Japan Emergency Manager to speak

ASTORIA On Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Junichi Matsuo from the Japan Fire Headquarters Prevention Division in Sanda City will speak about his experiences as an emergency manager responding to the subduction zone earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. The event will be held at the Judge Guy Boyington Building, 857 Commercial St., Astoria. Matsuo, who is being hosted by OSU Extension Service County Leader Patrick Corcoran with support from Clatsop County Emergency Management, is passionate about talking to local emergency managers and sharing his lessons learned. He will speak briefly and offer opportunities for audience questions.

Chinook Food Bank

CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook. The food bank will be open on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Tammy at 244-2448 for additional information.

Free youth TaeKwon-Do

LONG BEACH Free Youth TaeKwon-Do classes are offered at the Long Beach Elks starting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. There is also the usual adult class at 5:30 p.m., which costs $5. The Youth Class will be free of charge for the foreseeable future. A Korean unarmed martial art, Taekwon-Do increases strength, stamina, flexibility and confidence. Bunco for Food4Kids

LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Photography & carving exhibit

SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall in Skamokawa is hosting an exhibit by Mike Cullom, a well-known photographer and carver. He recently returned from an extensive trip to Europe with photographs of people and places encountered on that trip, and will also show his beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. He has titled his exhibit So Much to See. This is an unusually beautiful exhibit of understanding what the world of sight can show us. The exhibit runs until Oct. 20, with carving demonstrations most Saturdays. Redmen Hall is open from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday at 1394 SR-4.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Relay for Life

ILWACO The 2013 Relay for Life event is set to begin Saturday, Sept. 21 at noon and run until 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Ilwaco High School football field at 404 School Road. The theme for this years event is Carnival for a Cure. Carnival hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Come and enjoy some carnival games, a bingo tent, jumping and jousting, face painting, tattoos, arcade, a silent auction and live music by local favorites Steve Delzell from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and North Coast Blues from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be some themed lap contests, country dancing at 2 p.m. and much more. When the sun goes down at 8 p.m. hundreds of luminaria will light the way under the stars to remember those lost to cancer, those fighting cancer and those who have fought cancer and won. Each team will have someone on the track all night! Elks Sprints for K-9 Unit

LONG BEACH The president and members of the Long Beach Elks Lodge #1937 are participating in the Cape Disappointment Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 21. Out of the Box Art Show

TOKELAND Sept. 21 is the date of the eighth annual Out of the Box Art Show and Wine Tasting, to be held at the Tradewinds on the Bay conference center in Tokeland. Proceeds from this popular event go to the Ocosta School art program. The art show begins around 2 p.m., with the wine tasting starting at 4 p.m. Local artists will be on hand to offer their unique items. Admission to the art show is free; or $12 at the door gives you a unique wine glass with the Out of the Box logo on one side and a picture drawn by Alyssa Phillips, an Ocosta art student, on the other. Coupons for three tastes and a full glass of wine are also included. Select from five different categories of wine. The event culminates with a live auction of donated items from our participating artists.

AAUW meeting

OCEAN PARK  The Willapa Chapter of the American Association of University Women will hold its regular meeting Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Ocean Park Library. Charlotte Kelly and the young women who attended the Tech Trek sponsored by AAUW will be at the meeting to speak about their experiences. The public is invited. AAUW will participate in the Cranberrian Fair and the Spring Tea to provide scholarships for our local young women.

Grange hosts Workshop Series

LONG BEACH The Long Beach Grange is beginning a series of self-sufficiency workshops called Back to Basics. The first of these classes will be basic mending and altering. Attendees will learn simple hand-sewing techniques to maintain and extend your wardrobe (i.e. sewing buttons, hems, patches, simple alterations). The class will be taught by Lisa Mattfield and will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Grange Hall, 5715 Sandridge Rd, Long Beach. Healthy Supper Club

LONG BEACH The Forks over Knives Vegetarian Supper Club will hold a meeting on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m., with the emphasis on healthy desserts! This event will be held at Stout Community Center at the Adventist Church, located at 2707 N Pacific Ave., in Long Beach. The guest medical professional will be Dr. John Clark, who was in practice for many years as an orthopedic surgeon. Ten years ago he left medicine and he and his family travel to promote and teach lifestyle medicine. He will be downlinked live to this meeting from Virginia via Skype. Burn Ban

PACIFIC COUNTY  A burn ban remains in effect for Pacific County and will remain in place through Sept. 30. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires in approved fire pits that are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not considered recreational and are not allowed under any circumstances. Photo contest

ILWACO  The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge second annual photo contest is beginning for 2013.Photos should represent the wildlife and flora native to the refuge or scenic views within the Willapa Refuge areas. First prize is $50, second prize is $30 and third Prize is $20. Enter through Nov. 2. All three winners receive a free one-year membership to the Friends group with recognition and photos to appear on the Friends Facebook and website. This contest is open to all photographers. Patsy Cline tribute

TOKELAND Elizabeth Stierle will perform a tribute to the legendary Patsy Cline beginning at 5 p.m., Sept. 26 in the Shoalwater Bay gym on Elm Street in Tokeland, across from the post office. Stierle has been compared to Cline with her soulful, similar style and heart. She enjoys immensely her time visiting with folks after the show so please join her for an up close meet and greet. Accompanying her on guitar, vocals, harmonica is her husband, Paul, who formerly managed and performed with the New Christy Minstrels. Free CERT Training

SURFSIDE  Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course at 31402 H Street, Ocean Park. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 20 participants. Dates of training are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 5. The CERT program is an all-risk, all-hazard training. This valuable course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your neighbors, and your neighborhood in an emergency situation. CERT members receive 20 hours of initial training provided free of charge. The course is taught with classroom instruction for the first two days and practical exercises during the last day. How to Make a Pot in 14 Easy Lessons, is the story about Joe, a potter who lives in the Skagit Valley area and has fallen in love with an English actress, Lucy. Celebrate Oktoberfest

RAYMOND  The Northwest Carriage Museum is inviting everyone to the fifth annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual event has become a Northwest tradition along the Willapa River. Harvest Fest

RAYMOND  Grays Harbor Colleges Riverview Education Center in Raymond will be hosting a Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be arts and crafts vendors, food, informational booths, entertainment and live music. In addition, there will be a variety of childrens activities and local gardeners are encouraged to bring their excess produce to sell or trade. There is no admission fee and parking is up close and plentiful. The festival will be held outside the Riverview Education Center at 600 Washington Avenue, Raymond. Columbia River Country Days

CATHLAMET Friends of Extension and Wahkiakum 4-H present the fifth annual Columbia River Country Days on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. Featured this year are events at the Two Island Farm Market on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. Activities planned there include a pie social to benefit 4-H, Punkin Chunkin sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and plenty of fresh local grown produce for participants to purchase. Also on Friday, the Tsuga Gallery will host an Artoberfest from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. New to the event schedule, members will feature artwork with an autumn theme and refreshments will be provided. Saturday includes a 4-H open house at the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds located in Skamokawa and the Lamplit Dinner on the Grays River Covered Bridge. Tickets are available for the Lamplit dinner for $35 or $25 for our Grand Americans (those 72 and older) and veterans at Bank of Pacific branches in Cathlamet and Naselle, at the Rosburg Store and the WSU Wahkiakum County Extension office at 25 River Street in Cathlamet. Afternoon with an artist

OCEAN PARK Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park will host an afternoon with artist William VanDorin, from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 6. VanDorin studied cabinetry, metal working, ceramics, masonry, textiles, life drawing, anatomy, watercolor, oils, electronics, computer theory and application and glass blowing. Food4 Kids Fundraiser

LONG BEACH On Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a bake and book sale to benefit the Food4Kids program. The bake and book sale will be held at the Chinook Observer office at 205 Bolstad Avenue E, Suite 2. Drop off your book/monetary donations during the week, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or mail to Food4Kids, c/o Chinook Observer, Attention: Marlene, P.O. Box 427, Long Beach, WA 98631. Each week volunteers in the Food4Kids program put together two breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and a pair of mid-morning and mid-afternoon nutritious snacks for the young people to eat on Saturday and Sunday. The food is placed in backpacks Thursday afternoons and the children take them home on Friday. The following Monday the backpacks are returned empty.

International Film Festival

ASTORIA The 2013 Astoria International Film Festival, a world-class film festival now in its seventh year takes place over the weekend of Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 in Astoria. The festival provides an amazing venue for film buffs to immerse themselves in a thoughtfully curated selection of 15 documentary and dramatic films by regional and international filmmakers. This event is held in a private screening-like setting at the beautifully restored Liberty Theater in historic downtown Astoria.
