiliary will present a Holiday Bazaar, Bake Sale and Lunch at the Columbia Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco. This delicious holiday event is open to the public and features mainly local vendors. Mark your calendars for festive fun, food and crafts. Proceeds will support the Warrior Transition Battalion for wounded warriors at Joint Base Lewis McCord. Turkey shoot
RAYMOND The Pacific County 4-H Shooting Sports club will hold a Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Willapa Harbor Gun Club located at 37 Butte Creek Road in Raymond. For $5 you get 10 shots with an air rifle at a turkey target and the top shooter in each of the five age division categories will win an oven ready turkey. This event is open to youth and adults, no matter your skill level. Homemade turkey noodle soup and turkey sandwiches, along with pie and coffee will be available for purchase and eat there or to take with you. If you have any questions, please call Jeannie at the 4-H office at 875-9331. All proceeds go to support the local 4-H shooting sports club so please come out and support your local 4-H and try to win a turkey!

OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Lutheran Church will hold its annual holiday bake sale and bazaar to benefit Camp Victory, on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 2400 U Street. There will be baked goods and home crafts on sale. Grannies Attic will include gift items and desirable second-hand gift items. Raffle tickets are on sale now for a queen-sized quilt made to support the Lutheran World Relief. Coffee and cinnamon rolls will be available for purchase.

Wildlife friends meeting
LONG BEACH Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge will hold their annual meeting Saturday, Nov. 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Long Beach Depot, 102 3rd St. NW. The public is invited to attend and enjoy a performance by the Shoalwater Storytellers and to help select the winners of the second annual Fall Foto Contest. There will also be a raffle for a guided kayak trip, and refreshments. The Friends group is made up of people who support the Willapa Wildlife Refuge in its mission to protect refuge wildlife and its environment. Some of the activities they offer in partnership with Refuge staff include: trail work, fourth grade environmental education, birding and salmon monitoring. Book signing
CATHLAMET Irene Martin, local author, will be signing her new book, The Family That Never Threw Anything Away, at the holiday gift fair to be held at St James Family Center at 1135 Columbia Street in Cathlamet on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The slim volume of poems, like everything else for sale at this event, would make an excellent gift. Many items at the fair are locally hand-made and one-of-a-kind. Gifts include jewelry, paintings, jams, dream catchers, wreaths, Christmas decorations as well as unique teddy bears by artist Pat Talbot. Another feature is C&H locally smoked salmon. Homemade lunch selections and a large bake sale featuring Scandinavian goodies will also be on hand. Fred Carter will provide live entertainment. All proceeds benefit St. James Family Center.
Tsuga Gallery Holiday Open House
CATHLAMET Saturday, Nov. 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Tsuga Gallery located at 70 Main Street in Cathlamet, will be celebrating with a Holiday Open House. Following the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Courthouse, drop by and enjoy the lively music of Kathleen Petersen on the keyboard. There will be lots of specialty finger foods and refreshments. The Gallery has been decorated for Christmas and has taken on a very festive air. The exhibits have been re-done with new work. Come and meet the artists and see the wonderful array of talent in our beautiful little area. Songs from Treasured Musicals
ILWACO More than a dozen gifted local singers come together at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, at the River City Playhouse on Lake Street in Ilwaco (next to the Heritage Museum and opposite the Ilwaco Post Office) for an hour of songs from well-known musicals. Many of the Broadway shows included in this review have been performed in the area during the past decade. They include Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Sound of Music, The Fantasticks, and The Wizard of Oz. Singers for this special performance to benefit the Peninsula Players range from 6-year-old Josie Schenk to 97-year-old senior crooner Pete Hanner. Director and accompanist for the event is Barbara Bate of Ocean Park, accompanist for the Bayside Singers as well as for many community musicals. For more information, phone 665-4421. PENINSULA Gobble up art during the 6th PAA Studio Tour on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Held peninsula-wide, follow the white, black and red PAA Art Event signs to experience the home studios, working hands and creative hearts of 21 local artists. The event is free, the experience priceless. Maps are available at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce, from the Nov. 27 edition of the Chinook Observer, or on the Peninsula Arts Associations Facebook page and website www.beachartist.org. Lets go clamming!
PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Nov. 30 through Dec. 3, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Artist Guild Bazaar
LONG BEACH The Northwest Artist Guild will have their bazaar on Dec. 7 between noon and 5 p.m. at Gallery 504 North in the Peninsula Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. This bazaar will not only have original paintings by Guild artists Jean Nitzel, Dian Schroeder, Kent Toepfer, Betsy Toepfer, Susan McCloud, Connie Criess, Wes Moehnke, Sharon Strong, Maxine Brown, Judy Leonard, Joan Taplin and Martha Lee, but also cards, some unframed original paintings, and prints and more by some of these artists. These are in time and suitable for gift giving for any occasion! There will also be a 2014 calendar available for sale with a picture of a painting from each one of the original guild artists.
