Legion safety awards

ILWACO  American Legion Don R. Grable Post #48 will hold its 26th Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards ceremony and banquet on Wednesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Eight people will be honored, and community members are welcome to attend. All food will be provided. The featured speaker will be Jim Davidson, state commander of the American Legion. Resource night

KLIPSAN On Thursday, Oct. 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., seniors are invited to the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan for a resource night. Those with an interest are welcome to come and learn more about our economic times, todays interest rate environment, and loan options for senior citizens. Refreshments will be served. Open to the public.

Chronic conditions workshop

OCEAN PARK Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging continues the free public workshop called Living Well with Chronic Conditions. On Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 21, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Family Worship Center, at 26310 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park, two specifically trained leaders will facilitate the workshop. Using material developed by Stanford Universitys Chronic Disease-Self Management Program, this workshop is designed to help anyone who suffers from a chronic condition. The goal of the program is to help individuals live a healthy life even with chronic conditions by managing symptoms. Those who are caring for someone with a chronic condition are also encouraged to attend. Each participant will have access to a Living Well With Chronic Conditions book. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Imaginary Invalid

ILWACO Peninsula Players is presenting the classic, The Imaginary Invalid at the River City Playhouse at 127 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. Shows are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27. Charles Fitzpatrick exhibit

ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco is hosting an exhibition of photographs and drawings by Charles Fitzpatrick (1884-1971) chronicling over 40 years of visual history on the Long Beach Peninsula. The exhibition will be on view in the museums special exhibition galleries through Jan. 5. Fitzpatricks postcards, photographs and drawings represent the working artist who found inspiration in local subjects. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m., with free admission on Thursdays. Christmas bazaar

KLIPSAN Peninsula Senior Activity Center is holding a Christmas bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26 at the center located at the corner of Pacific Highway and 217th Lane. In addition there will be a bake sale and a raffle. Prizes include a framed print by Eric Wiegardt and many other valuable prizes. Lunch will be served both days. Call 665-3999 for information.

Plant Clinic and Landscape Workshop

ILWACO  Master Gardeners of Pacific County will lead a Winterizing your Garden and Landscape workshop at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In addition attendees will be planting native plants in the garden after the workshop. Bring a pair of durable garden gloves. Dress for the weather and bring a snack if you wish. If you have plant questions or problems ask a master gardener. The group is also sponsoring a plant clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the museum. If possible, please bring samples of your plant problem. Pumpkins and more

LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon to 5 p.m., the Pumpkin Patch and Myers Cemetery will be open at Veterans Field at 3rd Street southeast in downtown Long Beach. Saturdays events include a costume contest for kids from birth to 15 years old and up. There will be a pumpkin pie eating contest at 2 p.m. Then on Sunday, come participate in the pet costume contest, which starts at 1 p.m., and at 2 p.m., enjoy the pumpkin carving contest. Carnival

ILWACO From 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26, kids of all ages are invited to a carnival in the Black Lake school gym sponsored by the Ilwaco Middle School. There will be food and games and something for everyone. Tickets are 25 cents each however some activities require more than one ticket. Dont miss the fun!

Unwanted Prescription Drugs

SEAVIEW  On Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WellSpring Community Network, Long Beach Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to Sids Market at 4401 Pacific Way in Seaview. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Swift exhibit

SKAMOKWA Redmen Halls final exhibit of 2013 will be paintings of the well-known artist Mike Swift. He is a prolific storyboard artist for the film industry working with films like View From the Top, Red Line, Stuart Little, Taxi and many others including advertising work for Nike, Microsoft and Intel. He also paints some amazing portraits of people, cars, planes, boats and landscapes. He has a fine sense of texture and colors that is reflected in these portraits we will be exhibiting at Redmen Hall. This outstanding exhibit will be opening on Saturday, Oct. 26, and will run through Thanksgiving weekend with selected paintings showing in the Holiday Open House through Dec. 22. There will be a reception for Mike on the Oct. 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with food, coffee and hot apple cider. Redmen Hall is located at 1394 S.R.4 in Skamokawa and is open Thursday through Sunday.

SmileMobile

ILWACO The SmileMobile, a fully-equipped mobile dental clinic, is coming to the Ilwaco Middle-High School from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1. Appointments must be scheduled by Oct. 28. The SmileMobile provides dental care to children from birth through high school with limited family income. They accept Medicaid cards and a sliding fee scaled based on family income. Photo contest

ILWACO  Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuges photo contest is open until Nov. 2. Photos should represent the wildlife and flora native to the refuge or scenic views within the Willapa Refuge areas. First prize is $50, second prize is $30 and third Prize is $20. All three winners receive a free one-year membership to the Friends group with recognition and photos to appear on the Friends Facebook and website. This contest is open to all photographers. Free youth TaeKwon-Do

LONG BEACH Free Youth TaeKwon-Do classes are offered at the Long Beach Elks starting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. There is also the usual adult class at 5:30 p.m., which costs $5. The Youth Class will be free of charge for the foreseeable future. A Korean unarmed martial art, Taekwon-Do increases strength, stamina, flexibility and confidence. Halloween Carnival

Trick or treat

KL.IPSAN Trick or treat at Golden Sands Assisted Living in Klipsan from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. This is a safe, fun and warm way to trick or treat. Spread cheer and help with their food drive by bringing a non-perishable food donation.

Essay contest

PENINSULA  The Long Beach Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3721 is proud to announce this years essay and scholarship programs. The program consists of two competitions, Voice of Democracy for students in ninth through 12th grades, and the Patriots Pen competition for students in sixth through eighth grades. The competitions are open to all students enrolled in public, private or home schooling. Entrants in the Voice of Democracy competition are required to prepare and record a three to five minute essay using the theme, Why Im Optimistic About our Nations Future. Patriots Pen entrants are required to write a 300 to 400 word essay on What Patriotism Means to Me. All entries for both competitions must be submitted by Nov. 1. Harvest Haul

Evangelists to speak

Harlem Ambassadors perform

Wizard of Oz

CHINOOK One of Americas greatest and most loved stories of all times is returning to the PAPA Theater at Fort Columbia in Chinook. Due to popular demand, the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists will perform The Wizard of Oz for a two-weekend engagement in November. No need to travel on the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to find the Wizard to grant your wish for show tickets.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.papatheater.org and at Okies Thriftway or in Long Beach at Sweet Celebrations. Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $5 for children 15 years and younger. The production will run the weekends of Nov. 8, 9, 10 and 15, 16, 17. Show times are Friday evenings at 7 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. The Wizard of Oz has something for everyone of all ages, so come join the fun of celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz. Bazaar & Bake Sale

NASELLE On Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale will be held at the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Knappton Road in Naselle. The event will include fall and Christmas decor, a wide variety of gift items and baked goods.  John Indermarks latest book, Advent, A to Z will also be available for purchase. Tillicum Foundation Meeting

ASTORIA The Tillicum Foundation will hold its 2013 annual membership meeting on Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Fellowship Hall of Grace Episcopal Church at 1545 Franklin Street in Astoria. A complimentary breakfast for Coast Community Radio members will begin at 9 a.m. and the meeting will start at 10 a.m. The meetings agenda includes the election of five directors to serve on the Foundation board and reports on KMUN, KTCB and KCPB by Board President David Hall, and General Manager Joanne Rideout. Presentations will be made to recognize the Coast Community Radios Programmer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Rookie of the Year and the Board of Directors Award.
